Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Hybrid laptops without external display!

Laptops submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

Have laptops that dont have a built in display. Why you may ask?If you want a desktop computer, and the space saving and fewer cords with battery running options well than you have what I call a desktop cross-over!This would have alot of space, make the laptop at least $900 cheaper since it doesnt have a built in lcd and it wouldnt heat up so much.A bonus would be the option of using a solid state drive for even more power saving, less noise,67% less heat, and 5400MB transfer rate v.s. the average 600mb for a 5400RPM HDD that can break down after time! 3 Comments »

EASIEST COMPUTER FOR SENIORS

Desktops and Laptops submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

DELL SHOULD PROMOTE DESKTOPS OR LAPTOPS TARGETED FOR SENIORS THAT NEVER USED A COMPUTER BEFORE.HAVE A TOTALLY NEW AND INNOVATIVE OPERATING SYSTEM WITH JUST A MENU SCREEN AND CLOCK.NOTHING TOO OVERWHELMING FOR SOMEONE WHO'S NEVER USED ONE BEFORE IN THEIR LIFE. HAVE THE COMPUTER TALK TO THE USER AND SAY "HELLO,WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO TODAY?" AND HAVE THE OPTIONS AS LISTED

1. GO ON THE INTERNET
2. CHECK YOUR EMAIL
3. LOOK AT FAMILY PICTURE
4.CHECK THE CALENDER
5. TODAYS WEATHER & TIME
6. TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER
7. MAGNIFY SCREEN/DE-MAGNIFY SCREEN
8. TURN OFF VOICE PROMPTS
9. LISTEN TO THE RADIO
10.LISTEN TO MUSIC

EVEN DESIGN A KEYBOARD AROUND THIS CONCEPT WITH HOTKEYS THAT STATE THE SAME OPTIONS AS ON THE SCREEN. HAVE ONE CLICK OPTIONS TOO, AND EVEN A TOUCH SCREEN IF THEY WISH. SENIORS ARE MORE WORRIED ABOUT USING ONE, OR THEY SAY ITS JUST TOO CONFUSING FOR THEM. WHY NOT MAKE A COMPUTER FOR THEM SINCE TODAYS WORLD REQUIRED JUST ANYONE TO USE A PC. EVEN HAVE A MOCK PANAL OF SENIORS USE ONE, AND IF THEY BUY ONE, HAVE A DELL CERTIFIED TECH INSTALL IT FOR THEM,AND SHOW THEM WHAT TO DO SINCE THEY MAY NOT HAVE ANYONE TO HELP.THEY'D PAY THE MONEY IF THEY LIKED IT ENOUGH, AND HAVE SOME ENJOYMENTS TOO. 31 Comments »

Making sense with financing

Desktops and Laptops submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

I have a Dell Inspiron Notebook, been approved, and still paying for it. I literally have excellent credit with Dell Financial and never missed a payment. I’d love to add more products to the same account as my laptop but Dell says “no, you need to do another credit application”. I am thinking “OK, I been told I have perfect credit, and I can’t add anything to my account because I need to reapply for credit?” Well I guess that makes sense to limit the revenues Dell could make by annoying their loyal customers but ok. So I tried and Dell said “Due to your credit history of inquiries, we cannot process your account. Well you guys didn’t mind processing me a laptop a year ago, so why not allow people in good standing to add onto their Dell account if its good? I think that’s not too much to ask for, and I bet a lot of Dell customers like me would 100% agree on this commonsense request =o) 1 Comment »

convertable laptop keyboard,interchanable monitors

Laptops submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

Have dell keyboards the ability to pop out,and use it like an external keyboard via bluetooth,or even corded with a slit incase you dont need the internal monitor on.This would give more freedom to the laptop, and make it more unique. Also have the option for the laptop monitor to be taken off,and swapped with a high resolution monitor or replacement monitor that you can do yourself. All you'd need is something that clips on,and secures itself with a few screws. This would make life alot easier for people who have an unfortunate accident and don't want the hassle of getting a whole new one,but new a certain part.most of the time the monitor and keyboard can go before antything else at times.makes life easier for us all Comment »

Get rid of BIOS, use EFI

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by joeaguy 02/19/07

Why are PC makers so slow to swith from BIOS to EFI? Apple did it with their Intel macs, and there are tons of reports that Windows runs faster on a Mac under BootCamp than with equivalent PC hardware. There is something to be said for their simpler EFI based hardware architecture helping speed. If Microsoft is the big hold up here, surely PC makers can put some pressure on. The PC needs to shed all of the old tech that is still in the spec. 36 Comments »

HHO Fuel Cell ... Develop One Please!

