Used Machines for Students

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by dgillam Mar 15

I read a blog here somewhere in which the person made a great suggestion. Letting DELL owners get a $100 trade in value on their old machines to purchase new DELL machines. The blogger suggested the old machines be donated to overseas. I have a better idea. Resell the cleaned machines to American junior and senior high school students for $100. This will not only encourage DELL users to remain DELL users. It also encourages new customers as the students come to like DELL machines and tend to have brand loyalty. DELL could dedicate an entire online site to official used machines for students in much the same way Toyota has certified used previously owned vehicles. DELL could even offer affordable upgrade packages to go with the certified used machines.

As a highschool Algebra teacher, I enjoy giving my students access to on-line support and homework help. The students who are able to take advantage of this are making great strides. Unfortunately, many of my students cannot pay even $500 for a machine. They could scrape together $100 and the monthly service fee though. 20 Comments »

Built in/ Express card GPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by visiocloud 10/07/07

I love having GPS on my computer but it would be nice not to have to deal with all the wire, I think an express card or an internal gps option would be awesome. 29 Comments »

Smartbay option on your future notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 27

Smartbays are a fantastic idea and are already implemented on alienwares m15x. They can act as an extra hard drive or solid state drive or better still, a extra battery. They are a great multi-functioncal bay for larger peripherals and would fit perfectly in your future 15" and 17" notebooks. 4 Comments »

DO something about the "click click" noise of laptop hard drives!!!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by cestuila Mar 30

Hi,

Please Mr head of Dell Support, could you really do something about this noise?
I have it on my D630. But I know people have it on their XPS M1530, on their Inspiron 9400, and other brands have the same problem
( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=100609 )

No, this is not the hard drive indexing files. This is a specific horrible noise, a "click" that pops out once in a while, probably due to the HDD heads parking themselves.

Dell has already sent me another hard drive (Samsung 120GB hybrid in my case) but this hasn't changed anything.

Don't know if the problem comes from MS Windows, the hard drive's firmware or the Sata controller in Dell notebooks, but PLEASE do something!!! 54 Comments »

Rip off the UK

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by d3fcon Mar 31

Dell,

Can you explain why you charge £855 for a 64GB SSD hard drive upgrade in the UK ...when its at $655 on the USA site. That equates to approx $1700 thats almost 3 times the cost. I understand there are shipping costs, taxes etc... but 3 times the cost thats laughable ....any explanation??? 7 Comments »

Merged ideas should redirect to the ideas into which they were merged!

IdeaStorm submitted by winoffice Mar 23

Currently if I post an idea and it gets merged, I usually have no idea what idea it got merged into. What if someone follows a link to an idea of mine, only to see "Article not found" because it was merged? People should be able to know whether the idea was just deleted or merged instead, and if so into what idea. Also I might want to check if my idea was really a duplicate of the idea into which it got merged, or if not, which might mean that I might repost it.

At the very least revise the "Article not found" for such ideas to "Article was a duplicate of (such and such idea; do not forget to provide the link) and thus was merged into it." 2 Comments »

Highlight Words Dell Doesn't Like!

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie Mar 17

For whatever reason Dell has taken it upon it's self to include unoffensive every day words in it's naughty words list. As I don't find these words offensive I'm often left bewildered and bemused as to which word it is that Dell are taking offense to.

To minimize frustration please highlight the "offensive" word or phrase when a post is rejected. 19 Comments »

Proper/decent Bios for flagship XPS 720 desktop (e.g. A06)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, XPS products submitted by huggy_bear Mar 19

Plz provide a proper/decent Bios to the XPS 720.
Latest revision (A05) apparently fixes some of the issues reported by customers but there are many more remaining, e.g.:
1) official/proper support for Quad-core Penryn-family CPUs (i.e. Yorkfield Q9450, Q9550 and QX9650).
2) proper support for EPP SLI memory (e.g. reportedly only a few brands/models currently supported...).
3) overclocking options in the Bios to let "advanced users" tweak the FSB, memory clock ratio, voltages, etc... 14 Comments »

Explaine why Dell recommends Windows Vista® ?

Dell Web Site, Education, Operating Systems submitted by yesmathew Mar 12

I saw many idea related to "Dell recommends Windows". Here is one more. Based on Home user or Business user, Dell website recommends either Vista® Home Premium or Vista® Business. Explain why?

So the idea is to educate user, why Dell recommends Windows Vista? Is there any page explaining why Dell recommends Windows Vista? hyper linked to heading "Dell recommends Windows Vista®".

