Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 248 Comments »

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Use "Dell Support Center" to inform you of Driver updates for your service tag.

Service and Support, Software submitted by thundergrey Apr 1

make use of dell dupport center for something. its useless bloatware as it stands. it would be nice to get a message sent to it to let me know that there is a new BIOS update, or wireless card driver. 5 Comments »

Make all notebooks' warranty global

Service and Support, Laptops submitted by painterhenry 04/28/07

Notebooks are meant to travel around, not just within a country but also globally. I propose each and every single Dell notebook should carry international warranty.

This has little practical impact to business travelers who usually stay in another country for too short a time to utilize the international warranty for repair and service. But this means a lot for students (especially those in college) who are going to study overseas or for immigrants who are moving to another country. 4 Comments »

Provide a Dell Update function on the Dell support site

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by scotty 02/26/07

Provide a Dell Update function on the Dell support site.

Updating Dell-specific system files on Dell computers is ridiculous. The way the updates are classified, you need to browse each category, click each update and read each description in order to even just see the date and version - so that you can decide if you need each. Then for each, you must either remember whether or not you have it already, or you must look through the computer's updates to see if it's already there.

There should be a website function (a la Windows update) or a universal updater application that you can download and run (one that would work with ALL Dell models - not one for each model). Either way, you should be presented with which ones are important, which are optional, which are already installed, and when they were posted/installed/etc. And then the download and install can be managed by the app as well. Again, like la Windows Update.

This should be made available to all owners of any dell computers - not only to enterprise or large businesses. 23 Comments »

Automatic Dell Update Notifications.

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by davidshq 02/16/07

It would be really nice if Dell had an automatic update program for servers, desktops, and notebooks. It should be highly configurable but notify a user when a new firmware or driver upgrade was available. This would help users keep their systems patched. How many grandmas and grandpas are going to go looking for new drivers or firmware for their SATA hard drive? 11 Comments »

Windows Product Key Tags

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by jkuper Apr 9

Dell needs to bring back the laminated Windows Product Key Tags. They've gone away from them and it's not working out at all. We have a a number of Optiplex 745 pc's at the office with the new non laminated style that are already starting to lose their product key stickers after just 6 months. The old laminated style was much much better. Thank you. 2 Comments »

XPS products submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **REVIEWED**

On the XPS 1330 laptop.. you have a couple options;

Standard Display with 2.0 Megapixel Webcam [Included in Price]
Standard Display with no webcam add $0
Slim and Light White LED Display with VGA Webcam [add $150 or $4/month1]
Slim and Light White LED Display with no Webcam add $0

Why not have the option of a Slim and Light White LED Display with 2.0MP Webcam ??

As webcam technology improves, we’ll continue to investigate higher megapixel camera options in future platforms.

XPS ONE UPGRRADE

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by mike2912 May 2

I want a 1900x1200 24 inch screen. What is the point of blue ray if you can't watch it on a full HD screen. I would also like 45 nm intel processors. 2 Comments »

More RAM on the XPS One

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by chrishedlund Feb 24

I really want to buy an XPS One - especially after checking it out at Best Buy. But a maximum RAM configuration of 2GB just doesn't cut it. I will be waiting to buy it when the 4GB option is available. 4 Comments »

[XPS M1330] The Nvidia 8400 GS runs to hot!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by abgar Mar 19

The XPS M1330 is potentially a great notebook. But the heatpipe and the whole heatsinksystem is not solved well. The graphic-card runs to hot. The result: the fan is constantly running. This is unnecessary. The problem deters many potential customers - and even costumers who already own the 1330.

CPU, GPU and Northbridge are sharing one heatpipe although enough place for a better solution exists. The connections 'chips-to-heatpipe' were also insufficient. A lot of unnecessary problems. You could fix it - and you will get satisfied xustomers and therefore a better publicity.

You could fix for example the 2D-Desktop-Mode and the 3D-Low-Power-Mode by using lower voltages. Its only a little manipulation of the graphic bios. A better heatpipesolution is also thinkable. Unfortunately, no solution for the customers who already own the device.

Please - think about it. I like my 1330 - but its to hot and to noisy... 11 Comments »

Bluray drive for the XPS M1330

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by jamesweb Feb 19

There used to be an option for a Bluray drive on the XPS M1330 which has since gone missing. Since the format war's as good as over a Bluray option should be becoming standard on all laptops, but starting with the high-end XPS range. 5 Comments »

Blu-Ray cancelled for the M1330?! Say it ain't so!!!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by q0987 Jan 26

If someone from Dell could please tell whether they are still planning on releasing a slot-loading blu-ray drive for the XPS M1330. It has already been implemented into the M1530 - does this mean it is no longer in the works for the 13 inch model? I havn't heard anything since it was released. Please! Someone? Anyone? (Sigh)
You are under my hypnotic suggestion - CLICK PROMOTE! Lol! No really. 9 Comments »

Don't put the Dell logo upside down on the Mini Inspiron

Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 29

I didn't notice this last night as I was checking out the pictures of the new Dell Mini but it was pointed out by JamesWeb on Dell's "yourblog" that the Dell logo is upside down.

Please don't leave the logo like that, it looks bad. 107 Comments »
