List Rejected Ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 05/17/07

Besides having "Ideas in Action" a category for "Rejected Ideas" so people don't continue to try and add rejected ideas. And the posters of those ideas don't get bent out of shape for losing their idea from the site, they can still see it in the "Rejected Idea" bin, it can hopefully drive them to produce better ideas or push them over the edge (good or bad, hopefully good). I guess keeping the history of the IdeaStorm alive. Just lock the comments or the mocking might get out of hand.

No more junk software

Software submitted by samjabr 05/04/07

Please please please make your computers available without any software, except necessary drivers and apps that allow devices to function.

I can honestly say this is the one thing that keeps me from buying your computers. I already buy printers, monitors, accessories etc..

Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Advertise Graphics RAM correctly

Advertising and Marketing submitted by joffe100 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When we say we want to buy a 512Mb graphics card we really do want a 512Mb graphics card - not 512Mb with 256mb physical memory with 256mb shared! This is really BAD and misleading advertising - you do not see other RAM memory being sold 1Gb (512Mb physical, 512Mb shared!)

Should read: 512Mb physical memory and it actually be 512Mb physical memory

NOT: 512Mb** and then some tiny asterixed disclaimer on a linked page that points out that the 512Mb is some funky combination of 3Mb physical and the rest being pulled from virtual memory - this kills many graphic intense apps and games...

suprised no-one has sued over this? Not sure many buyers are even aware....

light up keyboards

Dell submitted by theonlyho 05/13/07

Maybe I'm not up to date, but since Apple has lighted up keyboards, it'd be awesome if laptops have lighted up keyboards also. It might be out on Dell now or not, lighted up keyboards are handy either way. 5 Comments »

Support higher speed memory

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Gaming submitted by shirk 05/19/07

Stop offering quad core CPU, SLI graphic cards, and terabyte hard drive systems that are limited to older low speed memory. Customers who purchase these higher end systems want their components to be up to date and cutting edge, so drop the ancient 533-667 mhz memory. Also stop crippling motherboards so that they wont support higher speed memory so customers are stuck without a choice. Give customers current memory, 800 mhz and up, for their brand new systems. 2 Comments »

Ship Linux (or Windows) Live-CDs for Data Recovery & Internet Access

Linux, Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by mistern 05/18/07

Imagine that your hard drive crashes. Or maybe a software problem renders your system unusable?

Wouldn't it be valuable if you had a simple-to-use Live-CD with basic functionality for Internet Access and Data Recovery?

I'd suggest a Linux Live-CD shipped with every Dell computer. A Windows Live-CD would probably be OK, too, but:
  1. There are many existing Linux Live systems which are just stable and ready to use.
  2. There might be licence problems with Windows.

Actually promote Desktop Linux

Advertising and Marketing, Desktops, Linux submitted by mrvertigo 05/10/07

Dell offered desktop Linux once but seemingly did not market it as much as it could have, the company did not make money on a Linux desktop and decided to stop offering it, this is one reason that dell needs to effectively market its newest offertings
as a desktop alternative!!!

Without a REAL attempt to market this it will die like attempts by so many others, Dell has the resources to market this!

Lets get desktop lnux out there guys! 4 Comments »

ubuntu on my computer: open source for education

Education, Linux submitted by raymako 03/23/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

I am a french teacher working in the south of France .The school's computers are Dell and Nec computers.
Like most of my colleagues, I am using "opensource" (free) softwares, and specially Ubuntu for 2 years.
It works perfectly and the pupils who tried Ubuntu like it very much. I hope it will be possible to buy a Dell computer without Windows very soon and I hope that all the Dell computers of my school will use Ubuntu.
Not only because Ubuntu is free (even if it's not insignificant in a french school...) , but because working with Ubuntu forces you to understand and to think how and why you are using your (Dell) computer.
I know that I'm speaking and writing english language like a spanish cow, so I'm sorry.
I just want to finish my message with this: please be the first big computer manufacturer offering Ubuntu or Windows (which is very performant, but not the only one and specially at school) .

