XPS M1530 with LED Screen and 2MP Camera

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by marcusesq Jan 10

Potential buyers enquiring about LED backlit screens for the XPS M1530 are being told the following by Dell sales reps.

"This is not part of the current plans for XPS 1530 … as 15.4" users are less weight sensitive than XPS1330 buyers, and more likely to leverage the higher-res 2Mp webcam."

I want the LED backlit screen mainly for the extra brightness and lower power consumption and really couldn't car less about a thinner screen. In fact I think the thinner screen used on the M1330 would feel too flimsy on the M1530. As it is now, I like the solid feel of the current screen on the M1530.

I have a feeling that Dell's market research regarding 15.4 users being more likely to want a 2MP camera is probably accurate, so my request is as follows:

Install LED backlighting AND a 2MP camera into the current screen form factor. 1 Comment »

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels

Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.

How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.

Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.

If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option.
In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details

Egronomic Laptop Keyboard

Laptops submitted by jrat4 Jan 14

Make a split keyboard on dell laptops (much like the old IBM thinkpad butterfly design), to reduce wrist fatigue and pain that comes from typing. In other words re-design the keyboard so that it's more egronomic! 2 Comments »

Improve the XPS One - I want to buy One!

XPS products submitted by techiedude Jan 15

How to make the “XPS One” a PC I (and others) would want to buy:
Offer options, not requirements:
- Allow us to upgrade to 4GB RAM
- Allow us to refuse the “free” Adobe suite (there’s markup somewhere in your price for a software suite I don’t want).
- Allow us to refuse the “free” MS Works or Office (see comment above)
- Allow us to upgrade the video card in the basic system without having to purchase the mid or high-end model
- Allow us to refuse the “free” TV tuner – most of us want an All-in-One PC, not a cable/satellite-TV-connected One.
- Allow us to refuse the keyboard and mouse – some of us have a set we’re already very happy with.
- Also, even though I’m an IT professional (have been for almost 20 years), I wouldn’t mind buying the three year extended warranty – just not for $250.
- This would make a great family PC for those with limited space for a computer (kitchen nook, et al) – price it and build it accordingly and “they” will buy.
- I want the Dell XPS One - just not the bundle you’re currently forcing on us.

My ideal One:
+ 4GB RAM (might be willing to settle for 2GB but don’t want to)
+ Minimum Dual-core 2.4GHz CPU
+ 250GB hard drive with 16MB cache
+ Most of us are opting for external disk arrays to protect our data anyway - we just need room for the OS and apps.
+ 256MB video card (would prefer 512MB, but 256MB may suffice)
+ No forced-to-buy software that is pre-installed other than the OS
+ I have my own Office suite, my own A/V suite and my own photo suite – let me use ‘em, please!
+ Optional TV tuner, keyboard, mouse but not required (I have my own wireless K&M that I’m very happy with)
+ An affordable extended warranty (make it affordable and I may even opt for the “CompleteCare” option)
+ I love the idea of the free recycling and the plant-a-tree – Keep it up!

The above config is real close to the “Performance One”, but it should be around $1500-$1600 once all of the newly optional items are declined (Office 2007, Adobe Elements Studio, wireless Keyboard/Mouse, a 250GB hard drive instead of 320GB, no TV tuner with remote) and the two items are upgraded (RAM, from 2GB to 4GB; warranty to three years). If the RAM can’t be upgraded, this machine should cost no more than $1500.

Dell built their business on build-to-order. Let me build my XPS One and I’ll be happy to order.

Sincerely,
A 12+ year Dell customer looking for a reason to buy a new system. 3 Comments »

Release a business version of the Alienware doublewide curved DLP display with LED illumination

Monitors and Displays submitted by jervis961 Jan 9

Businesses are always looking for ways to save desk space and a monitor like this could do the trick. Different versions could be made based on the use of the monitor. I work with up to 6 monitors at a time and would rather look at a few of these than 6 singles. I wouldn't need 2ms response time or high def resolution because my screens are mostly text based but I would like to have a neater, roomier desk area. 15 Comments »

Overclocking options

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by carlobaluta 02/20/07

Have overclocking options in BIOS, as other motherboard manufacturers have. This should apply to high end gaming machines, designed for people who know what they are doing.
Also, i believe this kind of computers are way too pricey as I can always buy the parts and build such a machine for way less and with far more options...

Save Windows XP! The clock is ticking

Microsoft will end OEM and shrink-wrapped sales of Windows XP on June 30, 2008, forcing users to shift to Vista. (System builders, meaning those who do white-box PCs, can sell XP through December 31.) Don't let that happen!

And IdeaStormers: sign the InfoWorld petition!

Add E-SATA Ports to notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dvt 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

E-SATA provides a way to add fast external storage with much better performance than USB or Firewire. Adding an E-SATA port would greatly improve the expandabiliy of Dell's notebook computers.

