Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit 06/21/07

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.

With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...

Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...

The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.

Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*

Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o

* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi. 11 Comments »

Don't overly emphasize Posting of ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 06/21/07

We are currently facing the problem of having tens of duplicates for some ideas, wasting space and time.

I think part of the problem is that you have a 729x108 and a 163x41 button for posting ideas but no real emphasis of PRIOR RESEARCH.

Often, the duplicate is only a few clicks away. I hardly can stand that. 12 Comments »

Boost sales - fix the terrible website design!

Dell Web Site submitted by broxx 06/21/07

I wrote to Michael Dell with some ideas for boosting Dell's sales and improving the customer's experience.
I got a reply - they get top marks!
From the Vice President of Intellectual Property! No really, I'm not joking!!!
Who didn't answer one point I made - What did I expect?
But suggested submitting my ideas here. 1/10 for a practical response.

So here are my ideas (for what they are worth):
My efforts to buy a new PC online (www1.euro.dell.com) was a totally frustrating experience. So frustrating that I gave up! What annoys me, as a shareholder, is that thousands of other customers must be giving up too!!
Why the gripes?
1. One is forced to choose between “Home” and “Small Business”, “Medium Sized Business” and “Large Business”. “Home Office” doesn’t even appear as an option!
2 There are about 6 processors to choose from. But what do all these processors do? Nowhere is there a simple link to explain what the difference is between them, so once again it is impossible to make a choice!
3. One can choose from the Product Family: eg Dimension, Precision, XPS. But, once again there is nothing to explain the difference!
4. If one selects a specific PC model, there are impressive graphics and the ability to rotate the picture, and a whole lot of options to choose from, such as different processors, types of windows, memory options etc. But NO clarity on what the differences are between the options and NO prices for what the various options cost.
5. I try to choose between 4 sound cards (* 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro graphics card; * 128MB ATI Radeon X1300 graphics card; * Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3000; * Integrated NVIDIA® GeForce 6150 LE graphic gpu), and click on the link to learn more. What do I get? A write up about a “SoundBlaster® X-Fi Xtreme Music Card” which wasn’t even on the list in the first place! And still nothing about cost! Wonderful!!! Stuck, once more!
6. I then try to compare a list of three PCs with different prices.
What happens? Every variable says “Up to ….”, such as memory size “Up to 4GB1 Dual-Channel DDR22 SDRAM (533MHz)”. The price is clearly specified. But I can’t see what the starting specs are for that price and obviously the price will change if I change a spec. Useless!!!
7. I tried choosing one of the PCs – a Dell Dimension E520, but the individual description that came up didn’t give me any information that would help me decide!
8. I looked for software choices. None appeared. Could I choose between Vista and XP. Apparently not. Could I buy Office or a graphics program pre-installed. It seemed not. Are there any really useful freebie programs installed. It seemed not. Another wasted revenue opportunity, and unsatisfied customer!
So there you have it – half an hour surfing through the Dell website, and I am no closer to buying a PC, nor even deciding which one I want. And if I was less computer literate I would have fled long ago!
There are two other posts here: "Simplify, Simplify!!" and "More details please"
I fully agree with their sentiments.
Someone with common sense, and practical ideas [and not a computer degree] has to to get hold of the Dell web site and seriously shake it up.
It is close to the worst sales process I have ever seen on the web.
If Dell wants this sales to work online, it must simplify the process and make it user friendly!
All that is needed is a simple web page in a grid layout, listing product types across the top and specifications down the side. Then a buyer should be able to tick his/her choice(s), and the price at the bottom or top of the page should recalculate with the resulting choice.
And every option should have a link that one can follow to find out what the item does and to get the information one needs to make a choice, and to show what the cost would be.
To make it a good shopping experience, which is efficient and rewarding, one must be able to a) find out what the difference between the options does, and b) see what is the cost of each of the options.

