Backlit power button on Vostro notebooks

Vostro products submitted by itpro Jan 31

Make the power button on the Dell Vostro Laptops backlit.

Almost every other notebook on the market has a backlit power button - so you know when you've turned it on.

The power light is on the front - which should stay - but there should also be one integrated into the power button.

This is an "issue" with the 1400, 1500, and 1700.

It might also apply to the Inspiron, Latitude, and Precision models. Comment »

backlit keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by maltman 11/01/07

An affordable, mainstream backlit keyboard would be a very nice addition to Dell systems and available accessories. Ideally, this would be a wireless device (Bluetooth) with the option of recharging via USB. Additional models could incorporate special media keys or trackpads, but a basic, sub $40 backlit, wireless keyboard would be excellent. Half-height keys are great, while you're at it. 1 Comment »

Notebook Keyboard Light

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by cmrocha 03/05/07

I think it´s a good idea to have light under the keyboard, so it´s possibel to work with the notebook even when it´s dark, with no need of a additional source of light. 4 Comments »

Never allow backlit keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Healthcare submitted by pell Feb 1

Please, Dell, never produce or sell backlit keyboard or keyboard notebook light.

The thing is to work at night without strong enough ambient light can cause the strong injure to eyes health. Do not encourage your customers to become invalid and loose ability to work.

Health is more more important than fashion, and beauty, and requirements and requests of sometimes careless end-users.

Moreover backlit keyboards are often bought by parents for kids. How shall you live with knowing your business injure health of thousands of children?

Backlit Keys on Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by fwayne 04/20/07

Anyone who has used a laptop in dim or dark lighting knows that the keys are very difficult to see. Back-lighting the keys would be a huge improvement, and for those with vision imparements it could be a real useability feature. There are external keyboards on the market that have this feature and it would be great to have on a business or home class system.

One note: Please dont go for the translucent "light up the whole key" method. This is not very effective. The keys themselves should remain dark, witht the actual charactors being illuminated.

Also, a competitor has used a screen mounted LED to project light onto the keys, this isnt all that great either.

Do you agree? 5 Comments »

OS Choice

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by chi-7 Mar 1

For the last several months I have been in quest of “laptop” this is my first venture into laptop land and quite frankly, I find the total absence of OS choices appalling.

The only choices I have are XP or Vista, both of which are totally
unacceptable for my application, now this only leaves a third choice which is to pay for the OEM version of a bloated, insecure OS, enhance the bottom line and sales stats for an unresponsive, largely irresponsible soft ware publisher, allowing them to perpetuate the modern myth “there is only one real OS”.

This is also totally unacceptable.

Why not give the consumer the option of ordering a system minus OS or the ability to return backup disks, with the removed key sticker, if the product has not been activated or registered, mail a refund for the unwanted software.

This would certainly give you a real barometer on just what your clients want rather than forcing an unwanted product for them to blow off to data heaven and pay dearly for the “one size fits all” shrink wrapped mentality in an otherwise built to order world of laptops.

After doing some homework I really want a Dell laptop, but I refuse to support a publisher that conducts themselves in such a strong arm fashion as part of the deal. I don't like their product, don't want it, won't use it and will send it to data heaven on first power up.

Give me SuSe 10.3 or nothing!

I would rather give Novell $130.00 for a job well done than give 25 cents to MS. 8 Comments »

Higher quality lcd screens for XPS M1530

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by marcusesq Jan 13

My brothers XPS M1530 arrived today fitted with a WSXGA+ screen and its horrible and grainy. I didn't get a chance to see weather its fitted with the Samsung or LG screen.
I don't know weather this is a quality control issue or just penny pinching by using cheap screens but until its fixed there is no NO WAY I'll be placing an order.
How anyone could design a laptop this good only to ruin the whole deal by fitting nasty screens is beyond me.
It seems this is not an isolated case either.

To see the extent of the problem look

Info on Estimated Battery Life

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by jrg Feb 26

Dell should post information about the estimated battery life of their laptops. They used to do this in the magazine/catalog/add that they used to send out, but it has strangely disappeared. I find this info to be very useful and important when it comes to choosing between two laptops. Please give us this info! 6 Comments »

Nvidia 9600GT is out, Dell should offer it immediately on their Systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by lugo02 Feb 22

I think we should start seeing the new Nvidia 9600 GT offered on systems by sometime next week. Some of these cards retail for $179. So it's a great value/performance but since Dell has not began offering the new 512MB 8800GTS as yet we probably won't see the 9600GT offered by Dell for another couple months. It's a shame because by then Nvidia may have already released the higher versions.

Dell you have all weekend to do your testing, There is a good chance that Alienware will be offering it soon, so no reason why Dell can't do the same since they own Alienware

Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery.

