Cell Box

Broadband and Mobility submitted by criehn 02/21/07

My wife and I have Dell Desktops and use dial-up service. The only reason we continue to pay for a local line is for our ISP access. Perhaps there are enough of us to warrent a small cell box to connect to our computers that would use our wireless carrier instead of the local line to access e-mail and internet searches. Our wireless carrier is Sprint. Comment »

Bermuda is not in Latin America!

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by chrisrw 02/17/07

My business and my family have owned Dell Laptops for years. No more, however. When we seek technical help, even when we travel from Bermuda to the US, we are told that we have to contact Dell Latin America where we have to speak to someone whose command of English is never very good. Sorry, Mr Dell, but until you move Bermuda back where it belongs we'll have to find another laptop supplier. Comment »

Parts Inventory management

Service and Support submitted by ffflores 02/17/07

I've tried for the past two months to purchase a replacement screen for a B130 Inspiron laptop. It is clear that the people answering the phone do not have access to accurate information regarding parts availability -- in this case the fact that the part is not in stock. What a waste of their time and mine to be told it is in stock, place an order and learn otherwise again and again. Dell needs to keep accurate inventory information for replacement parts. Comment »

Consumer/Low end education device for anywhere/anytime education

Education submitted by derekk2110 02/20/07

Common themes growing amongst larger educators in the public (government) space is the need for "anywhere anytime" education.

This is hampered by the high cost of computing for the masses.

Feedback from many levels is the need for a semi disposable low cost computing device, more like a gameboy than a laptop, that allows basic internet access, some power and limit connectivity . . and is around that low $200-$500 mark.

Possible with current technology? 4 Comments »

no spare parts for older Dell PCs

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by oz42 02/20/07

When I try to get a spare part for my Dimension 3000, I have to learn that there are none. Dell only sells PCs just like every other vendor. Service and support could be much better. Comment »

Cross-Reference for Old and New Part Numbers

Service and Support submitted by tuxedo512 02/20/07

Having been a long time customer of Dell Computers, I have requested numerous times that Dell have a cross-reference table available on the Support Site that will allow look-up of new replacement part numbers based on old numbers. This would definitely cut down on calls to tech support. Comment »

VMWare Installed w/Multiple Operating Systems

Operating Systems submitted by acklein 02/23/07

I would love to have VMWare automatically installed on new PCs. It allows an incredible amount of flexibility. In addition, I would love to have a preconfigured setup including both Windows and LInux. Comment »

No Charge

Service and Support submitted by driverjoe 02/22/07

Tech Support should be free of charge and for as long as you own the PC. Also any software that is installed by dell should be covered. Now I would pay EXTRA for faster and in UNITED STATES Support!!! No reading from menu as to see if you caused the problem " JUST FIX IT ". Comment »

I'm still hurt after all these years!

Service and Support submitted by bobpay 02/17/07

We never DID receive a reply from Dell on this letter we sent out regarding the LAST computer we purchased from Dell....and a relationship that ended badly:

Re: Dell Financial Service Acct 001-421685-001

Dear Sir:

We leased a Dell Dimension H266 in August of 1997 on a three year lease. In going over some paperwork I found that we were still paying on the lease that should have been terminated in August of 2000, and was told that we had an obligation to notify Dell 90 days prior to the lease termination of our intentions otherwise it would automatically renew. We were in the middle of processing an early retirement, which included a complex sale of a business due to corporate restructuring, and your lease fell through the cracks. When I called and asked that the lease be cancelled and a refund sent for the period after the 36 month lease was over I was told that was not possible.

I checked out the lease paperwork and legally she was correct. There is very fine print that is not readable without a magnifying glass that does state the 90 day notification. My concern is this. Over the years we have leased cars, copiers, computers, and other high end items. Never once has a lessor not notified us in any way at the end of the lease term of the options, or at least given a friendly reminder that the lease was coming up and decisions had to be made. When we chose Dell for our office PC, it was because we felt Dell would not only provide a quality piece of hardware, but would treat us ethically….that they would be there after the sale and treat us in an honest manner. I do not feel as if we have been treated honestly, or fairly and I'm very saddened by this. Our intent was to lease the machine for the three years and then exercise the purchase option which was 10% of the acquisition cost. That is what I should have paid Dell for the machine….the three year lease amount plus the 10% at lease end.

We are stockholders of Dell Computer Corporation, and we have referred several friends and associates to Dell. Your most recent sale from our direct recommendation was a high end machine to a Mr. David Hadley of Guilford CT. Prior to that you sold a nice PC to Joanne Quarz of Groton CT. These people purchased machines from you based on our assurance they would be treated fairly, and also receive a high quality piece of hardware.

I never expected that Dell Computer Corporation would violate our trust. In these difficult times is it too much to hope that our leading corporations do the right thing, not what they can legally get away with?

