Include Ubuntu as option for the Vostro line Linux, Small Business, Vostro products submitted by jgjones 12/18/07
The Vostro line is a popular choice for small businesses because of its very very low cost (I use this for the business that I work for for example, and it's a small but rapidly growing business). Dell should follow the 'spirit of Ubuntu' for its Ubuntu systems! Linux submitted by limulus 12/19/07
Let Us Build A PC Without Microsoft Works or Office! Software submitted by aikiwolfie 12/22/07
Dell I have absolutely no need for Microsoft Works 8.0. Especially on a PC designed for multimedia entertainment! Please give me the option of having a PC without any office software at all. Give users the option of making Firefox the default browser when they turn on for the first time Software submitted by goldspeaker 12/23/07
When I first buy a new Dell I want to turn it on for the first time and, after I've finished installing Windows, I want a window to pop up asking me which browser to make the default. Both Firefox and IE would already be on there and this single window would come up and give me enough information to make an informed decision as to whether I want to use the open source Firefox or the intergrated Internet Explorer. That way even the most novice of user can say that they have personally chosen to use their browser. Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS. Put Ubuntu on a laptop with better specs Inspiron products, Linux submitted by piratehead 10/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Offer an Ubuntu laptop (Inspirion or otherwise) with available discreet graphics, discreet audio, 8GB or more of RAM, a quad-core processor, bluetooth, next-gen WiFi, and integrated webcam. Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**
There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available. Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has. Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500". Provide A List Of Desktop and Laptop systems Ubuntu is known to work with. Dell Web Site, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by aikiwolfie 12/09/07
This idea is pretty simple. Dell should post a list of systems Ubuntu is know to work with. I've said my self often enough Ubuntu works fine on XPS 700s. matt_d has it on a M1330. What other systems are there that Ubuntu works with? Partner with Micron to create a RAM module style SSD New Product Ideas, Servers and Storage submitted by jervis961 12/07/07
Provide XP Recovery CD's for Vista customers like Lenovo/IBM do. Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 12/07/07
This great idea stolen straight from one of your competitors. Have a Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Microsoft Windows Ultimate system, but need to continue using Microsoft Windows XP for a while? For a limited time Lenovo is providing Windows XP Recovery CD media as a way to downgrade from Windows Vista.4 Comments » Identify Hardware with native Linux support Linux submitted by waterguy1960 12/07/07 Please identify hardware choices that offer native linux support in the "build yours" options. And provide hardware choices that allow for a configuration that is entirely compatible with linux. This would be much more convenient that a list of linux supported hardware somewhere else on the website. If a computer model cannot be configured with native linux support, say so on the "build yours" page. I don't need or want Dell to install Ubuntu (or any other linux distribution) on a computer for me ... I just need to know that the computer I'm buying supports linux natively. The notebook computer my employer provided me works perfectly with linux. Unfortunately, despite much research before my purchase, not all the hardware on my Dell notebook provides native linux support. I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines. Linux Hardware Compatibility List Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**
Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives... Dell: Support Open BIOSes for Linux Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 10/10/07 **REVIEWED**
An Open BIOS for Linux would free it from the DOS legacy code and speed boot times. Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by xivulon 09/26/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
There are several proposals that basically ask the same thing: SHOW UBUNTU IN THE LIST OF OPERATING SYSTEM ON ALL MACHINES [subtract $50]. And why not, add XP to the list as well. There are also many more proposals that would be made redundant IF the above was implemented. If you add them all together that is probably the most requested feature at the moment. Yes I think many of the ideas below can be merged. Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com) Ubuntu on all models where it works Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server. Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now! track my votes
