M1330 - More video like this on Dell product line

Education, XPS products submitted by kyliemanders 08/15/07

I came across this video on the M1330 yesterday. Not sure where but it would be great if stuff like this was available on the Dell web site. Maybe it is but I don't know how to find it.

Vote up if you agree..

I didn't know many of these features even existed when I ordered my M1330! 3 Comments »

Affordability and Durability for Student Laptop Initiative

Education, Laptops submitted by hdrews 02/21/07

If our district was to even consider a 1:1 student to computer ratio, we would need something much more affordable than what is out there now. Money could be saved by cutting storage space, video quality, and more. What our students generally need at their desks is the ability to surf the net and work in an "office" suite. Advanced projects can be done in our more robust labs.

Also, a laptop initiative is no good if in-house support increases 10-fold. These have to be durable. If they fall off a desk, they have to keep working. Replacement batteries need to be less expensive or an extra battery should come with each purchase. 18 Comments »

Option to disable the bright blue LED indicator lights on Inspiron Notebooks

submitted by hornysax 12/16/07

I am currently returning a 1420 laptop I recently purchased. The reason is because the blue LED indicator lights on the front of the laptop are too bright. I have color blindness, and my eyes may have heightened sensitivity to color contrast.

I would like accurate representaton of the LED indicator lights on your laptop brands, or an option to turn these off or reduce the brightness on them. I don't purchase any electronics that use blue LED lights.

I also currently own a 700m. The lights are a faint green, and very tame. 1 Comment »

Aluminum Keys on Dell Laptops

submitted by nsenman 12/03/07

What about putting Aluminum Keys on Dell Laptops? A lot of other companies have done so. I think it looks nicer, is more reliable, has great finger feel and response, makes the laptop look and seem more higher end quality wise.

If not all the Dell Laptops maybe at least the XPS line? 7 Comments »

Backlit Keys on Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by fwayne 04/20/07

Anyone who has used a laptop in dim or dark lighting knows that the keys are very difficult to see. Back-lighting the keys would be a huge improvement, and for those with vision imparements it could be a real useability feature. There are external keyboards on the market that have this feature and it would be great to have on a business or home class system.

One note: Please dont go for the translucent "light up the whole key" method. This is not very effective. The keys themselves should remain dark, witht the actual charactors being illuminated.

Also, a competitor has used a screen mounted LED to project light onto the keys, this isnt all that great either.

Do you agree? 5 Comments »

XP should be made available in all computers

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rickk1 11/18/07

Since Microsoft will continue to support XP until 2014 and since Microsoft is coming out with XP Service Pack 3 around Spring 2008, XP should still be made available for all computers both desktop and laptop. 4 Comments »

Optimize laptop chassis size - do not add dead space around of the LCD's edges.

Laptops submitted by mandarinka 11/26/07

One of the main constraints laptop design should heed is that of maximum portability and minimal size at the given LCD size category. Why? The LCD is actually the sole component taht cannot be shrunk (if so, we would have a computer from lower size category) - so the size of the display is the minimum for the chassis size. Now what I think good design shouldn't fail in: there should be as little "dead space" along the LCD's edges as possible. I have seen 15,4" laptops that waste more than 3cm of width this way, while the excess height of the lid is even bigger (with widescreen units anyway). Off course, the new Asus Eee is an extrme example of this: 7" display in 10" size enclosure.

I suggest Dell should make sure the components are aranged in as compact way as possible inside the laptop, so that the chassis isn't bigger than necessary. Every 1cm in excess greatly reduces the maneuverabilty of the computer, especcially with 15,4" and 14" widescreen models, 12" ultraportable models on the other hand benefit from every milimeter of size reduction, as portability is of most importance in their segment; the size reduction also brings the weight down a bit. 3 Comments »

Smaller rubber feet that don't fall off

Inspiron products submitted by jtrpop 07/02/07

The rubber feet on my Inspiron are big and get snagged when slipping into my computer bag. One has already fallen off. Make them slimmer and less prone to falling off. 24 Comments »

Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit 06/21/07

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.

With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...

Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...

The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.

Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*

Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o

* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi. 12 Comments »

Gaming Notebooks for Girls..!

Gaming, Laptops submitted by ozzy_girl Jan 2

Why do gaming noteboooks all have to be Black or Silver?
Ok the XPS 1530 does came in White in Oz but where is the contrast pizazz?

There are a lot of females out there who play Sims2 and other games who want the Notebook they own colouful to match..! Ok the Inspiron 1520 comes in 8 colours but we need more flashy panels and features. Take the Asus Lamborghini VX2 for instance, incredible characteristics I adore, just not that price tag..!