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

IdeaStorm should check to see if your post is similar to existing posts

IdeaStorm submitted by hjwasson 04/26/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

One of the greatest failings with IdeaStorm's otherwise wonderful concept is that many similar posts are created - and although they all get votes, no one post gets enough votes to rise to Dell's attention.

When you submit a post, I would like to see IdeaStorm search for similar posts, and if it finds any, prompt you:

Your post seems similar to this/these post(s):

1. Yes, it is. Please make my post a comment to the existing post instead (& I will vote on that post).

2. No, they are different - but related. Please associate my post to the existing post.

3. No, my post is not related - continue posting.

#2 is related to my suggestion to be able to be able to associate similar posts:

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66450/Provide_a_way_to_associate_simila...

For all of this to work, Dell would have to vastly improve it's search ability within IdeaStorm (perhaps collaborate with Google?)! Use Google's advanced search features, with www.ideastorm.com as the domain to search, if you want to see for yourself the differences in how well the search features function.

Duplicate ideas suggestion feature has been added.

TheOpenCD.org should be an option for any Dell OS, regardless if Windows or Ubuntu

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 05/26/07

Dell should offer the TheOpenCD.org CD as an option for customers to select when configuring their purchase. Again, irrelevant of Windows or Ubuntu. TheOpenCD offers the following Software Suites for Free and without the usual Bloatware that irritates customers:

Design - Blender, GNU Image Manipulation Program, Inkscape, NVU, Scribus, Tux Paint.

Games - Battle for Wesnoth, Enigma, Neverball, Sokoban YASC.

Internet - Azureus, FileZilla, Firefox, Gaim, HTTrack, RSSOwl, Thunderbird, TightVNC, WinSCP.

Multimedia - Audacity, Celestia, Really Slick Screensavers, Stellarium.

Productivity - MoinMoin, OpenOffice.org, PDFCreator, Notepad2.

Utilities - 7-zip, Abakt, Clamwin, GTK+, HealthMonitor, Workrave.

Due to an unpredictable change I alter my idea to !

TheOpenDisc.com CD should be given out if TheOpenCD.org is not complete enough for you! Its pretty much the same thing, opensource software for the price of Free yet many more apps! So a win win for all! Yeay!

Next step: most systems should have a choice of OS, including Linux

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by phubert 05/24/07

First step: offer Linux on -specific- systems
NEXT step: offer a CHOICE of OS on MOST systems

CHOICE is GOOD! Wouldn't it be SIMPLER FOR DELL to provide the same options for each class of system? So, a drop-down list of OS choices?

ONE web page for EACH model of system. SAME format for EVERY page! 18 Comments »

Fully Upgradeable Laptop

Laptops submitted by badblood 05/19/07

Produce a Laptop where everything can be upgraded. Asus is doing it - and here it is:

You name it: Processor, LCD, hard drive, memory, graphics card, optical drive -- take the old one out and put a new component it, all within minutes. The notebook is designed around the core principle of it being easy to upgrade.

Maybe you already have a flexible computer like this one? 9 Comments »

Advertise Ubuntu a little more loudly

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by zhinker 05/16/07 **NOT NOW**

I may be wrong about this but it doesn't seem to me like Dell's done any sort of advertising at all for the new Ubuntu pc's that it'll be rolling out soon, except for it's initial declaration I haven't heard a word about on any non-linux media (everyone using linux knows about it of course).

Unless Dell is planning on marketing this solely to linux users, it might want to let the rest of the world know that it's going to be selling Ubuntu soon (a simple photo and note on their website would be enough to make a bunch of pc buyers at least interested, and the ad wouldn't even cost anything). The problem with going after only current linux users is that you're substantially lowering your market base (which of course, is already pretty low--I realize this is just an experiment) to people who might already have pc's their perfectly happy with for the next couple of years, and I'm also worried that this perceived lack of interest might give Dell, and hence other pc manufacturers, the idea that selling linux computers is still a failing enterprise.

That's my 2 cents 28 Comments »

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.
