Don't limit Ubuntu sales (like the media's reporting you are doing)

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 05/08/07

From: http://techiqmag.com/2007/05/08/dell-limits-ubuntu-linux-sales/

If you’re planning to load up on Dell’s new Ubuntu Linux systems for a corporate department or small business, Dell may have a surprise for you. As the old saying goes, read the fine print.

Yeah, I know the article mentions you have similar limitations on Windows Home machines -- but don't limit the Ubuntu sales for small-businesses. It's not clear from the article if you intend to do that or not. 8 Comments »

Release the Axim hardware specifications

Broadband and Mobility, Service and Support submitted by jtzapp 05/09/07 **REVIEWED**

Now that Dell has gotten out of the handheld market, why not release the specifications for the chips et al, for the Axims? I would love to be able to run linux on my Axim X50v, and I'm sure I'm not the only one -- but that's not really going to happen unless developers can tailor the kernel to the hardware. Michael Dell and the rest of the company have recently made a public promise to further linux on Dell hardware, and this would go a long way towards engendering brand loyalty. I don't see how this can harm Dell in any way, and as I said, would certainly help to assure me that Dell doesn't want to leave its customers out in the cold even if they no longer sell the product. We're not asking for any sort of support whatsoever, just the ability to exercise our freedoms with respect to the products we purchase.

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

Advertise Ubuntu a little more loudly

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by zhinker 05/16/07 **NOT NOW**

I may be wrong about this but it doesn't seem to me like Dell's done any sort of advertising at all for the new Ubuntu pc's that it'll be rolling out soon, except for it's initial declaration I haven't heard a word about on any non-linux media (everyone using linux knows about it of course).

Unless Dell is planning on marketing this solely to linux users, it might want to let the rest of the world know that it's going to be selling Ubuntu soon (a simple photo and note on their website would be enough to make a bunch of pc buyers at least interested, and the ad wouldn't even cost anything). The problem with going after only current linux users is that you're substantially lowering your market base (which of course, is already pretty low--I realize this is just an experiment) to people who might already have pc's their perfectly happy with for the next couple of years, and I'm also worried that this perceived lack of interest might give Dell, and hence other pc manufacturers, the idea that selling linux computers is still a failing enterprise.

That's my 2 cents 28 Comments »

Offer Vi Reference Mug as option or included with Linux OS's

Linux submitted by jorge 05/23/07

Dell should offer or include the Vi Reference Mug for Linux OS sales. This will provide novice (aka noob's, hey need to use Linux lingo) a handy editing reference as they are weened off of Notepad, MS-Word and other GUI based editors. This will reduce the amount of support calls as to why they can't edit a file or get out of input mode or into it, not to mention why their files are filled with ~'s. 10 Comments »

Ubuntu on the Latitude D630

Latitude products, Linux submitted by jmxz 05/24/07

Based on advice from dell_admin1 in this thread: http://ideastorm.com/article/show/67329 who writes

Re: no OS on other models - you might want to pick a model you'd want to see added to Dell's n-series, and then post an idea specifically saying that. (unless you already have) Just a thought.
it sounds like Dell is suggesting it's useful to submit IdeaStorm ideas on specific models.

But dell_admin1: no, I don't really want the D630 "added to the n-series", where it seems computers often cost more for the same hardware - I want Ubuntu as a choice on the standard D630 which seems to have excellent price/value right now. 1 Comment »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Give me a Linux Latitude! (D630, if only one...)

Latitude products, Linux submitted by lordxale 05/25/07

The D620 is a great machine. The D630 is an even greater machine. When dedicated graphics are finally offered on it, I'll be buying one as soon as I can. However, I am also a Linux user. The options for getting rid of Windows on any of the Latitudes are unattractive at best. If I could either buy without Windows or, even better, buy one with Ubuntu 7.04 preloaded, I would be ecstatic.

To me, it makes little difference other than price. I will likely install my own Linux distro anyway (Kubuntu, in fact), but I would love to support Ubuntu any way I can, or just not pay any MS tax. I'll certainly need to dual boot it with Windows for some apps I can't get away from (games only!), but I've got a Vista Business license waiting for it, so I won't need to pay MORE for another one I won't need. Surely there must be many others in the same boat I am! Lucky for you, Dell, I'm a diehard Latitude fan - a D630 will be my 4th; even if it came with WinME I would still buy it. But, I digress...

Give me a Linux Latitude! 15 Comments »

Dell + Opensource = Win!

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jpe2000 05/30/07

I'm not really into pre-built but when my grandma got her $400 Dell I was impressed.

I am a user of Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS.

Anyway, I think that Dell needs to start making ads about their new Linux and FreeDOS systems. I think that Dell should look into more than just one Linux distro and at least look at two or more.

First (what I started out with) was PCLinuxOS. I was amazed at the difference it was between Windows. It was, however, one of the easest distros I've ever used (easer than Ubuntu). I think that Dell should offer PCs with Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, and Gentoo.

