video cards and drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell Web Site, Software submitted by learmont 05/04/07

request about support for video cards in laptops. I have a basically brand new Inspirion 9400 with the raedon x1400 video card. I want to play Everquest on the laptop. However, the latest driver that I can get from Dell is version 6618. To play, I must have version 6666. ATI will not let me download the driver update from their site. They say to talk to the laptop maunfacturer. The 9400 is a replacement for a balky E1705 that I bought in Oct 2006. I was playing Everquest on the E1705 until there was a crash for other reasons. Now the game has been updated to a new video standard and will not initialize at all. Without the driver, I have two everquest accounts that I cannot access. Dell needs to put the driver on their website for download even if they have to strongarm ATI for the necessary codes. Comment »

Up to date video drivers: ATI requires Dell's permission...

Gaming, Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by zorgkang 05/08/07

Dell doesn't bother "forwarding" to us video card driver updates released by ATI. There is an easy solution though and all that Dell has to do is say "ok" to ATI. Please read on.

When trying to update directly from ATI, I am told that I can't update my system and I should ask my laptop manufacturer. Frustrated with this, I search for another way to update my drivers and find much information on

http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/< found out that ATI is not to blame, but Dell is. ATI comments: "We are working diligently on attracting tier1 OEMs to participate in the mobile catalyst program. Once that happens, we will update the validation tool to allow the mobile catalyst drivers to install on those platforms."

So this thread is to strongly insist that Dell join the mobile catalyst program immediately! Please let Dell know we are not satisfied with the video card driver support they provide! 6 Comments »

Updated Driver Releases

Dell Web Site, Latitude products submitted by gsulfaro Apr 7

I have noticed that the Video Card Drivers for the Intel X3100 Graphics Driver that ships on the Latitude D630 has not been updated since the 30/5/2007.

Intel have released several new revisions since then but the one on your website is still outdated and we are not able to install the package directly from the Intel website.

Please update your drivers. 2 Comments »

XPS drivers

Gaming, Service and Support submitted by forestfire_88 04/21/07

I have two Insp XPS laptops, both Gen1 and Gen2 models. When I purchased these laptops, I was expecting to use it for gaming as well as other tasks. But a few months after the purchase of Gen2, there are no longer any new version drivers on the Dell support web site. It's 2007 now, and the video card driver posted on dell support site was released in 2005. The worst part is that nvidia.com and ati.com drivers does not work with the Dell systems. I pay over $3000 per laptop, I think the least Dell can do is provide updated version drivers, especially for the video card driver for the XPS line product. So, PLEASE UPDATE THE DRIVERS!!!!!!!!!! 2 Comments »

Upgradable graphics in the m1530!!! (no more soldered cards)

Gaming, XPS products submitted by theideasman Mar 4

Im sick of my laptop graphics getting old and then finding that i need to buy an all new system. Cant the xps come with modular cards (mxm) that can be upgraded direct from dell if the consumer requests a graphics upgrade. Of course there will be a cost involved but surely it will be better than having to buy an entire new system! 4 Comments »

Update Graphics Card Drivers

submitted by dusters16 11/10/07

(I know this has been brought up already, but there hasn't been one that has been put to action yet.)

I have two ideas for keeping graphics/video card drivers consistently updated.

A.) Develop a team/division in the company that specifies in consistantly updates/revisions of drivers for graphics/video cards.

or....

B.) Do NOT modify the grahiics/video card and drivers and just refer the customer that they need to go to the company's website that corresponds with their graphics/video card. ( I personally like this one)

Here's my story about this.

I have an XPS Gen 2 Notebook with the 6800 Ultra Go (at its time it was reviewed as "The Ultimate Gaming Laptop"). I have been doing ok for awhile until recently. I have tried to play certain games that say I meet, at least, their minimum requirements. I install the game and am full of excitement to play. I go to start the program only for it to say it will not play do to the fact that my graphics/video driver is to old and that I have to update it in order to play. Wow, what a waste of time and money.

I have been eyeing the new 1730 in amazement and just drooling over it. The major negative point, which sticks out like a dent on a brand new car, is the fact that Dell does not update their graphics/video drivers consistently, which majorly hinders "gaming" in everyway.

