Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Fewer Desktop Enclosures to help Dell's bottom line

Desktops submitted by getgreg 04/04/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ok, I'm not an "industry analyst" and I obviously don't have access all the data that Dell does, but from what I read it seems that across the board desktop sales are slowing and laptops are becoming increasingly popular. This really comes as now surprise to me, everyone I know who ditched their desktop for a laptop has never looked back. Anyway, if this is the case why does Dell offer, by my count, 12 different desktop enclosures?

  1. Dimension 9200C/XPS 210 - Small Form Factor

  2. Dimension E520/Dimension E521 - Mini Tower

  3. Dimension C521 - Desktop

  4. XPS 410/Dimension 9200 - Mini Tower

  5. XPS 710 - Full Tower

  6. XPS 710 H2C - Full Tower

  7. Optiplex - Ultra Small Form Factor

  8. Optiplex - Small Form Factor

  9. Optiplex - Desktop

  10. Optiplex - Mini Tower

  11. Precision Workstation 690/490 - Full Tower

  12. Precision Workstation 390 - Full Tower

The really crazy thing is of those 12 enclosures there are really only 5 distinct sizes: Ultra Small Form Factor, Small Form Factor, Desktop, Mini Tower, and Full Tower.

Wouldn't now be a really good time to trim the number of enclosures down to 5 or even 4 enclosures? (The "small form factor" and "desktop" enclosures are almost the same size.) It seems to me that the cost savings of cutting the number of enclosures so drastically would be huge. Also, the enclosures used for the Optiplex line along with the XPS tower should accommodate every system you're currently selling.

Also, at the same time you could merge Dimensions into Optiplex and Precision Workstation into XPS. Lost of people have written here about killing the product segments and making all systems available to all customers, and this would be a way to do just that.

Lastly, I've seen a lot of interesting and crazy ideas here, but not a lot of ideas that I think would actually help Dell's bottom line and give customers a better product. I personally think offering fewer enclosures would do just that. It would cause Dell to have to design, manufacture, and stock fewer enclosures, make the process of buying a Dell a little less dizzying while giving home consumers a higher quality enclosure.

What do you think? Man I'd love for some Dell employee's to chime in here. Maybe I'm just way off...
And if I'm not, well I'd love an internship :)

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

Desktop Application to determine Service Tags and Specs

Desktops, Software submitted by jameshodge 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

We have around 1000 Dell computers at our company. It would be useful to be able to import a list of Service Tags into a Desktop application to view the MODEL/SPECS/ and maybe Warranty Information of the computers.

The Application could check 1 service tag at a time, or 100's.

Thanks

Offer "green" desktop systems

Environment submitted by tnitchov 05/18/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Offer "green" desktops by doing away with all Optiplex and Dimension case designs, revamp a laptop chassis into a smaller footprint desktop ... replace 3.5" drives with laptop 2.5" drives, and scale down 300+ watt power supplies to the Optiplex 65w capacities of yester-year.

Take an existing laptop design ... remove the LCD and keyboard to reduce the cost. Now you've got something more like the Mac Mini. You'll have something much smaller so that you can place under a desktop telephone ... you'll have something smaller so you won't be able to hear it ... and you'll have something more energy efficient that will help the environment.

No OEM Junk software, revival of recovery DVD/CD's NOT partitions

Desktops, Software submitted by mgin2k3 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

First, I hate it when I buy a computer and right when I turn it on out of the box, it's got a lot of junk software installed (AOL trial, Nortion Anti-Virus trial, etc). Get rid of these trial and non-trial OEM softwares or at least give the customer the option of not having them installed. I end up wasting so much time trying to uninstall all this junk anyways and I'm sure I'm not alone. I like having a clean install when I get a new computer (or when I'm recovering). And by clean I mean Windows (or whatever other OS the user may enjoy) and NOTHING else. Secondary OEM software can be included on a separate disc for the user to select manual installation (or request preinstallation of for new purchase orders).

Secondly, recovery partitions are terrible. Aside from the fact that they waste harddisc space, if the harddrive were to become toast or to be upgraded, not only would the user lose the original installation, but they would also lose the recovery data. Has this single point of failure not come to anyone's attention? CD's and DVD's can be preciously taken care and you never have to worry about losing both the installation and recovery partition all at once.

Blu-Ray drive on Dell M1330 laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products, Laptops submitted by burtontyler_23 08/02/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Are there any plans for a Blu-Ray drive in the M1330 laptop. It's the only reason i haven't bought one. And why is there an HDMI out with no high-def drive?