90 degree connector on laptop power supply

Laptop Power submitted by pennir02 Jan 9

With the Latitude laptop power supply, the DC power cord terminates in a long proprietary coaxial plug. The electrical characteristics are fine. The problem I've experience is due to the mechanical stress that is transferred to the power jack or motherboard due to the plug exiting straight out the rear. When the connector is plugged in, it's length (about 35mm or so) can cause it to break the jacks solder connections and/or snap the motherboard if the User props up the front of the laptop or accidentally hits or bumps the connector against other desktop peripherals.

It would be helpful if the laptop end of the power cord terminated in a short 90 degree plug to keep it closer to the case.

XPS M1530 $150 screen upgrade is crimminal

XPS products submitted by kingsriding Jan 12

I have been reading up on the xps quite a bit lately, I am considering a purchase. It appears the majority feel the screen resolution is sub par for the xps's price point. I completely agree! The funny thing is (or not so funny)) If you opt for the Inspiron instead of the xps, the upgrade to the high res. monitor is only $ 50 yet they ask $ 150 for the same upgrade on the xps 15.4" monitor!!!!!! What the heck is going on here. I am just about ready to give up on the whole DELL thing and go sony if I don't get some stright answers.

I am I the only one who sees the games being played here? 2 Comments »

drop DHL as a shipping courier

Service and Support submitted by hrabak 06/01/07

I suggest that Dell drop DHL as their overnight shipping courier. I have been generally unsatisfied with their service to my workplace in the past, but this week was the icing on the cake. I'm very pleased with how Dell went above and beyond to resolve the situation, even refunding my shipping fee, but DHL's terrible service was unexplainable and inexcusable. This transaction has raised my opinion of Dell, but lowered my already low opinion of DHL. Though I would love to give Dell my business in the future, if it means waiting a week for an overnight package to arrive, I would consider shopping elsewhere, at least when I'm in a hurry. Please don't lose me (and others) as a customer because of another company's shoddy service! 51 Comments »

White LED Screen for XPS M1530

XPS products submitted by realskript Jan 19

I commend Dell for listening to the Public and providing better resolution screens for the marvelous M1530.

But it must be noted, that White LED screen is essential.
Brighter, lighter, and more power efficient, make this a must for the M1530.
You've put it on the M1330 from its release, and it is about time for the M1530 to have the same privilege. 2 Comments »

Offer 64-bit Versions of Windows Vista

XPS products submitted by jefisher Jan 14

I have been searching for a new laptop and would like to future-resist the purchase and take full advantage of the 4GB RAM that I would like to include, however the only versions of ANY OS that Dell supports is 32-bit only. Dell needs to offer up the 64-bit versions so that 1/2 the warrenty is not voided when I load the 64-bit version from Microsoft using the same licence (which yes is valid). If MS can offer up these disks, why cant Dell? Support 64-bit Computing now 90% of the computers sold at Dell.com can support it. 21 Comments »

Need Gigabit Ethernet in M1530.

XPS products submitted by hoodedthing 12/06/07

What about Gigabit ethernet...? It's really not new technology, and it's pretty dissappointing not to see it in the m1530. It wouldn't be that hard to implement now.. Just start sticking gigabit ethernet ports in the laptops instead of 10/100.

This kind of thing is pretty easy to do, it's not expensive for you guys, and makes a huge difference in transfer of files for wired internet. Put gigabit ethernet in the 1530. 9 Comments »

Easier way to OPT OUT of Dell selling my private information

Advertising and Marketing submitted by ninefoot3 10/17/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I rec'd a brochure yesterday saying Dell and DFS were going to share my private info with other 3rd party companies for marketing purposes. Well, it said that in about 5,000 words or so. At the end is a box stating that I may opt-out of this by calling the number listed or writing a letter (including certain info) and send it to the listed address.

I chose to use the phone method. After being shoved around to a few people, I finally got someone who could help me 'opt-out'. This involved 'opening a case' as if I had a technical issue with my account.

My IdeaStorm suggestion, hey Dell, make it easier for us to OPT-OUT of your attempts to make money off of my personal information. What's the matter? Didn't make enough money off of my patronage to Dell products and the interest rates charged? Getting an extra $1 for my name, address and age information going to help Michael Dell get a new boat? C'mon!

While I'm disturbed that Dell wanted to sell me out, I'm more disturbed that Dell made it difficult for us to opt-out. A simple URL would have been nice. I know, that would make more people opt-out and Dell would have less names to sell. It's like a mail-in-rebate or the lack of a cancel button in the account information at freecreditreport.com, you HAVE to call, and since that's a pain in the neck, most people will sloth themselves into something they don't really want. 42 Comments »

Dell... Offer Faster RAM!

Sales Strategies submitted by incubus240 Jan 20

Dell needs to offer faster RAM (i.e. If the FSB on the laptop is 800Mhz then match with 800Mhz RAM rather than 667Mhz RAM). I always have to buy the minimum amount of RAM for the system and end up throwing it away. They charge me $350 for 2GB of 667Mhz then I turn around and purchase 4GB of 800Mhz for $130. Since they make you buy at least 2GB... it is such a waiste! 7 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.
