Support Options for Deaf or Hard of Hearing

As someone who is slowly loosing my hearing, I am finding the telephone to be a frustrating option when it comes to getting support. I would like to see support options that allowed me to report a problem and interact with support personnel without needing to make a telephone call. 1 Comment »

Show recent Moderator Updates on main page.

I love to see what's new and up-coming from IdeaStorm, so I'm often checking the Moderator Update tab (it's kinda greyish and hard to find, but it's up near the top).

I'd like to see some sort of note on the main page to the effect of:
"5/11/2007 - New Moderator Update! - See what we're working on now..."

It wouldn't have to be big, just eye-catching enough to let us know that there's new info there. I like seeing how our ideas are being considered and put into action, and I think others would too. 2 Comments »

Idea Timeline or Idea Duration till Processed (aka Life Cycle)

Ideas on IdeaStorm should have a Time Line or Life Cycle.

Ideas need to be given time to mature and be voted upon but also have a time line so if it is not voted on or demoted past a certain number it should be removed or moved to a death (or purgatory) category where it will be left to die or be reprocessed by the Idea creator and allowed to improve the idea or mark it to be deleted.

Time line, demote number, reprocessing, should be determine by Dell or IdeaStorm Admins. The rest of you give me some good numbers, I have some but feel we need feedback before setting some numbers and time line. Comment »

I think you will get better interaction on this site if you somehow thread or group your ideas (like the categories already set up) and then moderate and "seed" them with questions to get people focused on the topics that you are most interested in receiving feedback on.

Demote an Idea should require a Comment

Ability to delete your own comments please!

Please have a delete comment feature on IdeaStorm. The merges have created comments in unwanted places. In addition, people somtimes change their ideas with the edit button making comments un-needed or no longer relevant.

Blanking and changing the comment does not solve the issue- it leaves new comments appearing in "Latest community activity on items [user] is involved in ".

If no delete ability is going to be added, perhaps have a way to get out of unwanted articles appearing in "Latest community activity on items [user] is involved in ". 53 Comments »

Find out who wants what?

In order to keep track of who wants what, why don't you just ask 2-3 simple questions to people before they post ideas or vote. Find out about age and computer usage pattern. Then you can segment groups accordingly.

In my view that would make efforts like ideastorm more efficient. Comment »

Add a World Map in Idestorm

Add a World map to show at overall as well as individual story level, mapping the contributors, it'll be interesting to see trends from various parts of the world.

This is wide open to abuse. A more simplified system of BBCode or something similar should be used instead.
Right now we only limit certain HTML tags that have potential security implications.

Refresh Top Ideas Daily or Weekly

I really like Ideastorm and I'd like to see it become an important part of Dell's business for a long time. However, the ideas that are currently on the homepage have been there pretty much since the site launched, consequently it's impossible for any new idea to promoted up to the homepage and new ideas should be what Ideastorm is all about.

I propose instead of the homepage displaying the ideas with the most votes ever, it should display the ideas that received the most votes that day or week. That will ensure that the ideas on the homepage are always fresh.Not refreshing the top ideas on IdeaStorm basically defeats the whole purpose of the site.

Seeing the same ideas on the homepage for so long makes the site seem dead, and it also deters people from submitting and voting for new ideas because nothing going to touch the current leaders. 8 Comments »

Need Some Way to Uniquely Identify Posts

Maybe a number that uniquely identifies an idea posted. It's too hard to find the idea we are working on if we leave the site, and then come back later with a better idea or comment.

IdeaStorm and Balanced Opinion

Don't just listen to the geeks who have time to sit around on IdeaStorm all day every day waiting for you start distributing preinstalled Linux. IdeaStorm is a terribly unbalanced idea really. Get out there and find out what your average customers wants.

Force category select!

Even if it is the "Other" category. This concept is good however many users are forgetting to select a category, so DELL related items get placed under both Dell and the Ideastorm category. You really need to force people to select a category. Comment »

Option to exclude gray/voted articles from lists.

An option to exclude articles that a user already voted on when bringing up a list in IdeaStorm. For example- to be able to bring up "popular ideas" list without any 'grey' vote articles appearing. 39 Comments »

To counteract the sheep herd instinct, do not display the total scores for each idea.





Instead, display the list of ideas, ordered by the total score, divided by the amoun of time that the idea has been posted or the number of times that it has been viewed.

The current listing by score does not work. The high scores are limited to the first few ideas that were posted when IdeaStorm was brand new. Because so many ideas have been posted, new ideas get lost in the clutter, and are not viewed often enough for their scores to be elevated to a significant value. 2 Comments »
