Live update of drivers

Service and Support submitted by lingle Jul 18

Sir!

May I draw your attention to your competitor MSI:s website. (http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloadindex)

They offer something called "Live Update Online", this offers me an opportunity to download a service (ActiveX) that goes through my computer. This service then offers me an installation or upgrade of all my drivers including the network driver :-). Directly over internet. Maybe this is something for you?

With regards

Vostro Online Support

Service and Support, Vostro products submitted by g4vco Jul 18

Hey - here's a great idea!!
For all users of your Vostro range of laptops - and you must have sold thousands...
How about offering some online support?
Currently, Vostro users have to pay a telephone charge for technical support - how poor is that??? 2 Comments »

Battery Bay Cover for laptops

Laptop Power submitted by kyles Jul 18

Keeping a li-ion battery charged, or charging all the time isn't good!
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
Unfortunately, when my D830 is plugged into a wall socket (80% of the time), I can't just take the battery out because not only dose it expose the battery pins to the elements, but the battery also holds a corner rubber foot that if removed makes the laptop wobble on a flat surface. If Dell supplied a battery bay cover, or even a gutted battery shell, customers could then remove there batteries while plugged into a wall outlet so that they don't compromise the life of the battery. 3 Comments »

Dell and AMD

Desktops and Laptops submitted by maxius Jul 18

I find it very disheartening that consumer AMD based systems and laptops are not offered by dell at all. I do understand that you need to keep intel happy and amd is not the best performer at this time. Though I believe that is about to change when AMD finally releases its 45nm generation products. Till then I would be happy to see a DELL or XPS or Alienware Laptop based on the new PUMA Platform that was showcased at Computex with all the platform features supported the mobile 3800 series, Hybrid Crossfire X and the XGP port Comment »

Bring back the Insprion 1420N (again)!

Inspiron products, Linux submitted by zmjjmz Jul 18

Well, after the announcement on Engadget that 8.04 was going on the Dellbuntus, I found some text that confused me.
I quote, from Engadget:
<quote>pre-installed option on the XPS M1330N, Inspiron 1525N and Inspiron 530N</quote>
So I went to the Dell site and sure enough, the 1420N isn't there.
So could you _please_ either let us have the 1420N with 7.10 or just be more transparent about why it doesn't work? (Assuming that's the reason for dropping it; it stopped working.) 10 Comments »

Non-Glare High Resolution LED Displays

Monitors and Displays, XPS products, Vostro products submitted by anonym Jul 18

Please stop the glossy display nonsence and provide a non-glare display options for all models. If possible with LED backlight, because it is brighter, thinner and less power consuming. I like the XPS M1330 very much, but the glossy display is a real show stopper...

Btw, the glossy finish of the Vostro 1310 case also seems quite pointless to me. 17 Comments »

National Call Centers [and other Service Improvement Ideas]

Service and Support submitted by henrieb 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As a corporate customer I like Dell's products and my USA customer support. I have read the web about all the people that have had problems with Dell customer service and mine and others are not isolated incidences. If you want people to be loyal take a hint from the corporate sales and give Home users even a little customer support. My corporate help does not read scripts, they have the power to take ownership and fix the problem. Granted I do buy Gold support. If Dell thinks it saves money for bad support; I have personally talked 20 or 30 people out of buying a Dell.

* Addition: After reading several of the comments on this topic it appears that what we really want is someone in customer support that will listen to us, and hopefully help us. Culture and language barriers just make this harder. Maybe a better way to track customer performance would be to find out if they really helped someone and not how fast they can end the call. Dell management needs to start taking ownership of this problem. Maybe Dell management needs to start calling Dell support with fake problems and see it the system they created can help them, it sure does not work for us.

Laptops power

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by y_eilom Jul 18

As D630 user, I find my self use the laptop as desktop for days (when I'm not on the roads).
I think it'll be nice Dell will give us the option to connect/disconnect battery from power without taking the battery out.
By that, we can extend battery life. 1 Comment »

Concerning Microsoft's New Policy of “Vista ONLY”

Operating Systems submitted by freedom_man Jul 19

Within the last few weeks , I heard a radio news broadcast that said that from now on Microsoft will be shipping ONLY Vista to computer makers and that Microsoft will also no longer be selling Windows XP at retail.

