Fewer Desktop Enclosures to help Dell's bottom line Desktops submitted by getgreg 04/04/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Ok, I'm not an "industry analyst" and I obviously don't have access all the data that Dell does, but from what I read it seems that across the board desktop sales are slowing and laptops are becoming increasingly popular. This really comes as now surprise to me, everyone I know who ditched their desktop for a laptop has never looked back. Anyway, if this is the case why does Dell offer, by my count, 12 different desktop enclosures?
The really crazy thing is of those 12 enclosures there are really only 5 distinct sizes: Ultra Small Form Factor, Small Form Factor, Desktop, Mini Tower, and Full Tower. Wouldn't now be a really good time to trim the number of enclosures down to 5 or even 4 enclosures? (The "small form factor" and "desktop" enclosures are almost the same size.) It seems to me that the cost savings of cutting the number of enclosures so drastically would be huge. Also, the enclosures used for the Optiplex line along with the XPS tower should accommodate every system you're currently selling. Also, at the same time you could merge Dimensions into Optiplex and Precision Workstation into XPS. Lost of people have written here about killing the product segments and making all systems available to all customers, and this would be a way to do just that. Lastly, I've seen a lot of interesting and crazy ideas here, but not a lot of ideas that I think would actually help Dell's bottom line and give customers a better product. I personally think offering fewer enclosures would do just that. It would cause Dell to have to design, manufacture, and stock fewer enclosures, make the process of buying a Dell a little less dizzying while giving home consumers a higher quality enclosure. What do you think? Man I'd love for some Dell employee's to chime in here. Maybe I'm just way off... And if I'm not, well I'd love an internship :) ![]() 10 Comments » Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by fcnc05 02/17/07 Bluetooth shoud not be an optional so expensive in Dell computer. This made me not buying along with my laptop computer, and now that i have an external one I see how it made my connections so much easier. But why pay 40 for a internal one if I can buy an external for 5??? 5 Comments » Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07
It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self. Universal power adapter (power supply) for all Dell products Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by rguptaos-dyndns 02/19/07
How many of us have to buy multiple “AC / DC Adapter or power bricks” for each of electronic devices and laptops? I have power supply adapter for home, office and travel bag… about 2-3 of these for my laptop, cell phone and external hard disk or other devices I use. Although I don't think it would be a good idea to go overboard with preinstalled software, a few free and open source software (FOSS) programs would be nice. Having a large computer company such as Dell behind these products would really give open source the traction it needs to be widely accepted. Also, FOSS does not expire or require activation such as most of the software currently bundled with Dell computers. The currently bundled programs add no value whatsoever to the product and are actually a nuisance to most people. Open source would greatly improve the out of the box user experience. These are the programs I believe would ADD VALUE to Dell computers. Laptop & Desktop Boot in seconds from Flash Drives Broadband and Mobility, Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg 02/19/07

What products I am interested in do not correlate with myself or my company size. It used to be that high-end thin-and-light laptops would not be available in the Home segment, only the Enterprise segment. I'm sorry, just because I am a small-business owner or a home user does not mean I am ready to settle for inferior options deemed "good enough" by the powers that be. New Dell Retail Store! Death to Mall Kiosks! Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by evilspell 02/16/07 Dell should open a retail store very similar to the Apple store. I know that they have small kiosks inside malls that they try to sell Plasma TV's and a couple laptops next to a guy selling knock off sunglasses and verizon cell phone sales sharks! Very unprofessional. Open a classy Dell Store and offer Tech support right in the store just like the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. 144 Comments » Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by neogamerdrew 02/19/07 When maintaining or upgrading a Dell, it is a shear nightmare to try and replace parts. Most things are not the standard ATX parts you would expect. I suggest that Dell move away from proprietary parts, and open the door for people to use after market parts. 28 Comments » Do not hire nontechnical people for techsupport Service and Support submitted by jbrogers 02/17/07
This is the main problem with the India call centers - they have no idea what they are doing. They are obviously reading a scripted diagnosing tool and have no personal knowledge of computing issues. Set up an independent business unit for GNU/Linux systems Dell, Linux submitted by glynmoody 03/02/07
Clearly, there is a huge pent-up demand for pre-installed GNU/Linux systems from Dell. But equally clearly, it would be difficult for Dell to make, sell and support such systems with its current business model. Remove metallic Windows sticker Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07
The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!) Software submitted by doomlord52 02/19/07 I think everyone agrees here. No McAfee. i cant unistall my copy because it will take all my settings for the Microsoft firewall with it. That includes my outlook settings, internet, and just about every program. Why cant i say "no McAfee please"??? is it really that hard? use Norton.... 72 Comments » Respect of the EULA terms (refund of OS) Operating Systems submitted by grosguillaume 02/19/07 On every EULA from Windows OS, it's clearly write that a consumer who disagree with the term of the EULA contract can be refunded, but it's not possible with Dell's computer. 19 Comments » Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**
I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle. Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by agreer 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. track my votes