So I would like to actually have this specific, or at least another, " Idea " to be actually put in motion and get implemented into the ways that Dell operates. Then I will get that 1730, but until then, I will not buy a Dell as my next choice for a "Gaming" machine. 5 Comments »

Update drivers for Nvidia 8600m Gt on the Inspiron 1720

Inspiron products submitted by ali3n8 Feb 14

Hello,

As many 1720 owners that game well know there is an issue with the current drivers for the 8600m GT in vista 32bit edition. The following error is received when trying to game or use anything application that is graphically intensive "Display driver stopped responding, but has successfully recovered". Apparently this is a major issue that nvidia has acknowledged and has fixed. When will dell get on the ball put out a driver update for this card. I spent very good money for my machine love the performance but when it come to game time its pretty much hopeless. Before anyway says anything I am a Systems Engineer and know my way very well around a pc. I have tried every solution possible to fix this issue. DELL please update your drivers so I can enjoy the machine I purchased. 17 Comments »

Update drivers more often.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by laxmanb 12/31/07

Dell hasn't updated drivers for the ATi Mobility Radeon in my notebook for 7 months. Since ATi, Nvidia, and most other manufacturers release new drivers on a regular basis to OEMs (once every month), And the early Vista drivers are buggy (my display driver stops working at times after hibernating), Couldn't you just post them onto your Drivers and Downloads page on a regular basis? 5 Comments »

Advertise Graphics RAM correctly

Advertising and Marketing submitted by joffe100 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When we say we want to buy a 512Mb graphics card we really do want a 512Mb graphics card - not 512Mb with 256mb physical memory with 256mb shared! This is really BAD and misleading advertising - you do not see other RAM memory being sold 1Gb (512Mb physical, 512Mb shared!)

Should read: 512Mb physical memory and it actually be 512Mb physical memory

NOT: 512Mb** and then some tiny asterixed disclaimer on a linked page that points out that the 512Mb is some funky combination of 3Mb physical and the rest being pulled from virtual memory - this kills many graphic intense apps and games...

suprised no-one has sued over this? Not sure many buyers are even aware....

DRIVERS

Dell Web Site, Laptops submitted by dgkpcon1 11/26/07

I have an E1705 with geforce go 7900gs and no up to date drivers for it.Just because laptops have reached eol with dell does not mean that we just throw them in the garbage.Dell needs to step up to the plate and start updating drivers for all the laptops even the eol laptops. When we buy a product a laptop we do not expect it to completely useless in 2 months. So far dell has updated drivers for the 1710 and 1730,the 1705 owners need to start pressuring dell for updates. 4 Comments »

Keep drivers UP TO DATE

Dell Web Site submitted by bl4derunner 02/21/07

Keep drivers updated!!

It's a drag to have to check what chipset is used, and then find the manufacturer to get the latest drivers to solve some problems, or to get some performance improvement. 3 Comments »

Display with No Cable Connected

Monitors and Displays submitted by lyonadmiral May 12

As an IT professional who annually will setup systems in count of 50 plus, there is nothing more time consuming or wasteful than disconnecting the VGA cable from the LCD panel only to put the DVI cable on. These displays need to come from the factory with NO cables connected to the monitor. Comment »

Keep the XPS Product Line

XPS products submitted by dabrace1984 May 12

According to Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/dell-dropping-xps-focusing-on-alienware) Dell is going to be dropping the XPS product line and focusing on the Alienware brand for gaming and high performance computing. Promote this Idea to let Dell know that we need to keep the XPS desktop and laptop product line. 31 Comments »

Frequent Buyers Program

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by sgrabinar 02/26/07

I've nought two Dell notebooks in the last 7 years. Now, I'm wondering if I should be buying an XPS. Or a cute little iBook .

Maybe I should look at the Sony and Tosh too.

If that 4th or 5th Dell notebook were free...

If I could use my Amex or Qanats reward points at the Dell store _in conjunction_ with my previous Dell purchases....

Michael, all my bases would belong to you. 26 Comments »

This website is brilliant!

IdeaStorm submitted by fleahh 04/22/07

Dell rocks you!

Bringing ideas from the users to reality. Microsoft ofc doesnt like it because the users dont like Vista.