Give us the JaGuR (G for girls)..!
We want high end processors Core2 Duo T7900 2.8ghz
with 4gb (not 4mb) RAM....at least a bit cheaper (thnx for the heads up winoffice)
High end Graphics NVidia GeForce 8800M GT 512MB GDDR3 or more..!
High display 1600 x 1050 but please please take away the shiny screens, it makes showing your friends your vids on the YouTube site impossible..!
The 15.4 inch size suits well and 2.5kgs a good weight
Make the Hard drive 7200rpm but you can keep it 120gb just give us an external sata connection for our back up drives..!
A decent docking station that is not just a USB replicator we want to unclick and Go Girls..! 19 Comments »

Remote Keyboard / Removable Keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by cjbarth Jan 7

It would be nice to have a device like this (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/3848) as an option for computers, notebooks and desktops included. It would be great for connecting your system to a TV at home, or setting your notebook up on the projector stand in a conference room and still completely controlling it from a distance.

If it were possible it would also be nice to have the keyboard in notebooks removable so that it can be taken out and used on the couch or away from the projector. It would even be nice to just be able to move the keyboard to a comfortable location on the desk. It could be Bluetooth and rechargeable and charge when it is 'docked' with the notebook. For compatibility reasons it might be necessary to have such a keyboard operate in USB mode while 'docked' and the Bluetooth when undocked.

Fix CPU Whine On Intel Systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by codemonkeyx 08/08/07

This issue has been ignored by Dell, and other manufactures for far too long. I was hoping the issue had been addressed with the new M1330 laptop I just bought, but it has not.

When the CPU enters low power mode it makes a whining sound all the time. It's quite bad, and has been reported all over the web by thousands of users.

Dell needs to sit down with Intel, and figure out what is going on and stop ignoring the problem. 80 Comments »

Eraser Head Mouse

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by cjbarth Jan 4

While touchpads are certainly easier for some people to work with, nothing compares to the speed and accuracy of an eraser head mouse on a notebook, especially while working in a car or in other unfavorable conditions. Please make the eraser head mouse either optional or standard on all notebooks. I shouldn't have to get a business line notebook to benefit from this really simple feature.

In addition, it would be very nice if you had the scroll button like ThinkPad’s do. They have a blue mouse button that you press while moving around the eraser head mouse that would cause the screen to scroll and pan. That is so much more effective than working with the edges of a touch pad.

Move Headphone jacks BACK to side on future laptops (i.e. post-1525)

Laptops submitted by mdburkey Jan 11

I just checked out the 1525 and was totally underwhelmed.

I especially do not like the new location of the headphone jacks -- on the FRONT of the unit. If you are trying to use the laptop in YOUR LAP the headphone jack will basically impale your crotch -- and pretty much makes it nigh on to unusable on an airplane for watching movies.

Additionally, moving ALL the ports off the back of the unit onto the sides is similarly irritating as well. One of the good things historically about Dell laptops has been that they had two USB ports on the back and two USB ports on the side -- which meant you had two you could get to easily for flash drives and two that you could leave more permanently tethered devices plugged into all the time (printers, wireless mouse fobs, etc). Now they ALL have to stick out the side of the laptop and get in the way more -- and get bumped more.

Basically, with the exception of the HDMI port, it is inferior to the 1520 in almost every respect -- especially ergonomically.

Yes, it is "pretty" and thinner -- but so what???

Would someone at Dell please fire the Apple-wannabe designers and hire back some real design engineers who actually do usability studies on their products rather than just designing them to look pretty and satisfy the college age fashionistas?

Who really CARES if you can order the d*mn thing in Neon green, chartreuse, or lavender as long as it works well, is reliable, and has all the appropriate ports in CONVENIENT locations?!?!?!?

The world needs a lot less Stephen Jobs and a lot more Henry Fords -- i.e. you can have any color you want as long as its black! 7 Comments »

Gobuntu Compatable System

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dpic 11/28/07

Take linux to a new level and support Gobuntu!

"Gobuntu is a GNU/Linux operating system, derived from Ubuntu, that endeavors to adhere to the Free Software Foundations four freedoms and intends to provide a base for other free software platforms to build upon with minimal modification required. It does this by only including open-source non-restricted software. This means there will be no firmware, drivers, applications, or content included in Gobuntu that does not include the full source or whose license does not provide the right to use, study, modify, and redistribute the body of work."

This means offering Gobuntu pre-installed and fully compatible with at least one laptop and one desktop as well as compatible with at least one printer.

After adding support for Ubuntu, Gobuntu should be very easy to offer. 35 Comments »
