Below is the list of choices (with a proposed addition) in the "Narrow Your Selection" feature of Dell's US website for laptop / notebook computers. It's getting increasingly hard to find notebooks without glossy screens on Dell's website. Please add a choice for glossy/matte finish, as shown below.

Put Ubuntu on sale at the same time as Windows (unfair to Ubuntu sales count if we install it afterwords)

I'm pretty frustrated to receive a flyer with a Inspiron 1525 laptop on sale for $599 while the Ubuntu laptop with the same specs are $699.
Why is this frustrating you ask? Why don't you just buy the $599 laptop, wipe it and put Ubuntu on it you say?
Well, I can easily purchase the $599 laptop, wipe Windows off and put Ubuntu on but there are two problems with that:
1) I don't get Dell's support for Ubuntu Linux 2) Dell doesn't see what I do with my PC after I purchase it, thus, they don't know that they actually sold an Ubuntu laptop. This means that it is one more Windows laptop sold over a Ubuntu laptop. Why is this important?
Well, apparently a few weeks after supporting Ubuntu, Dell sold 40,000 Ubuntu-based laptops. It is finally my turn to purchase one, but I want to be added to that count so that Dell knows I'm buying an Ubuntu-based laptop. Why is this important?
I want Dell to continue selling Ubuntu-based laptops, so I think it would be in the Linux communities and Dell's best interest to offer the same deals on Ubuntu laptops as Windows laptops.
I don't want Windows Vista and I don't want you to think I want Windows Vista. I want Ubuntu, but I want to pay the same price as the other guys.

Train your tech support team about what featurs your BIOS's support.

Quoting a comment in under a different idea:
I just purchased an XPS M1530... The laptop came wih bios A07 installed. I installed [tried Oracle VM, but the BIOS didn't support the CPU's virtualization feature]. I upgraded to A08. ... I just want t encourage Dell to provide virtualization and mark it's availability clearly. Neither Dell support or the Best Buy Geek Squad could tell me anything about what the bios supported.
C'mon. Tech Support should be able to answer such questions. If a Dell customer who bought one of your XPS's can't answer questions like that, where do you expect them to turn? (my guess: Apple)

I am looking for the WUXGA (1920x1200) screens for the XPS M1530 laptops in India. But it is not availalbe in India. I see that it is available in USA and Europe Sites.
I already have an Inspiron 8200 bought in 2002 and that already had the UXGA screen (1600x1200), the highest available at that time. I want to go for a new laptop now but unfortunaly I dont want to downgrade myself to lower resolution screen laptop.
Kindly plan on providing the WUXGA display to the XPS m1530 in India too.

"Trade In" Program

I'd love to see a "Trade In" Program and/or initiative, where a customer who's been a long time customer could trade in an old system for a new one, or at least, a good sized discount.
I've got an old laptop and seriously need a new one. It's been out of warranty for a long time, but, would love to get a discount for a new one if I could trade it in.
This would also be environmentally healthy!

Customization options. Too limited.
Dell Web Site submitted by bbr
May 30
I just tried to select a XPS 630, and customize it.
But still and again the customization options are "too limited". If i don't want a monitor, then i don't want to have to select one. There is NO option to void the monitor currently on the XPS. That's just ridiculous.
Memory options are only 3GB or 4GB. What if i want 2GB or 8GB? Add the option please. I see no reason to limit it in any way. IF i wanted 1GB 2GB, 3GB, 4,5,6,7,8 or even 16 it should be an option because it "fits" in the desktop.
Mouse, and keyboard. I got one, and don't want another. Please add the option not to add a mouse/keyboard. Take 10-20 Euros off the price. It's good for the environment too.
Video card options are too limited as well. Crossfire / SLI, both should be available to choose from if we so wish. This means ATI as well as NVIDIA cards should be an option we can choose from.
Power supply. What is the default power supply in the XPS 630 / 730? 500W? 600W? I can't find the data, but would consider adding a "bigger" supply if i intended to upgrade my pc at a later time with a bigger video card or multiple drives.

Dell: Support Microsoft's latest move with regards to XP
Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by cosh