We're very disappointed.

when calling into tech support, I could use my home phone number as uniique identifier

Service and Support submitted by howardnyc 02/17/07

background: no one memorizes their account number, their computer's serial number, et al; people are way to allow the use of their social security number (SSN), but there is a better way to allow us to quickly identify ourselves... each USA phone number is unique... especially when you consider using your clients' home phone number...

suggest: I call tech support, the automated voice asks for my home phone number ("...and press the pund key when done"), and I am asked to confirm that my last name starts with "Z-Z-Z" 2 Comments »

Support and Promote Honest Ebay Sellers Instead of Stamping on Them Like Trash

Dell submitted by ebaynoob 02/17/07

Ebay is a very important sales channel for consumer electronics. Dell has adopted a uniformly adversarial relationship with resellers of its products through this channel. Rather than a sheep-dip bullying approach Dell should support honest resellers of its products through this important channel. Ebay sellers could serve as vital channel partners. Same can be said about other independent channels as well, of course. 1 Comment »

Printer Cartridges

Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies submitted by burkem 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I own a very nice Dell all-in-one that works fine. But it goes through printer cartridges like no tomorrow. Why can't Dell provide bigger/fuller/better cartridges, and why can I buy them only from Dell? I feel like I have a Barbie doll for a printer--initial acquisition cost low, but buying the dresses has been very expensive. Why can't Dell, which set the standard in home use years ago (I am on my fifth home Dell), set the standrd for printers? 4 Comments »

"White List" software security package

Operating Systems, Software submitted by nathan.bockrath 02/23/07

I would like to see the OS use a "white list" to permit software programs or applets to run, rather than the current blacklist approach. This would prevent the accursed malware from ever running in the first place. Comment »

give specifications and choose

Sales Strategies submitted by alequint 02/23/07

Wouldn't it be great if you could just give some specifications you want your computer to have and let Dell figure out which computers match the terms and give you a choice out of 3 or 4 computers. Then you can choose the pc that matches your needs or wallet. Comment »

Give Dell employees better discounts so they can experience the customer experience

Dell submitted by pwalker 02/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell employees tell me they don't get discounts on Dell products. It's time to give Dell employees good discounts so they will more frequently experience your customer experience. This is important. I believe motivating them to be Dell customers more frequently will generate a lot of ideas for improving dell.com, products and services.

We did update our Employee Purchase Program in November.

Increase customization to hit the sweet spot with the geek community

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mathoda 02/16/07

The geek community craves easily customizable computers, both in terms of the hardware and software. Their choices of hardware and software become reflective of their identity, in a way it isn't for non geek consumers. Apple laptops, while beautiful, aren't very customizable. To reach the geek community, Dell should aim to support the standards that the geekiest consumers prefer, such as an easy to choose from several different operating systems (ubuntu linux, other distributions of linux, bsd, vista, etc), several different choices of applications, etc. Dell should also let you customize more of your component choices for the hardware. While Dell may fear the customer support required for such customization, the geek community more than other communities is probably willing to have customer support open sourced (the way support for linux is supported by geek message boards) rather than be the traditional handholding required for mainstream customers. 5 Comments »

give the possibility to choose the OS

Operating Systems submitted by nicolagiacobbe 02/19/07

Simply let the user choose what he wants. I had to put down many Dell offers for not having the possibility to avoid the Windows tax. A pre-installed Linux distro could be OK but the most freedom is to let the user choose which OS wants on his PC (if any). 6 Comments »

A single DVD that will install correct drivers on any model of Dell PC

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by danwarne 02/18/07

I've just posted an opinion editorial about this at APCMag.com -- http://apcmag.com/node/5359. Seems to me that a largely overlooked feature of Apple Boot Camp is the driver CD that will install drivers onto any model of Intel Mac with no searching/downloading required by the user. This could be a 'Dell crushing feature' unless Dell comes up with something similar. It has to be this easy: one click, and all drivers for that machine are identified and installed. And the CD or DVD image has to be downloadable. 18 Comments »

Fed up with Microsoft

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by triangle 02/19/07

Each week I receive in my mailbox promotionnal offers from Dell.
Our company have only needs in laptops but we never bought a Dell because were are SMB company needing no-OS pre-installed because we run NOVELL-SuSe.

So the day each people could buy a laptop "nacked" I will change my opinion and have a look on Dell products for office and for personal home use.

My proposal is to deliver pre-installed Windows if it cost something to Dell more to nack computers and simply disagree with the EULA. Dell have no need to provides activation codes and the consumer will be happy to have the choice.

When you read Wall Street journal you can see that Microsoft course decrease since they published security updates for the most secure OS of the planet. Not very credible...we prefer running Gnu/Linux that is really more secure because they are no needs to buy additional stuffs like antivirus, antispyware, firewall...and office suite :
all come inside.

It is very curious that a world leader in computing does not see the needs of his customers : now you have to think in many ways : Microsoft, Linux and why not tomorrow Macos on regular PCs (the install protection was already hacked).

In other way it is incredible that Vista could be sold with DRM inside, reducing video quality when not drmized and many other tricks allowing the computer to do what it wants and not what wanted by his owner....simply crazy. 1 Comment »