Laptop Power submitted by sotopheavy Feb 21

My rule of thumb is if a battery goes down below an hour of laptop life it is useless . This usually happens within the first 8 months of owning a laptop for me.

If I'm using my laptop to surf the internet I will usually plug it in until it's full, then unplug it, then plug it in when it gets low, then unplug it again when it's full. This got so annoying that I eventually just left it plugged in and my battery now lasts 15 minutes with wifi off and the screen dimmed all the way down. There has to be a better way to manage laptop power than this. Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery. 5 Comments »

QUIT OFFERING THE OLD MOUSE AND KEYBOARD!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by junior Mar 11

Everybody knows about Dell's newest Keyboard and Optical Mouse. You should stop selling the old Optical USB Mouse and USB Keyboard...Come on, its 2008...The old keyboard and mouse are from 2005 and are old. Make the new Premium Optical USB Mouse standard and the Bluetooth version an option for Desktops and Notebooks around the world and WWW of Dell. Also, make the Enhanced Multimedia USB Keyboard standard. And the Bluetooth version an option. everyone here is a multimedia user and don't wan't the older USB Keyboard which has no media functions on it. So, let me recap.

Standard:
Premium Optical USB Mouse
Enhanced Multimedia USB Keyboard

Optional:
Bluetooth Mouse
Bluetooth Keyboard

Make sure to offer these on every Dell Website in the world like this, in the PC Customization store for every Dell Desktops and Notebooks. Whether its Inspiron or XPS desktops and notebooks.
Make sure that they are compatible with the machines.

Please make These Bluetooth or the new mice and keyboards compatible before Fall hits...that is when I get the XPS 630...which these accessroies are not compatible with yet...I know.I know..its new..but shouldn't take long for these accessories to be compatible. 16 Comments »

Make 64 bit Vista a standard OS option for all SMB laptops

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by stewie Mar 4

For some bizarre reason, the 64 bit Vista option for Small Business Laptops is not included in the standard OS options even though the machines are available w/ 4GB...

Even more strange.., the 64 bit option for small business does exist but it's hard to find and it's not possible to get in all configurations.

I'd like to see it available as apparently the OEM OS license is only for the specific version the unit comes with (32 bit or 64 bit) and cannot be upgraded. 5 Comments »

XPS M1330 with Gigabit Ethernet

Broadband and Mobility, XPS products, Laptops submitted by macavity 07/11/07

I think it would be really good for the M1330 to have Gigabit networking for various reasons.

- if you want to move or back up your music or some videos across your home network you actually need that speed

- most other similar laptops have it. I thought it's standard now and hardwired into every board?

- gigabit home routers are on the market

- I don't want to buy a product and be behind the market right from day-1.

I bought an Inspiron 4 years ago with only 10Mbps 802.11b wifi and regretted it already 6 months into the purchase. 9 Comments »

IMPLEMENT the INTEL PENRYN 45nm Processor on Dell's Notebook and Desktop it require less power more performance NOW!!! Dell is behind from HP

Desktops and Laptops submitted by bryan14c Jan 9

Dell should start to sell notebook with Penryn processor because it require less power more performance
T9500 6MB L2 2.60 GHz 800 MHz
T9300 6MB L2 2.50 GHz 800 MHz
T8300 3MB L2 2.40 GHz 800 MHz
T8100 3MB L2 2.10 GHz 800 MHz
specially on the XPS line etc... , well i hope DELL would not overcharge the consumers , dell can you sell this to us right now!!! for now it seems dell is falling behind again , well they have catchup with their design but somehow they fall behind with the power inside the laptop especially the penryn processors , dell hear us now implement the PENRYN processor , your behind from HP now , if you have gone to hp website and choose the dv9700t and dv6700t model you will see that HP is getting started about the Intel Penryn T9300 6MB L2 2.50 GHz as an option, , i dont know why DELL is Behind they should implement this now!!!

Make Dell Media Direct Optional

Sales Strategies, Software, Laptops submitted by stevelenihan Feb 28

This should be optional as most people don't want this software and it means your laptop comes with a separate partition on the hard drive for Media Direct that is very awkward to uninstall and just wastes space 3 Comments »

More Choice of Graphic cards on (Home & Home Office) Laptops and Desktops.

Desktops, Gaming, Inspiron products submitted by fahdriyami Feb 3

Sometimes when looking for a reasonablly priced notebook or desktop i would go for the Inspiron range, and im a gamer, when customizing my pc i just wonder why is there only one or two choices of graphic cards?!, most of them support the same bus type, so why not offer them?! eg, the best Inspiron notebook you offer only comes with a GeForce 8600M GT, can you just offer an 8700M with it at least? i know you did it for a reason and its probably a good one but im just curious...thinking of it, an Inspiron with an 8800M sounds ok :D 12 Comments »
