No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Add USB port 5V supply to Laptop Powersupply units

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by michael.schwarz May 14

Today a travelling laptop user has often additional mobile devices which are charged by the USB port like Music players, mobile phones, PDA's etc. To charge these the Laptop unfortunate must be switched on. If the Transformator/ power supply for Laptops would have an USB power supply connector, - devices could be charged indendent from running the Laptop. (e.g. at nigth in Hotel)

I experienced such capability some time ago by an third party Power supply and found it very valuable.

If this would be added to Dell Laptop power adapters it would offer and added value to the today mobile Users. 1 Comment »

Use Videoconferencing CRM to Help Store Customers

Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by trueblue May 12

Store employees for mass retailers are not knowledgeable about Dell's products. Dell should use a videoconferencing CRM system to direct store customers to expert Dell sales consultants for live, face-to-face help. ClairVista's Live Expert system is perfect for this. 1 Comment »

Buy Amiga; Buy Commodore

Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by badblood 09/11/07

Buy Amiga, revive it, breath new life into it. Bring back the Commodore line of products. Do it for us, do it for the industry. You know there are people who don't even know what the Commodore 64 is anymore.

Smartbay option on your future notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 27

Smartbays are a fantastic idea and are already implemented on alienwares m15x. They can act as an extra hard drive or solid state drive or better still, a extra battery. They are a great multi-functioncal bay for larger peripherals and would fit perfectly in your future 15" and 17" notebooks. 5 Comments »

System Update

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by ahazan Feb 9

Crrently in Dell software & driver support dell takes your system tag and shows all available drivers and software for all peripherals that were offered on that system. that could mean 5 video cards 3 wireless nics, 4 CDR drives. It should be more like windows update or Lenovo thinkvanatge system update where it detects what hardware you have (or looks up what was shipped by service tag) and offers you only software and drivers for WHAT YOU HAVE. and also only offers drivers newer than what's currently installed 9 Comments »

Customer service phone line

Service and Support submitted by perryphilipp Feb 9

DELL, I have no trouble phoning or emailing India to sort out any queries in relation to my DELL order but please for the love of all that is holy, have these lines open on a weekend!

I have exactly 3 working days before my laptop is due to be delivered and I'm sure it's not going to make it due to the fact my delivery status page still says it is in pre-production, so that gives the guys in ireland 3 days to put it together, box it, send it to Kent, England.....I'm thinking that it is unlikely and as per usual with DELL I will waste a day at home for no-one to deliver it as it won't have even been pieced together yet.

Just be honest with us and give us advanced warning that its not going to make it, other than not telling us till the day itself and we all lose money when we could have been working. Comment »

Students.....surely there's and opportunity here

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by perryphilipp Feb 9

Ok so I'm a graduating student so this is more for my peers, but surely there is the option to have and education option here in the UK, i know the USA has a dell education site.

Every year there are hundreds of thousands of students within our universitys, colleges, and high schools that seek computers for their studies....

Obviously there are the usual offers in September when everyone is starting the new educational year, but could there not be a whole educational sub-site, with competitions, organised DELL events at universities etc... much like Xbox Live is doing with live gigs etc,,,

There would be the opportunity for DELL to not only procure personal information of thousands of people to sell or do with what they want, but also it would improve their general image, and if someone has a computer that is good quality during university they tend to stick with that brand.

I am waiting for another DELL laptop for myself, as they are all i've ever had and quality-wise have never let me down, comparitively my friend sticks to sony and has done the last 10 years.

Its not all about discounts, its also about regular interaction with your customers, on various levels. 3 Comments »

Dell should start Ready-To-Ship business model

Sales Strategies submitted by gskreddy Feb 9

Dell should start ready to ship model at least for most popular models like XPS or Inspiron at least in DHS segment. For example in resent past XPS 1330 notebook is hot selling choosing highly shipped 3 configurations like High-End, Low-End and Mid Range configurations and keep them ready and add a separate section in the website when customer chooses them Dell should be ready to ship these systems with in 7days or less.

This will definitely work in favor of Dell in obtaining lost ground in market especially in emerging markets like APJ and EMEA.
This will also encourage/attract some more customers who can't wait for long Build-Ship timelines. 13 Comments »

Make secondary batteries an option on all laptops

Laptop Power submitted by eaglewonj Jan 24

Please design/allow for the optical drives on all future laptop models to be removed and replaced with an additional battery that slides into the same slot. I see this on some models of laptops and feel it would be nice to have as an option to expand runtime when you don't need an optical drive. It also allows you to swap batteries without shutting down the laptop. 6 Comments »

Dell should post more Dell interview videos on Direct2Dell or Studio Dell.

Dell Community submitted by jervis961 11/05/07

Why should we have to scour the internet to find interviews like the following? Dell should just post it or give a link to the original site that hosts the video.

Dell and HP Unite!

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by daniel117 06/29/07 **NOT LIKELY**

I was thinking of a merger of the two best-selling computer companies out there, HP and Dell. Merging these two together can do good, Dell can have more user-friendly and multimedia features while HP can have more financial support. And the power of these two can out-rival IBM. 11 Comments »

Dell add Skype to Tech Supports Abilities

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by jorge 06/29/07

Dell give Tech Support Skype abilities so they can be reached for free (literally) which reduces cost for Dell and it gives video support so customers can show tech's any visual issue if needed. Same for Support they can visually show customers what to do through Skype video! Even if the Tech support person has bad English they can visually communicate and resolve issues.

You already have the chat feature but no video, this will aid support in so many ways!

Do it now!

PS: even if you don't use Skype I'm just talking about Skype type features, like over the net voice (VOIP) and video, I don't care if its Dell-ype or something else, Skype is just the in word at the moment. So don't go getting antsy about the name, ok.

Suggestion: display comments in latest-first order

IdeaStorm submitted by phubert 02/23/07

A number of 'threads' are getting a bit long. It takes awhile to scroll down to the latest comments.

Latest-first (at least as an _option_) would eliminate this problem.

**

Also: PAGINATE thread displays so only the first page is loaded when the user selects the topic! 50 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

No more stickers

Advertising and Marketing submitted by max 02/24/07

Include the sticker on a sticker sheet, allowing the end-user choice over sticker positioning (or to not have a sticker).

(Don't have stickers on the machine saying "designed for Windows Vista", "Intel Inside", etc.) 19 Comments »

Room in printer for extra cartridge(s)?

Printers and Ink submitted by kschang 06/16/07

The printer itself should have a small compartment to fit an extra set of cartridges, esp. inkjets.

Inkjets nowadays have so little ink in the carts (as little as 8 mL of ink!), one should always have a spare onhand.

However, instead of storing that elsewhere and finding room for them, why not just a small compartment IN the printer itself? Maybe off to the side?

(This would not be practical for a laser, but a laser cart lasts thousands of pages, compare to only hundreds for the inkjets)

The spare cart can be used to tide the user over for the 'weekend' until a new cart is obtained. The new cart then goes into the "standby" compartment.

In fact, if the compartment is empty, let that trigger a warning on the PC that "it's time to order a new cart" and offer to connect to the Dell website for reordering. 3 Comments »