Allow orders to be canceled online (or streamline phone process)

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by neil_c 08/06/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

I've been very pleased with Dell's online ordering system - for initial ordering - but extremely disappointed with it's inability to change or cancel orders, even when those orders are weeks away from production. I just ordered an Inspiron 1520 laptop, and realized I should have ordered a 1420. When I attempted to cancel the 1520 order (only hours after it was placed, and still FOUR WEEKS before its ship-by-date) my only option was to call sales support. When the phone center finally opened (I'd ordered over the weekend), I had to wait on hold 5 different times for 5 different people (some in India, some elsewhere) and was repeatedly told that I needed to talk to someone else and that I would be transfered - and several times was just dumped back into the initial call menu. I was very carefully selecting the correct menus each time, and every time time (from the same menus) got a different excuse from the rep as to why they were unable to help. In the end I got someone in India (by selecting exactly the same phone-menu-options) and the order was canceled, but it took over an hour on the phone!

Why not allow recently placed orders (or orders for items that are clearly out-of-stock and weeks away from production) to be canceled online? Clearly phone support is Dell's biggest weakness at the moment. And solving this particular problem online would be such a simple issue - most other online ordering companies have provisions for canceling or changing orders..

I've owned dozens of Dell systems over the years, but it's a good thing I'd already ordered my Inspiron 1420 BEFORE I managed to cancel the 1520, because after this I would have really considered going with a Thinkpad. Maybe IBM/Lenovo's extra cost is worth it - even just for the customer service.

Allow Anti-Virus as Optional

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by rgb66rgb 09/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Some purchasers already have subscriptions to anti-virus products that can be ported to new systems. Not having a 'no anti-virus' option on every system order page forces those users to essentially buy two licenses when only one machine will be used.

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Offer Windows XP SP3 when it comes out - now is the time to make sure Microsoft will let you.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 10/09/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Sounds like WinXP Service Pack 3 will be coming out soon.

Dell: Please remember who your customer is.

It's time for you to start making sure Microsoft lets you ship WinXP-SP3 pre-installed on Dells.

I believe Microsoft's current thinking is that they won't let you and want you to force Vista on your customers instead.

Why might one want XP-SP3? Well - XP-SP2 leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to security (even according to Microsoft's Vista PR); and Vista leaves a lot to be desired in general. XP-SP3 might be the most viable windows OS for businesses.

Dell for Soldiers

Dell Community, Service and Support submitted by haler 11/12/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

My step-son is leaving for Iraq in January. His mom can't afford a laptop for him and neither can I, but I thought it could be done if everyone in the family could contribute via a site, then when there was enough, you could ship him a laptop!

This could be a great "community" PR thing for Dell -- Set up a website, soldiers could register -- somehow they are qualified, then anyone could go and give $5 to a few people. When the solider gets their laptop, they could receive a list of email addresses of the contributors if the contributors cared to share it -- then they could be pen pals too.

Preinstall Windows Defender on Windows XP Systems

Operating Systems, Software submitted by obyone89 11/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Just as you offer the freely available Adobe Reader to be preinstalled on systems, offer the freely available Windows Defender spyware protection software as an option to your customers in addition to the products from Symantec and McAfee that must be paid for. Windows Defender works quite well and is better than nothing as a form a malware protection. It's already part of Windows Vista so why not allow Windows XP customers to get it preinstalled.

Dell: You REALLY need to EXTEND your Staples and Best Buy offerings.

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by winoffice Jan 22

And yes, this post is a duplicate. A duplicate of my own post even. But I do think that Dell should offer more than one product line at Staples and at Best Buy. And without Vostros and without enough XPS systems, both at Staples and at Best Buy, it becomes difficult. (Actually it is not such a duplicate now, as I have modified the lists of PCs to be offered a little.)

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/best_buy?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?zipCode=4411...

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?&secondlevel...

Those links above can easily prove that your Staples and Best Buy offerings continue to be ridiculously limited. What I mean is that you are doing pretty well on your Inspiron offerings. But come on, only one XPS notebook (the M1330), still no XPS desktops (only an all-in-one, and even that is only at Best Buy), and still no Vostros?!

Just try to search for "xps" on the Staples and Best Buy Web sites, and you will probably see that the XPS offerings are pretty limited when compared to the Inspirons. Searching for "vostro" on either Web site produces similar results.

To say the least, I am surprised that you have such limited offerings at Staples and Best Buy. You REALLY need to offer MORE XPS systems at both shops. And you should start offering Vostros at both shops too.

Quite a few of us believe that you REALLY need to extend your Staples offerings (if you look here), and I think that you should do likewise with Best Buy.

XPS systems that you should offer at BOTH Staples and Best Buy (both in their in-person stores and on their Web sites):

- XPS M1330 notebook (already offered)
- XPS M1710 notebook
- XPS M1730 notebook
- XPS One all-in-one desktop (currently offered only at Best Buy, please sell at Staples too)
- XPS 420 mini tower desktop
- XPS 630 mini tower desktop
- XPS 720 tower desktop

Vostro systems that you should offer (again, both at Staples and at Best Buy, and again, both in their in-person stores and on their Web sites):

- Vostro 1400 notebook
- Vostro 1500 notebook
- Vostro 1700 notebook
- Vostro 200 slim tower desktop
- Vostro 200 mini tower desktop
- Vostro 400 mini tower desktop

Of course, I would appreciate it if you could sell more XPS and Vostro systems at Staples and Best Buy in-person stores and on their Web sites, in addition to the ones mentioned above. But please offer at least the systems mentioned above.

