On the US DELL website, you can see the preliminary Date shipment, depending of the options you have choosen. In Europe, it's impossible to see this information.
I bought a 15" Studio laptop and was unable to order WITHOUT the McAfee $79 per year four year subscription. The first thing I do is uninstall. I would prefer to use Windows Defender. 6 Comments »
First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?
Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.
Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".
The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.
This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).
This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 13 Comments »
I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.
I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available. This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as: - Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections! - Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls - Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others &nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM] - PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program - Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing - Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player - Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell. 575 Comments »
Linux submitted by gergnz
02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!! Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.
It is very difficult to clean the fans on laptops...and the more dust that builds up over time increases the heat inside.
There should be either a way to open a couple of screws then pull or slide out the Fans so they can be 'hoovered' or cleaned with compressed air, or a software to make the Fan run in reverse mode that might clean it... 12 Comments »
Please replace all faulty Nvidia Laptop GPUs. Instead of releasing half baked Bios update to constantly run our laptop funs and drain batter power, please own up to your mistakes and replace these faulty Laptop GPUs!
I think it would be nice if DELL designed (DELL branded) a high quality "gaming" mouse pad that came standard on all XPS GAMING Desktops and the "obvious" XPS GAMING laptops such as the M1730. I think it would be a nice addition to any XPS gaming computer to have a nice looking, high quality gaming mouse pad to go along with the computer you just bought. Im sure this wouldnt be too expensive to design, make sure its useful for gaming, slick fast moving surface, with good size.
I just got my XPS M1730 and was a bit bummed not to get an XPS mouse pad standard with it. 2 Comments »
Today I received an email reply to my request for upgrading the CPU on my XPS720 BIOS A05 to an Intel E8500. The text of the reply " Dell does not offer processor or motherboard upgrdes for discreet items.Dell does not recommend upgrading the processor or motherboard in any given system as the design layout has been customized on all Dell systems and the power of the system may not be suitable for the system.Dell does not recommend that you perform an upgrade of the processor as this might damage the system."
The first rule of gaming PC's THEY MUST BE UPGRADEABLE and that includes Motherboards, CPU's,PSU's!
The second rule of gaming PC's Machine information and software updates such as the recent BIOS A05 must be accompanied by information posts, that tell customers what these updates do!
The third rule of gaming PC's DON'T MISINFORM YOUR CUSTOMERS that bizzare email is gobbledegook, what does the phrase "the power of the system might not be suitable for the system " MEAN!
An XPS buyer is likely to know what is possible. The E8500 is according to Intel's publicity requires both less power and cooling that its predecessors! The A05 BIOS is required and it fit's the 775 socket. SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!
THE KEY TO SUCESS IN GAMING MACHINE SALES IS LIFETIME UPGRADABILITY AND SUPPORT in other words we don't need to buy new cases especially as the XPS720 case is a large BTX or a PSU or Optical drives. We only need to replace what is needed to be replaced and that's new generation CPU's and the occasional Motherboard on socket change and worn out componentary like hard drives/video cards. It's possible to make money selling upgrade componetary (newegg and other sellers do). It's Dell's business model policy that is the problem. 1) Dell needs to ensure on contracing for motherboards that Both NVidia and Intel are going to support them and not produce compatability problems-It's clear there is some problem with component ordering. On new CPU inroduction Motherboard providers need to be required to test New CPU's with boards. Dell should also test new CPU's on Test machines and after CPU's are tested, they can be released as CPU UPGRADES. Dell could email all XPS owners and offer upgrades to Motherboard ,CPU and other componentry and this could even be carried out by service personel at the customer 's cost (this would also save on warranty claims as a lot of people may replace Graphics cards and CPU's prior to failure in operation). This is far more environmentally accptable than the previous Dell policy of not upgrading thereby forcing customers into buying new machines. Customer may then purchase continually year in and year out rather than a major purchase every 4 years and ongoing service plans could also be sold. By whole of life I mean as long as essential components such as motherboards/fans can effectively modernize the machine around 4-5 years, however if an unexpected development occurs that reneders modernization impossible well so be it. One things for sure CPU's/HardDrives (replaced by Solid state) and better ram are going to lower power requirements. GPU cards will eventually lower power also, when they proceed down the Intel road in chip performance rather than the very low tech and sloppy SLI designed to extract as much money as is possible from customers for too little reliablity and performance. 17 Comments »
On the XPS 1330 laptop.. you have a couple options;
Standard Display with 2.0 Megapixel Webcam [Included in Price] Standard Display with no webcam add $0 Slim and Light White LED Display with VGA Webcam [add $150 or $4/month1] Slim and Light White LED Display with no Webcam add $0
Why not have the option of a Slim and Light White LED Display with 2.0MP Webcam ?? As webcam technology improves, we’ll continue to investigate higher megapixel camera options in future platforms.
I really want to buy an XPS One - especially after checking it out at Best Buy. But a maximum RAM configuration of 2GB just doesn't cut it. I will be waiting to buy it when the 4GB option is available. 4 Comments »
We have been building around the Purely You commercial, and considering the new Dell.com/gaming website and the new gaming forums, how many new customers really know anything about it?
I think we should run a gaming type commercial, similar to the one I helped with last year for the Game Developer Conference(GDC).
Lets show customers who are interested in gaming just how versatile and powerful our XPS Gaming systems are. We have sponsorships with gaming teams which are already recognized in the gaming industry, maybe they could be part of the commercials.
I think this would be a tremendous boost for Dell in entering the gaming industry and advertise first for an OEM company around gaming.
What does everyone think?
Lets get psyched and go after that cool factor for Dell and XPS.
I think Dell should create some wireless speakers. I don't know if there is something like this out there, but Dell could do a pretty good job at making their own, I think.
I am specifically thinking of surround sound systems. Stringing wires around the room can become annoying and it doesn't look very appealing unless you have some way to hide them. But with wireless, it would all go away. This is how I would do it.
There would be a hub, sort of like a wireless router. You could make this a very low intensity signal so that it could broadcast through a room but not make its way through walls. Each speaker would have a small antennae on the back to pick up this faint signal. You could then place these anywhere you want in the room as long as they have line of sight to the central hub which would plug directly into your entertainment system or computer.
You would probably have to find a way to make several different sound channels. I am not a sound technician, but people have made different sound channels come through different speakers before. It should be able to be duplicated with wireless. 4 Comments »
This is something every gamer wants and needs: something to tell Him / Her when the system is getting hot. Ive seen them sold seperatly, but they take up an entire drive bay. If Dell could make one that is small and takes up some useless area of space, then you would no longer have crashes / lags due to heat. This would be even more usefull if you could have them in laptops, due to the fact that they dont have the best cooling system. 4 Comments »