Otherwise does not make any sense to just display "Dell recommends Windows Vista"! 30 Comments »

Improve the web configuration - recommend based on what parts I desire

Dell, Dell Web Site submitted by clohman Mar 11

The Dell Web Site is frustrating. I have a few very specific components in mind that I want in a computer, but the web site makes it difficult to find what I want.

I would like to see a configurator added to the website that allows me to choose components, and then tells me which systems can include those components.

For example:
I tell it that I want:
A dual core processor between 2.8 and 3.2
4 gigs of ram
an nVidia gfx card with 512 ram
a 10k rpm sata drive

The site responds with: The following systems can be configured to contain your desired components:

Optiplex xxx
Precision xxx
Inspiron xxx 6 Comments »

Put your (*very* nice) Precision Linux desktops on your http://dell.com/open page

Dell, Linux submitted by jmxz Mar 11

Few people are aware that Dell sells some *extremely* nice Dell Linux desktops. However when someone searches for Dell Linux systems they most often run across http://dell.com/open which only has a single weak desktop that would barely be capable of running many modern applications well.

Dell - you already do offer excellent Linux desktops (shown on that link above).

Please add those to http://dell.com/open so people can find them. 10 Comments »

Give us the option of a glossy or a non-glossy screen on ALL desktop monitors REGARDLESS of color

Monitors and Displays submitted by winoffice Mar 13

I have checked the Dell Web site and I have seen in most cases (on desktop monitors) that the black screens have non-glossy screens and that the silver screens have glossy screens. And why is that Dell? What if I want a non-glossy screen on a silver monitor, or a glossy screen on a black monitor? Please give us the option of a glossy (TrueLife) or a non-glossy (anti-glare) screen on ALL desktop monitors REGARDLESS of whether it is silver or black.

And now BEFORE those of you who hate glossy screens demote this, please notice that I am asking for nothing other than the OPTION, so that you could always opt out if that was what you wanted. 3 Comments »

Fix the M1330 Defects

XPS products, Laptops submitted by hoodedthing Mar 18

Okay, I just bought this great XPS m1330, but it's literally falling apart. The top left hinge cover fell off, because it can't clip in because it's not the right size to begin with, or the frame is shifted too far right to begin with (factory defect, nothing is broken on the part). The plate that covers the two headphone jacks and the microphone jack also fell off, I guess it wasn't glued on well enough. I'm not real upset about this, but it's pretty pathetic when my state of the art flagship laptop has pieces FALLING OFF of it. I fixed both instances with some superglue, and they're as good as new now, but tweak the assembly line for the m1330 or something so that this doesn't keep happening.

Here are pictures of the hinge cover:http://www.freewebs.com/iacobus/xps1.jpg

http://www.freewebs.com/iacobus/xps2.jpg

Also, it seems that everyone has this problem with the hinge cover, and that it's not just me.

Check laptops before they leave the factory!

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by cestuila Mar 16

I understand, one thing is making it as cheap as possible to produce and sell the laptops. But checking them (this requires a human being, yes) before they leave the factory takes maybe 30 seconds per laptop!

You are just losing so much money for having to take back defective laptops from unsatisfied customers. Some of them dare to order another one, hoping it will not have the same defects, but many just go to their local retailer, where they can see the laptop and be sure that it will not have:
- a back light that makes the bottom of your screen bright, and the top of your screen dark
- bumps in the plastic
- scratches in the plastic
- pieces of plastic not holding tight as they should
- etc.

Just have a look at your laptops before you box them, and you will have much less laptops returned.

PS: this idea mainly concerns the Limerick and Lodz factories. I am not able of judging if other factories across the world have the same rate of faults... 8 Comments »

Use better LCD panels in laptops.

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by mlazarov Feb 26

In order for laptops to be a viable platform for graphical applications, the color reproduction and viewing angles of their displays must be addressed. Most laptops use TN/CCFL displays that suffer from poor color range and color shift. Dell should at very least offer an S-IPS/LED display option in their workstation-class laptops. I realize several of Dell's laptops already have LED backlighting, but there would a significant improvement quality if S-IPS panels were used.

Update: I thought it'd be best to illustrate the difference between TN and S-IPS displays. Below is a side-by-side comparison of a TN (left) and S-IPS (right) display from an off-axis vertical angle.

http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/10884.jpg

Having such dramatic color variation at different angles almost precludes any sort of in-field collaborative image editing or similar application. The laptop on the right is a (discontinued) ThinkPad T60p.