Anyway, my post is about updating drivers. I have a 2.5 year old Dell Inspiron and the drivers from ATi have been updated very often for its graphics card, however drivers from Dell havent been updated for a very long time. VERY LONG TIME.
When i try to contact LIVE SUPPORT they wont let me talk to them because i didnt purchase my computer in the US. What a useless option to have, since they are the only ones that can update the driver, no matter where you buy your computer, you should be able to contact THE tech support.
Anyway, i finally get an email from Dell support and what do they tell me? They say that Dell drivers are always up2date!! A LIE! I pointed them out that ATi has updated their drivers several times and Dell drivers remain the same release! What does the Dell support then tell me? They said, go to www.ati.com and update your drivers there. *LAUGHING OUT LOUD*
I tried that, ages ago, and i tried it over and over, but ATi wotn let you update your drivers from that page and tells you to contact your manufacturer.

So everything goes in circles.
PLEASE KEEP YOUR DRIVERS UP TO DATE. 5 Comments »

Dont forget the existing consumer

Service and Support submitted by rputran 02/26/07

I bought an Inspiron with Go 7800 video card only to find now that Dell hasnt bothered to updated the graphics driver for more than an year. It forces me to look at other sites and download modified inf files just to be able update and play newer games.

I think its also important to stop loading notebooks with unnecessary software (trial versions) - I just landed up uninstalling all that junk.

An enthusiast will want clean fast systems.

Now I want to buy another laptop and would really like to cosnider Dell again. But this time I am a little wary and will again look at all options - something that Dell could have easily avoided.

I think if you will provide better support to your existing customers you can retain theri loyalty otherwise they will go elsewhere. Comment »

Make Prices Reasonable and Allow All Possible Configurations for All Dell Machines!

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by perfectcode 08/02/07

4 days ago the XPS 720 was around $2,900 dollars. Yesterday it was at $3,000 or so with the Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ XtremeGamer (D) Sound Card standard, but Dell changed the price of the 2GB Corsair Dominator ram to $270 instead of the $100 which it was at.

Now the price of the red (they added the black XPS 710 to the XPS 720 selection and you are extremely limited to the configurations of that one) XPS 720 is at $3,299 with the same features as when it was priced at!!! I was going to buy it 4 days ago but didnt have time due to one of my family members health issue and now this happens... great... as if things can't get any worse. =/

I also dislike how limited you are when customizing a Dell computer and how inflated the prices can be sometimes. They always start you (by default) with the lowest priced configuration and then everything else that can be added costs more money. Let's say there is a 320GB HDD at 10,000RPMs, well what if I want the 160GB because 320GB is too much? Let's say it starts me out with a Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD drive, well what if I want a Blu-ray or HD-DVD drive instead? There is no options for things like that. : (

Well that's just my two cents.

Sell video card upgrades for older laptops

Service and Support, Laptops submitted by shiningarcanine 05/02/07

In 2001, I purchased a Dell Inspiron 4000 and three years later, I wanted to upgrade its graphics card, but it was not possible to upgrade it. Eventually, I purchased a 16MB graphics card off ebay, which Dell used in some Inspiron 4000 laptops, but it apparently did not upgrade mine due to the motherboard revision.

Now I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 and it has a GeForce 7 Go 7900 GS graphics card. I am not going to buy a new laptop for years, but I would still like to upgrade it as Nvidia comes out with newer mobile graphics solutions, such as the GeForce 8 Go 8800 GS or if I do not upgrade it to Windows Vista, the GeForce 7 Go 7900 GTX when I find the GeForce 7 Go 7900 GS to no longer deliver satisfactory frame rates.

Many enthusiasts who own Dell laptops feel the same way. Dell has probably lost many of them as customers because of this. The only reason I brought a new Dell laptop was because I liked the hardware build quality, but if I do not feel like Dell cares about me and it certainly feels like Dell does not (e.g. all of the junk they load onto their PCs, the recovery partition replacing the Windows and Office CDs, the lack of Dell supported upgrade-ability, etcetera), I might not buy a Dell when I buy another laptop.

Offering hardware upgrades will go a long way in rectifying that, as if I and other enthusiasts perceive that Dell's laptops will be upgradeable in the future, we will buy more of them and then come back as returning customers when we buy new ones. This might change the purchase intervals for a small portion of Dell's customers, but if Dell does this, Dell would have many more customers and many more returning customers as a result. 14 Comments »
