Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by qgonjon 07/16/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop.

My request is simple. Can someone fix and verify that this page works well with Linux browser technology? So, that users can enjoy purchasing your Linux products and demonstrate that Dell really cares about their customer's operating system preference.

Dell I wish you the best in this venture as your success in this territory will help the Linux Desktop become a reality to the open source community.

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

BIOS must support the memory remapping feature

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by fg 03/10/07

In most Dell systems that states the maximum memory is always followed with caveat e.g. "The total amount of usable memory available will be less than 4GB, depending on actual system configuration"

As per following KB, please upgrade all BIOS on systems to support this memory remapping feature!

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Hey Dell! How about using better quality motherboard?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by area5x1 05/01/07

Hey I got an idea: How about you start putting better motherboards into your computers? Sure it might raise the price, but it's good to know (or not know, for 90% of Dell customers) that you're getting a better product (at least partially) that is upgradeable. Here's a list of sample good motherboards that might be useful for higher-end machines:

- Gigabyte DS3 Rev 1.3
- Abit AB9 QuadGT
- DFI Infinity P965
- DFI Infinity 975X
- MSI P6N SLI Platinum or Diamond
- Asus Striker
- Gigabyte DQ6 3 Comments »

Fire Your Sales Force

Service and Support submitted by creativeguy 04/22/07

Your corporate sales force is useless. I visit the website and pick out a configuration that I think is suitable for my clients. I will take the time to copy down these requirements, and then forward them to the sales person who has made me mad the least the last time. The quote comes back higher than what I could have purchased it off the website. When you point this out to them, they give you a song and dance about how they can not match it or that the price on the website is wrong. If they come back with a better price, you have to go through line by line on each item to make sure they actually gave you everything you asked for, or worse they change things like memory speed to get you the price. I want someone I can work with, and is reliable. I recently had the installation of a $23,000 order held up for 2 weeks because the sales person could not even call me back with a tracking number. Poor internal management of returned items from shipping caused this problem. The DHL driver left the APC on the truck, and then returned it to Dell instead of bringing it back the next day. All I was looking for is that there was a mistake, or it shipped 2 days late or something. We had to go to the individuals manager because the owner of the company was so mad he was going to return the entire $23,000 order. This has been a consistent pattern since last summer. The service and support are getting worse. If this is what we can expect, cut costs by firing these people. 4 Comments »

SOFTWARE INSTALLED OPTION

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by creativeguy 04/22/07

Just so you know - every single Dell computer that comes out of the box gets formatted and clean installed before it is ever turned on. When I am installing for corporate customers, we do not want your Dell support software, any of the AOL (etc) stuff, and all of the other stuff. To the companies paying Dell to install the crap (and SPYWARE), it never makes it to the user. To Dell, I will pay the couple extra dollars not to have this stuff installed. Give me an opption to select what I want on the system (EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM). There is no benefit to clicking on corporate from home. Why even bother have the sections? When you are dealing with corporate customers, we already have enterprise versions of Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus programs. 3 Comments »

Better Support For Consultants & IT Professionals

Service and Support submitted by creativeguy 04/22/07

The Dell Certified Technican program needs to have added benefits to it. I have looked at the Dell Tech program several times, but I do not see any benefit to the program. Initially, the materials on the website were completely out of date. None of the 2 year old servers we had were even covered by the information. When it was finally updated, I realized the information was the same thing that I had been doing for 13 years. It is good for reference at best. We have most of our clients buy the Gold service agreements. As a consulting firm, our clients do not want to pay for us to be on the phone. All problems are diagnosed by our technicians ahead prior to calling in to support. You could save a HUGE amount of money on phone and support costs by having a DCT website where we could just cover the problems with check boxes, and then determine the replacement parts we would need. As a DCT, Dell would have confirmed that the technician installing the parts only service would be qualified. You might want to establish free training in the depots or if you go to store fronts, somewhere in the store. Why pay technicians to come out when you can have certified tech's everywhere. In some cases, we have clients that have home PC's that have the India support with them. If I have to talk to another script reader again, wasting my time when all I need them to do is order me parts ... If you put a program like this in place, have current hardware onsite, and made an effort to contact consultants and IT Professionals, they would flock to the program. I would be first in line. 2 Comments »

Extra Quality (tested) PC/Laptop with money back garantie in case of hardware error

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by borneoo 04/22/07

Extra QUALITY, of course for extra money !
(Quality means: extra long life parts, tested parts, tested together,etc... not just a word in the advertisement! !!!!, even less feature but all safe / 100%)

But I MUST WORK !!, not just 24h garantie, money back in case of hardware error !!!