Sure, maybe Gentoo is taking it a bit extream for the average user but the user could learn from the ground up from using Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS (or even BOTH!).

As for Dell's Windows PCs, I believe that Dell should enforce opensource software for Windows. For example, new Dell computers should come with Firefox (along with Internet Explorer), OpenOffice, and many more. 1 Comment »

It's all about personal friendships and school rivalries. [idea below]

Dell, Linux submitted by jmxz 05/30/07

The idea isn't obvious without some background info, so let me give that first.

Background to help the idea make sense

I'm starting to think bringing back Linux and XP is all about personal friendships than about money or technology. Ballmer even says as much in a different deal he brokered.

It's been reported that Bill Gates and Michael Dell were friends; but what I didn't remember is that Balmer's a long time friend and classmate of Scott McNealy of Sun.

The Red Wings jerseys are a symbol of McNealy's and Ballmer's Michigan roots. The two have been friends for a long time, McNealy said. They grew up across town from each other near Detroit and attended Harvard University and Stanford University together.

...Ballmer and McNealy say they are buddies once again and Microsoft and Sun have struck a ten-year agreement to work together on product interoperability.

"We couldn't think of any other way to make a stronger statement to you all about how serious we are about this partnership other than to, as we head into playoff time, exchange gifts as long-time Motown Red Wing fans," McNealy said as he and Ballmer traded autographed jerseys of the Red Wings, Detroit's National Hockey League team.
The key in the Sun deal is to note that Balmer said that exchanging hockey jerseys with his former classmate was a "stronger statement" than the $2 billion they paid the Dell competitor the same day.

This isn't about money - it's about egos of billionaires. It's about school rivalries.

Back when it was the college dropout running Microsoft, there was great camaraderie between Microsoft and Dell. With Balmer's larger role, that love moved to his Stanford & Harvard buddies.

So here's the idea

Dell - if you have someone from Detroit who also went to both Harvard and Stanford Business School together with Ballmer like McNealy did - promote them to a president or better title and perhaps you can win back some of the same love (and $2 billion) Balmer gave his classmate McNealy.

If not, team up more with an OS vendor led by someone has an entrepreneurial spirit that Michael Dell himself had -- founding a successful company while still studying in college. Oh, and I note that Mark Shuttleworth meets that description exactly - having founded Thawte while studying at University of Cape Town (UCT). Mark, of course is the CEO of Canonical - vendor of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Have Ubuntu loaded machines on display at Dell Direct Stores

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by joeevil5000 05/31/07

If Dell is pushing for alternitve OS's to get in the mainstream, they should show them to thier customers in action. There should be at least one machine running Ubuntu at every Dell Direct Store kiosk. That way, dell sales reps can show it to customers, and compare it to Windows as to what it can do. Dell gets customers from computer savvy geeks, to the computer illiterate grandma, but thier core consumer is the computer illiterate. They are more than likely going to want to go with a Windows system, because it's what they have heard of, and known about for so many years, but, it will let them know that Windos is'nt the ONLY OS there is. Simply put, by displaying Ubuntu, people will get to know that it exists, and what it is, and spread the word. 4 Comments »

Dell: Offer OPTIONAL Dual-boot Linux and Windows - on your new Ubuntu systems!

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies submitted by phubert 06/01/07

Other suppliers of primarily LINUX systems (Pogolinux, for example) offer this.

If you wish to compete with existing 2nd tier suppliers who are clearly responding to their own customers' requests, you should offer dual-boot configurations.

Depending on what systems you offer, DEVELOPERS will be among those buying.

Virtualization (along with such as CrossOver Office) is one approach, but dual boot isn't going away yet!

I believe more are likely to try your Linux PC offers if they can have dual-boot as well.

**

Let me suggest XP Pro or a higher-end Vista (since XP won't continue to be _available_ to you TO offer).

**

Since this refers specifically to the new Ubuntu systems, it is not a duplicate suggestion.

**
2007-08-09
Clearly, Dell's latest statements about their directions in support of virtualization could easily make THIS suggestion moot.

I think a round of applause is due Dell for this! 21 Comments »

Dell with Opensuse (not only Ubuntu )

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by xhen 06/01/07

I have read recently about this new idea of DELL which is perfect, but in my opinion (working as IT manager On Veolia environment for 8 years) I think dell should try opensuse instead of ubuntu, I think is more easy for the Final User who need to change from windows to Linux.
With opensuse you needn´t run any sudo command (ok sometimes yes but are less) to install things like ubuntu.
In my personal opinion and after my own experience, recently (i´m not very familiarize with linux) I have spent 5 days trying to install ubuntu in one computer and finally I have decided to give it up and install again Opensuse 10.2 which is more efficient for the final user and more friendly.

I hope Dell give us more options not only ubuntu, especially nowadays when Microsoft and Novell have made a deal to get a better relationship between Opensuse and Windows (actually a better relation of windows with Linux-Opensuse not on the contrary), I think this would be one of the most important distribution of Linux for companies which want to change windows for Linux.

Best Regards ;)