But on the Vostro and XPS systems that you offer at Staples and Best Buy in-person stores and on their Web sites, please no Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium (or Vista Business for that matter), that is what you already have on the Inspirons. The Vostro and XPS systems at Staples and Best Buy in-person stores and on their Web sites should come with Vista Ultimate.

And as I said earlier, yes this post is a duplicate. A duplicate of my own post even. But I do think that Dell should offer more than one product line at Staples and at Best Buy. And without Vostros and without enough XPS systems, both at Staples and at Best Buy, it becomes difficult.

(And sorry - the reason why I may seem to be so annoyed about this, is because ideas asking for Staples and Best Buy offering extensions have already been posted several times and Dell has just ignored them - that is, made no reply). 19 Comments »

Provide "Service Packs" for Dell updates

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell Web Site submitted by ueli Jan 23

If start over with a new installation of your device after a while, you need to download every single update from the dell website seperately. I would love to see an "update package" where only have to download one archive and install this.

And if you want to make it perfect, just provide a dialog at beginning of the installation asking what parts of the service pack you like to have installed. 1 Comment »

Make a new category for Ideas that used to be Under Review, but now aren't.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jan 23

On a different Idea, user badblood wrote 'this idea was 'under review' now it isn't and there is no trace that it ever was.....'.

It's really really great that you're apparently updating the old ideas to make sure that the statuses are correct. We see this because apparently the status "under review" is removed sometimes - presumably when an idea's apparently no longer being reviewed.

But rather than just removing the status when that happens, wouldn't it be better to put it in a new category - called "Reviewed" - when an item leaves the "under review" state, rather than just removing the status altogether.

Otherwise we're left to go to other mirrors of IdeaStorm to see the history of which Ideas were looked into by Dell. Comment »

Sell DELL Products on NEWEGG.com

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dimension products, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by thomasp94 Jan 24

I do all my companies IT shopping at 2 places, 90% at NEWEGG and the rest at DELL. Most of the products I buy at dell are monitors, toner, and other accessories. It would be really great if I could buy Dell products at Newegg. It would be more convenitent, it would save on tax and shipping as well. Newegg is also MUCH faster than Dell at shipping, I can usually get my order in 1-2 days after placing it, compared to a week or more from Dell. I'm not really talking about whole systems, more like...
-Monitors
-Speakers
-Accessories
-Printers
-INK & TONER
-Replacement Parts
-Keyboards & Mice 1 Comment »

Thinner Laptop Displays

Laptops submitted by tlax112 Jan 24

I will be brief and to the point. One can see on any of Apple's products that they have managed to make very thin screens that are both durable and high end. I believe that if Apple can do it so can Dell.
So, I propose that Dell makes all of their laptop screens thinner. It doesn't take a computer designer to realize that Dell includes way to much uneeded plastic on their screens that just adds to the size and bulk of laptops. I realize that some plastic border is needed for protection but really the amount Dell usually uses is absurd. 2 Comments »

DELL should not fall behind they must offer the latest

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bryan14c Jan 26

This is the lates news from notebookreview.com - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4220< Slips Intel's Penryn Processor into Consumer Laptops
Submitted by Andrew on Saturday, January 26, 2008

HP has quietly rolled out the latest Intel mobile processor family, code named Penryn, into their Pavilion dv2700t, Pavilion dv6700t and Pavilion dv9700t consumer targeted notebooks.

If you visit HPShopping.com now and go to the configuration screen you will get an option for selecting an Intel T9300 2.50GHz Core 2 Duo processor. The T9300 comes from the latest Core 2 Duo line of Penryn processors and offers a larger 6MB L2 cache and about a 10% performance boost over the equivalent Santa Rosa processor. HP is one of the first major vendors to offer Intel's Penryn in a mainstream non-gaming notebook, DELL is notably absent from having Penryn available in any of its laptops at the moment.

--.A proof that DELL is behind again they should first introduce new technology like this to maintain no. 1 computer maker on the US as well as the whole world , Dell should answer now!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------... you would agree with me DELL is falling behind again with its notebook parts and etc... for example the PENRYN processor , HP has begun implementing this as an option on their customize laptop just check their website to see the proof , well Dell had catch up about their design like the inspiron 1525 and the XPS 1330 and 1530 to be slim not the old bulky ones they had before, but why the technology inside is behind, DELL? well to conclude this i think if Dell had catch up with their design outside looks they should also catch up with the technology inside their laptops and desktops right , as the survey what i read dell is number 1 in the US right now well to maintain that they should offer the latest and best technology that they could offer to the consumer. and a 15 inch LED screen like the 1330 has.