Environment, New Product Ideas submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 22

HHO fuel cells are the future. Unless you have been living in a cave in Afghanistan you will have noticed YouTube is full of videos demonstrating this technology. Now choosing to avoid the nutters that are more likely to blow themselves and you along with them to kingdom come, I've choose a slightly more reputable video to get the message across.

So how green are Dells green credentials? Do you have the bottle to get really serious about green IT technologies? 26 Comments »

Give Open Source Software a Higher profile On Dell.com

Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 22 **REVIEWED**

From InformationWeek.com : Open Source Quality Improving, But Development Assumptions Need Revising

This report confirms what open source supporters have known all along. Open source developers deliver very high quality code. As such Dell should be giving the open source developers it uses a higher profile on Dell.com instead of hiding them away in some dark recess out of the way!

At the very least give your own in-house open source developers more exposure! They deserve it after all the top quality code they've produced, tested and tweaked.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jun 17

Dell is going to start charging customers up to $50 to downgrade thier systems operating system from Vista to XP after Wednesday. While some people see XP as an upgrade, I don't think there should be a charge for it. 43 Comments »

OSX like Lunix bsaed OS

Operating Systems submitted by kingnewby Jun 2

Windows Vista has been the greatest thing that has ever happened to Apple. The Apple OS is sleek and actually quite robust for what it is, and what is it but a BSD shell with a GUI and a few copyrighted mods. Apple is first and formost a hardware company. As a whole the population in general hates Microsoft, so why not take the Apple IS and use it as non- microsoft alternative. There is a whole underground community doing it already, so why not get together with Apple and work it out. It works great, and If I can hack it and make it work on my laptop that now quad boots with XP, Vista, OSX, and redhat, a couple of multi billion dollar companies should be more than capable. 10 Comments »

Idea for more visible windows using 'depth'

Desktops, Operating Systems submitted by grannybuttons Jun 15

I'd like to see an OS desktop which uses sharpness/fuzziness to increase the sense of depth.

The idea is that while a window on top is perfectly sharp, the further 'behind' it is in the 'Z-order' (i.e. further down), the fuzzier/ more blurred it gets. ~

This would immediately allow people to see which was the window which currently had our focus.

The Desktop, being right at the bottom, would be very fuzzy. But it would come into focus once clicked on.

Why has no one thought of this before?

I wanted to pitch this to Microsoft, but they have nothing like Dell's Idea Storm, so you can have it for free. I don't want money, I simply want a more usable OS. 6 Comments »

Monochrome mode display for laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by viat0r Jun 15

It would be great to have a dual mode laptop display that had a monochrome mode.
What good is having wifi or a 3g mobile broadband card when you can not read your display outdoors. It could be similar to what the OLPC project uses on their device.
Specs for it are here
http://laptop.org/laptop/hardware/specs.shtml
and here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLPC_XO-1#Display

This should also reduce energy consumption and increase battery life! 6 Comments »

Customize Ubuntu for Dell

Linux submitted by zmjjmz Jun 15

Seeing as Ubuntu is open source and you can edit the kernel, it would be great if Dell customized it to better fit their computers, much like the way Apple customized DarwinBSD. (Ok, not _that_ much, but you get the idea.)
Some ideas for it: Customized look (GTK2+ theme, Emerald theme, wallpaper, GDM theme, etc.) to fit Dell products (You could use the GDM theme from here: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Dell+XPS+GDM+Theme?content=78092 for the M1330n and use the underlying wallpaper too), customized kernel (this will help speed it up) per machine, customized applications, you could even eschew GNOME and use a highly customized E17 or FVWM setup, and so on.
It ends where your imagination ends (and budget).
One important part: Every modification you make must be Open Source!
While it'd be great to have the integration that Apple has, it'd also be great _not_ to have the same lockin and proprietariness of Apple. 7 Comments »

Laptop Hard Drive slide out (removable) tray

Laptops submitted by toyota_supra Jun 15

I would really like to see some sort of a slide out tray with a hard drive. It would be so convenient to slide in a hard drive with different operating system (XP, Vista, Linux), without going through the hustle of multi boot, confusing partitioning and last but not least, in case of a hard drive failure (even on multi boot systems) there would a quick and easy way to get up and running on a previously set up operating system(s).

I know that some 17 inch laptops offer optional second hard drive, but this idea is for a removable HD on any size laptop.

Regards,
T.S. 4 Comments »