...sometimes the garantie is nothing when the stuff is failed in the worst time!!!

No TPM

Desktops and Laptops submitted by marco925 04/22/07

All Dell PCs should not come with TPM at all until an owner override solution is implemented by the TCPA. Trusted computing can be a problem in the industry if there is no control by the user. I know that the software I run is what i want running and if I can't control it, I know I would get upset. Trusted Computing can be a great thing but it provides manufacturers and software publishers with more power.

The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) is an alliance of Microsoft, Intel, IBM, HP and AMD which promotes a standard for a `more secure' PC. Their definition of `security' is controversial; machines built according to their specification will be more trustworthy from the point of view of software vendors and the content industry, but will be less trustworthy from the point of view of their owners. In effect, the TCG specification will transfer the ultimate control of your PC from you to whoever wrote the software it happens to be running. (Yes, even more so than at present.)

TC provides a computing platform on which you can't tamper with the application software, and where these applications can communicate securely with their authors and with each other. The original motivation was digital rights management (DRM): Disney will be able to sell you DVDs that will decrypt and run on a TC platform, but which you won't be able to copy. The music industry will be able to sell you music downloads that you won't be able to swap. They will be able to sell you CDs that you'll only be able to play three times, or only on your birthday. All sorts of new marketing possibilities will open up.

I would like a numeric keypad on 17" notebooks like the Inspiron 9400.

Inspiron products submitted by roni44 04/22/07

I would like a numeric keypad on 17" notebooks like the Inspiron 9400 because several marks set a numeric keypad on their 17" notebooks and I believe its a great advantage.

Advertise Graphics RAM correctly

Advertising and Marketing submitted by joffe100 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When we say we want to buy a 512Mb graphics card we really do want a 512Mb graphics card - not 512Mb with 256mb physical memory with 256mb shared! This is really BAD and misleading advertising - you do not see other RAM memory being sold 1Gb (512Mb physical, 512Mb shared!)

Should read: 512Mb physical memory and it actually be 512Mb physical memory

NOT: 512Mb** and then some tiny asterixed disclaimer on a linked page that points out that the 512Mb is some funky combination of 3Mb physical and the rest being pulled from virtual memory - this kills many graphic intense apps and games...

suprised no-one has sued over this? Not sure many buyers are even aware....

Virus protection

Software submitted by fleahh 04/22/07

It would be excellent to see a non-trial antivirus software preinstalled on the computer. And not the regular HEAVY load norton or mcafee which are hard to uninstall aswell.

Why not try something new, something fast, like NOD32. Very effective fast scanning and lightweight virus protection. 2 Comments »

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Remove metallic Windows sticker

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07

The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!)

Replace the metallic sticker with an easily removable one !!! Dell should be large enough to stand up to Microsoft (who no doubt enforces the metal stickers). 23 Comments »

Could Dell Own Green?

Environment submitted by adrian 02/01/07 **REVIEWED**

Environmental concern and sustainability are today real issues with consumers and voters in many of Dell's markets. It looks as if a genuine commitment to reducing carbon and cleaning up their footprint will become a more important factor for companies wanting to strengthen consumer loyalty in the coming years.

Dell has already made its environmental commitment clear. My suggestion is that this could become a hallmark of the company - why not make the products, literally, green? If Apple can own 'pretty' and IBM/Lenovo can own 'serious', why can't Dell own 'green'?
Dell continues to do a lot to support our environment like our Plant a Tree for Me program and other activities documented on our Environment blog on Direct2Dell. Click here for more details.

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.