While many of us are saddened at this, I have a suggestion.

Discontinue Windows XP, yes, but do so only in the 32-bit versions and make Windows XP Pro available in the 64-bit version as an alternative to Vista.

In my opinion, this would be a real win-win for all parties.

What do you think? 51 Comments »

Quad core processors in laptops

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by dellrox Jul 19

I think that putting the quad cores in a laoptop would be great for Dell. You would revolutionize the lapto sales, as you would be the first to do it. Desktops have htem and they will be mainstream very shortly. Why not make them in laptops? Please look into this. 10 Comments »

Give all N models the same hardware customization options as the identical non-N options

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by laptoplinux Jul 19

Why is it that the hardware customization options on N models are not identical to the non-N models. For example, the Inspiron 530 and the 530N. The 530 has an option for a wireless internet card. The 530N does not. There are other discrepancies between what is offered on the 530 and what is no offered on the 530N. These are the exact same machines. Same case. Same processor options. Same memory options. Same hard drive options. Yet somethings are left out of the 530N. Why is it this way? Why can they be just as easily on the 530N as well? Don't they come of the same or similar enough assembly line? 4 Comments »

Offer a Ubuntu based tablet PC

Linux, Laptops submitted by mgrunde Jul 19

I recently purchased an HP tx2500z tablet PC, and I love it. Unfortunately, Vista was the only OS option, and by removing it, I would void my warranty, according to HP. I removed it anyway, and installed Ubuntu on it right away, but not without many problems. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=845911

I hate HP, from their over packaging (see http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/07/18/32-pages-of-paper-in-17-box...) to their horrible customer service (When I requested a refund for Vista, as described in the Vista EULA, my HP case manager Kenneth became extremely angry with me and told me I had voided my warranty by removing Vista).

I never wanted to purchase this tablet from HP, but they were selling exactly what I needed for a reasonable price (1050 USD for Turion x2 2.4GHz, 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD 3200 graphics, etc.) I would gladly pay more for a Dell system with Ubuntu preinstalled. Just take a look at what you can do with a touchscreen and compiz:

What do you say Dell? How about a Puma based, Ubuntu running, tablet PC? 12 Comments »

Good ideas get lost in the mad rush:

Environment, IdeaStorm submitted by robertandy1980 Jul 19

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10088348/Use_Electronic_Paper_Screen_fo...

See this is such a good business idea from a user marvin from India. And this idea is not visible to the dell community just because there is so much crowd talkin about many things.... The development out of this idea could reduce cutting of trees, agony to human eyes, longevity to laptop users, light-weightness and so many good things to dell both on business n environment front...

I guess this community needs to devise a better way of handlin mad rush...:( 1 Comment »

Ubuntu on Studio Notebooks

Linux, Laptops submitted by joshhendo Jul 3

The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.

This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).

This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 13 Comments »

De-segregate Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by penguinsa Jul 4

In my searches of laptops, under "Home & Home Office", I couldn't find any 15.4 inch WUXGA (1920x1200) machines. I foolishly concluded they didn't exist-

BUT THEY DO. They're segregated under "Small Business" but they exist- The Latitude D830, The Vostro 1510...

WHY? If I'm looking for a 15.4" laptop, why is a WUXGA "good enough" for Small Business, but "not good enough" for home users?
When I do a search on 15.4" screens- one of YOUR default Web searches- why are the Business machines excluded?

Are the Home Users simply expected to "Get to the back of the bus" ? How do you justify the segregatiion ? 11 Comments »

Make it easier to clean the Fans on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by pwl2706 Jul 10

It is very difficult to clean the fans on laptops...and the more dust that builds up over time increases the heat inside.

There should be either a way to open a couple of screws then pull or slide out the Fans so they can be 'hoovered' or cleaned with compressed air, or a software to make the Fan run in reverse mode that might clean it... 11 Comments »

When you ask for suggestions try responding to them

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jul 3

This Idea is 2 fold.

First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?

Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.