Here's a quote from a news article from the BBC web site: Customer demand has forced Microsoft to extend the shelf life of Windows XP by five months.
Microsoft was scheduled to stop selling the six-year-old operating system on 30 January 2008 to leave the field clear for Vista. Now the date on which many sellers of XP will no longer be able to offer it has been lengthened to June 30, 2008.
Microsoft said the change was to help those customers that needed more time to make the switch to Vista. Read the full article hereMy idea is simply that Dell support this move by continuing to offer preinstalled Windows XP to those customers who need it for as long as possible, now June 30, 2008. It would be good to get some pledge on this from Dell now, so that companies who still need to use XP know they can continue to rely on Dell for the foreseeable future. Dell Charges $49 to Remove Their Own Spyware
Dell, Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by thebittersea
05/07/07
I recently purchased a new Dell computer. Previously I made a promise with myself to never purchase a Windows based computer again, but due to work-related complications I had no choice. The Dell arrived three days after I ordered it, which was great considering the shipping was free.
Fearing that my computer would become infected with a virus within 12 minutes, my first line of order was to purchase and install anti-virus software. Once that was finished, my next task was to delete the unnecessary programs that come pre-installed on the machine. Having purchased a Dell before, I was well aware that Dell computers ship full of bloat. I anticipated to find garbage such as AOL coach, Dell Picture Studio and Internet Explorer. What I was shocked to find, however, was My Way Search Assistant.
For those of you recently in a coma (or those of you that use a Mac or Linux), My Way is a spyware program that claims to block pop-ups and provide other nice features for users on the web. In reality, My Way spies on your browsing habits and reports this information to a central server so that customized ads can be delivered to your machine.
I’ve been a fan of Michael Dell for about ten years since I read an article about him in Reader’s Digest. Not wanting to believe that my friend Michael would allow this garbage to be installed on computers that bare his name, I assumed that somehow a virus had snuck its way onto my machine in the ten minute window where my computer was without anti-virus software. Sadly, Google search after Google search revealed that in fact Dell is being paid to pre-install this filth on their machines.
I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. Michael Dell, how could you allow this to happen? It really hurts to see a former hero *sarcasm* falter like this. Now I know how fans of Tom Cruise must be feeling. :-) Michael, I thought I knew thee so well!
After spending an hour in shock and mourning, I gathered myself off the floor to remove the program from my machine. I opened the control panel and selected “Add or Remove Programs.” After removing My Way, I was told that I would have to reboot my computer. A quick reboot later and I was back in the control panel. At this point I was ready to forget the entire ordeal and move on with my life.
Looking back on it, I should have known there would be more problems. If only I had paid more attention to the screeching violins that could be heard in the background. That’s right, My Way still appeared in the “Add or Remove Programs” window. However, this time around there was no uninstall button. My Way appeared to be permanently on my machine.
Having read that Adaware can remove My Way, I downloaded, installed and ran Adaware from Lavasoft. Perhaps because My Way had already partially removed itself, Adaware was unable to detect My Way on the machine. It was time to call Dell support.
After a 30 minute wait on hold, a man with an Indian accent who asked to be called Stewart answered the phone. Our (abbreviated) conversation went something like this:
----------------------- Stewart: What seems to be the problem? Me: I’d like to remove My Way Search Assistant from my computer. I tried to remove it through the Control Panel, but it still appears in “Add or Remove Programs.” Stewart: What do you know about this program? Me: I know that this is Spyware and I know that I want it off my machine. Stewart: How did My Way get onto your computer in the first place? Me: What do you mean? It came pre-installed when I bought my computer from Dell. Stewart: I have trouble believing that this was on your computer when you purchased it. Me: So do I Stewart, so do I. -----------------------
Obviously Stewart is not very up to date with the sotware Dell pre-installs on their computers. If anybody doubts that Dell has a relationships with My Way, one only need visit http://www.dell4me.com/myway< then explained that he would no longer be able to assist me with my problem. He indicated that I would need to contact software support services for help removing the spyware that Dell installed on my machine. Oh yeah, and he indicated that they would charge my credit card for the call. $49, specifically.
What Dell is doing should be illegal. They are being paid to install spyware on new computers. They are making it difficult for customers to remove the spyware on their own. Then, they charge $49 to teach you how to remove it. This would be like a doctor being paid to infect you with a disease and then charging you for the antidote.
Dell claims that people like me are overreacting, but a lot of people seem to disagree.
If you feel comfortable messing with the Windows registry, here are some instructions on how to remove My Way. More information can also be found on the Dell forums.
I’m responsible for the purchase of eight Dell computers for myself, friends and family in the past few years. After this ordeal, I will never again purchase a Dell. I will never again recommend that anybody else purchase a Dell. In fact, from this point forward I will go out of my way to recommend that people looking to purchase a computer avoid Dell altogether. I doubt that I’m alone. With practices like these, Dell shouldn’t be surprised to hear its customers say, “Dude, you’re getting a boycott.”

Don't make us buy Vista
Operating Systems submitted by icantseeyou

From all of the press I have read it is plain that Vista is a big bomb. To buy the cheapest version I hear it isn't even as good as XP SP2. At the same time you need at least 4 Gig to run it. Offer other options... I don't care if it's Linux, XP, or a rat running on a wheel. Don't make us buy Vista. You can read more about this the OS options Dell offers here.

New Microsoft OS Reviews?
Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by transit60
04/20/07
"this new operating system is a system hog" "it takes too much RAM to run" "my programs crash on this system" "my hardware doesn't support it" "upgrading to this OS is a nightmare" "Microsoft released this OS too soon" "this OS is bloated" "I have to upgrade all of my hardware if I want to use this OS"
I have read all of these comments on various computer review articles...about six years ago, regarding Windows XP.
Now the same comments are cropping up again to describe Vista. These new articles are now using XP as an example of a "stable and reliable" OS.
To people really forget that fast, or can they find nothing new to complain about with Vista? Either way, if history continues to repeat itself, it looks like Vista could become one of Microsoft's best operating systems ever.

BOYCOTT VISTA!
Operating Systems submitted by reg

Dell Dudes,
Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.
The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.
US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.
The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.
Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,
The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.
Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.
Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?
BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!
If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.
Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?
Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista.

DUDE! You're Getting Soo Sued! was Dell, you're going to get sued!

Dell, you can't rig your computers to avoid us determining you're lying on the price of the OS!
Dell is purposely not allowing the configuration on like models to compare Open vs Microsoft, by offering only selectively similar but not unique processors in their computers, for example on the Dell D530N vs D530
D530N Processor list:
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4300 (2MB L2 Cache,1.80GHz, 800 FSB) [Included in Price] Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6320 (4MB L2 Cache,1.86GHz,1066 FSB) [add $50 or $2/month1] Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6420 (4MB L2 Cache,2.13GHz,1066 FSB) [add $100 or $3/month1]
D530 Processor list:
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4400 (2MB L2 Cache,2.00GHz,800 FSB) [Included in Price] Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4500 (2MB L2 Cache,2.20GHz,800 FSB) [add $50 or $2/month1] May delay your Dell Inspiron 530 ship date Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6550 (4MB L2 Cache,2.33GHz,1333 FSB) [add $100 or $3/month1]
Why not have the same processors? Or all of them listed, why the limitation?
Oh you don't want us to do a straight comparison to determine you're ripping off customers, thats why!
FreeDOS = $0 not $50, $100 or what ever it is you're charging.