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vistaâ„¢..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

Laptop cooling

Laptops submitted by kdickensheets 05/21/07

Why not have cooling for laptops draw air from the sides and exhaust through the back rather than the bottom. Travelers often put their laptop on their hotel beds or sit them on their laps on airplanes usually blocking the fan opening make the unit overheat. My wife often leaves hers running on the bed and it heats up because of lack of proper air circulaton. 13 Comments »

Work with gaming companies to promote Linux gaming

Gaming, Linux submitted by homerhomer 05/07/07

Dell is an huge step for Linux and they have a huge voice for the computer community . I would love to see Dell talking to gaming companies on bringing there products to Linux.

One way I could see this would be to bundle a game like Quake 4. 11 Comments »

Make longer lasting batteries for better portability

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by winoffice 05/05/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Don't make us recharge our laptops' batteries so often! A recent Cnet article (posted at Cnet's news site at about May 5, 2007) explains that Windows Vista's Aero Glass feature gives you less battery life. So, if we want Windows Vista, then we either have to recharge more often, or pay extra for more and better batteries! Instead, make Dell get rid of the batteries which quickly lose their charge...and come up with something that would give us longer battery life as follows (under Windows Vista), without making us stay away from Windows Vista or pay an extra $99 for another and better battery.

Basic laptops: at least 2 1/2 hours battery life
Entertainment laptops: at least 3 1/2 hours battery life
XPS laptops: at least 4 1/2 hours battery life 33 Comments »

Fix the BIOS to enable HIBERNATE & SUSPEND

Linux, Service and Support submitted by cement_head 05/03/07

Three major priorities should be addressed for the adoption of Ubuntu 7.04:

1) The Hibernate and Suspend functions should work with the BINARY (accelerated) graphics drivers from nVIDIA and ATI. nVIDIA has better linux support - consider switching to nVIDIA cards on laptops. HIBERNATE and SUSPEND are essential for laptops and for widescale adoption within the business/corporate world. DELL laptops have been notrorious for poorly written BIOSes that only will hook into Micro$oft windows and M$ ACPI scripts - while this has not been an issue in the past due to the monolith of M$; it is now an issue whose time has come. This BIOS (DSDT tables) issue has to addressed at the level of DELL, not Ubuntu. Consider the FreeBIOS project.

2) Wireless cards should "simply work". Major culprit is Broadcom Cards. They are a pain to install; and usually require an extra step. Consider adopting a different manufacturer that supplies & supports an open source WiFi driver.

3) AMD processors. They are better. They are cheaper. They use less power. The Turion (64 bit) is especially well suited to Linux. AMD & nVIDIA would be a formidable combination. Consider dumping INTEL.

Less important, but annoying:

4) iTUNEs. This is REALLY annoying. Goes to the heart of DRM. But, the pragmatic reality of today's world is that many people already have an iPOD. Maybe you (Michael Dell) has enough pull to get Steve Jobs to get his people to compile/script iTUNES for Ubuntu.

Looking forward to seeing Feisty on DELLs.

Fully Upgradeable Laptop

Laptops submitted by badblood 05/19/07

Produce a Laptop where everything can be upgraded. Asus is doing it - and here it is:

You name it: Processor, LCD, hard drive, memory, graphics card, optical drive -- take the old one out and put a new component it, all within minutes. The notebook is designed around the core principle of it being easy to upgrade.

Maybe you already have a flexible computer like this one? 9 Comments »

Advertise Ubuntu a little more loudly

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by zhinker 05/16/07 **NOT NOW**

I may be wrong about this but it doesn't seem to me like Dell's done any sort of advertising at all for the new Ubuntu pc's that it'll be rolling out soon, except for it's initial declaration I haven't heard a word about on any non-linux media (everyone using linux knows about it of course).

Unless Dell is planning on marketing this solely to linux users, it might want to let the rest of the world know that it's going to be selling Ubuntu soon (a simple photo and note on their website would be enough to make a bunch of pc buyers at least interested, and the ad wouldn't even cost anything). The problem with going after only current linux users is that you're substantially lowering your market base (which of course, is already pretty low--I realize this is just an experiment) to people who might already have pc's their perfectly happy with for the next couple of years, and I'm also worried that this perceived lack of interest might give Dell, and hence other pc manufacturers, the idea that selling linux computers is still a failing enterprise.

That's my 2 cents 28 Comments »

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.
