Built in USB Flash Drive

Laptops submitted by gradinw Jun 27

Laptops should have a built in USB flash drive that can be ejected and used whenever and then put back into the laptop. This should not be some storage spot but a live USB port that is inside the machine so that the flashdrive is always available. 14 Comments »

Discounts, Credit, or Cash for Recycling Old Laptops and Computers

Sales Strategies submitted by wendaline Jun 19

I think Dell should offer customers either a discount, credit, or cash back for recycling their old computers. Both HP and Toshiba do this, so, why not Dell? If they did this it would help the enviroment while gaining loyal customers or keeping already loyal customers from going to their competetors AND they could refurbish the old parts and start selling refurbished computers at lower prices for those of us who can't afford to spend a fortune on a new computer. Come on Dell execs listen to your consumers, the ones who pay your salery, and keep us as your customers. Do you really want the other companies to win? 1 Comment »

Eliminate M1330 heat related failures

XPS products submitted by hkt Jun 18

I'd like to bring to your attention to a design problem with the Dell XPS M1330 with the nVidia 8400 GS option.

1) PROBLEM: The heatpipe exhaust vent blocks up with dust that caused the overheating to repeatedly burnout the GPU thus having the motherboard replaced.

SUGGESTION: Dell support engineers should be made aware to blow clean the heatpipe vents when doing a motherboard replacement to avoid repeated burnouts.

2) PROBLEM: Using a thermal pad to transfer heat from the nVidia GPU to the heatpipe is not efficient enough.

SUGGESTION: I have replaced thermal pad with a copper shim to better transfer the heat. This brought down the GPU core temp. from an idle 65C down to 56C and peak temp of 91C to 71C. Observing this, it is a fairly simple revision to the heatpipe assembly to better mate the GPU to it without the thermal pad. Possibly extending the GPU heatsink further down by 1.5mm and mating it with thermal paste. The spring loaded mechanism can still acommodate for thermal expansion.

I've observed that the M1530 eliminated the issue by not using the thermal pads and directly mating the copper pipe to the GPU.

Thread with contributions from others and myself indicating how to rectify the problem.

Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade

Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by ccpljat May 6

Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less.

Work Back to the States

Service and Support submitted by meand3ts Jun 30

I have been very upset trying to get help with my Dell product. I could not understand the person and they could not understand what I was saying. So why don't you use Housewifes who don't work or Househusbands. A lot of people don't have jobs that know how to work on computers. So, instead of paying them a salary pay them on each job they do. You don't have a hourly salary, no benefits to pay, and they will have someone here in the US. Now if it is something they can't handle then they pass it on to someone that can. That person don't have to be staff but someone that knows computers. You can also offer classes to those that want more training. I am sure your complaints will go down. To make sure they have solved the problem you send a survey to the customer. 2 Comments »

Produce a laptop that can be used on a lap

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by oligarch Jun 24

Laptops have grown to be unuseable comfortably on a lap due to heat, screen position and keyboard ergonomics. I would like to retain the power of current offerings to handle video, computation and average games, but to be light and easily useable without a tray/cooler and to still have a good screen size (say 15" or so).
As power efficiency gains are always used up by more powerful processors and more complex software I do not expect power consumption to be massively less than today's average Inspiron or Latitude, so the cooling system needs to be redesigned so the base is insulated from the lap and cooling air is directed away from the body.
The screen should be mounted securely but it should be possible to raise the viewing height using some sort of cantilever mechanism. Alternatively it could be dismounted to place on a coffee table and again elevated using the same mechanism and communicate with a wireless or other means.
One possible design could use a touch screen in the base replacing the need for a keyboard. allowing use with or without the other screen.
It could be sold wth or without the demountable screen and could also be used with a much larger separate wireless monitor and /ro wireless media server. Comment »

Another comment from Michael Dell on Ideastorm.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 30

It's been well over a year since Micheal Dell commented on IdeaStorm. It was nice to see his comments, since that made it look like IdeaStorm was really valued all the way up in Dell. Starbuck's CEO has posted more recently than that on their ideastorm, and some of Dell's competitors are very open in interacting with their users on their blogs many times a month.

Back in March 2007, when Michael Dell made his first first comment on IdeaStorm he gave the quite encouraging comment:

Thank you to all of our community for your ideas and suggestions! We are listening and learning a great deal and changing our company with your ideas.
But for the past year there's no sign that he cares anymore.

Just so we know this site still matters to Dell, have Michael Dell come by at least once a year and comment on the ten highest voted ideas so we know the votes mean something too. Even if his only comment is "I can't comment on this one", we'd at least know he's aware of what the top voted ideas are. 8 Comments »

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 23 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

a top-of-the-line tablet PC

Laptops submitted by ninjagecko Jul 1

It seems that tablet PCs have gotten worse in the last 4 years; 4 years ago I got a 1400x1050 resolution 2GHz single-core tablet from an unnamed competitor. Such things are non-existent today.

I'm searching for these specs cannot find them anywhere (even in Dell's Latitude XT) and would be willing to pay almost twice the price of a regular computer to get them.

Use case:
* modern artist who might use software like Photoshop/CAD/whatever and needs speed, high resolution, and touch
* students who need a fast computer but also with touch (at the very least tablet) functionality for taking notes

absolutely necessary:
- fast CPU: >2GHz dual or quad core
- UXGA screen (1400x1050) absolute minimum, QXGA preferred
- multitouch touch screen with pen
- power cord which is guaranteed for 4+ years not to break, reasonably light too
- mouse buttons on top of trackpad... preferably options to have no trackpad but rather one of those rubbery sticks
- no number pad, since that forces one to type with one's hand twisted to the left
- full-size backspace key (which I assume is standard by now)
- not necessarily a top-of-the-line graphics card, but sufficient to for example run Compiz at a 1400x1050 or higher resolution or games from 2 years ago or so
- good speakers, unlikes some competitors

highly preferable:
- option not to install Windows in favor of installing Linux myself
- 5-year warranty, minimum 4-year
- long battery life, but not at the expense of safety (see recent explosive battery incidents) (4hr life at an absolute minimum)
- battery does not die after a year or two like some manufacturers out there; replacement battery is cheap
- S-VIdeo output
- high-res video camera with zoom (to do eye-tracking)
- [keyboard:] ctrl, fn, meta(win), and alt modifiers all to the left of the spacebar
- [keyboard:] tilde/backtick key not hidden away
- [keyboard:] menu-open key and del keys close to center of keyboard

doesn't matter:
- [keyboard:] very small space key on keyboard, split into two halves (so they can be rebound in function; see common Asian keyboards)... may want to do some usability testing on this
- weight doesn't matter
- cost doesn't matter within reason
- size doesn't matter within reason 3 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »
