The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium. Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Design & Form Factor

This forum is a great idea to get Dell back to #1.
What I like to see is new and innovative styling across the board on notebooks and desktops. Dell's product line looks 5yrs old and needs a total refresh.
As you can see Apple Inc. is winning conumers hearts because Apple owners are actually proud of displaying them in the living rooms instead of hiding them. Get rid of that XPS desktop design that thing is so ugly.. and come up with something consumers would be proud of displying in their media rooms.
Also I would like to see Dell create a sleak new design for a media center box so we can utilize vista home for the entertainment room and display it next to my audio and video units.
Thanks for listening Mr. Dell.

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.
I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available. This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Try to get OSX on Dell machines
Operating Systems submitted by manu08
07/11/07
I know this is a VERY LONG shot but still no harm in posting it up because I'm sure many other people out there might actually agree with this.
Dell should try to partner with Apple to run OSX on Dell machines. Dell might have to come up with a few new machines & make them OSX specific but still, I think it would definitely be a lot better, especially if people wanted OSX but didn't adore the Apple products, or prefererd a different size/type of product that Dell already offered but wanted OSX, right now they'd have no choice but to go with Apple. Also, this would possibly increase Apple's market share for the OS industry thereby making Microsoft worry a little more so that they get up & actually develop OS's the consumers want/need without all the bugs & errors. This would start an actual competition where the industry on the whole would benefit by better & cheaper OS's. Not to mention the gain the consumer will obtain.

ZERO Noise Water Cooling Laptops

Make a cooling system with less decibels than any other Laptop on the market. Use cooling materials, as an option, so customers can choose to pay more for a non noisy laptop.
A cooling system for every part of the laptop, even sharing the weight of the components on the screen side,. imagine a flat battery on the whole LCD screen back, now with that free space on the chassis you can split the harware components so they can breath better, also include a flat gel cooling system, to improve performance, battery life, and reduce the noise as much as possible.

Dissipate heat from the back of the LCD; not the laptop's bottom
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by endolith
06/10/07
The name for these devices has been changed from "laptop" to "notebook", because the bottoms of these things get so hot they slow cook your legs if you try to hold them on your lap. I've been using mine with a big cloth pad underneath since I got it, and it still heats up my legs.
The problem is that the heat is designed to dissipate mostly from the bottom. That's why the modern Dell laptops have little rubber bumper feet, so that, theoretically, you'll use it on a table and the fan will draw air past the bottom surface of the laptop. Back in reality, everyone just uses them on their laps or couches and the little rubber feet break off and get lost.
What you should do instead is route the heat to fins on the back of the LCD, where it will easily be dissipated. (You know, the part that's almost vertical, prone to convection, and always exposed to the environment instead of legs?) The parts that contact the lap should then be thoroughly insulated.
Options for routing the heat into the LCD:
- Actively liquid-cooled laptops with little pumps and such.
- Passive liquid heat pipes using alcohol or other working fluid that condenses in the heatsink, drips back down by gravity into the main body of the laptop, is warmed and evaporated to flow back up and be cooled in the heat sink, etc.
- Active air cooling with the normal laptop fan blowing air into open ducts that go up the LCD housing
- Very passive cooling that just leaves open ducts for air to naturally convect up the LCD housing like a chimney.
For connecting the main body to the LCD: - Rotational coupling built into or coaxial with the LCD's hinges
- Flexible hoses

Notebooks should be more 'portable'
submitted by manu08
07/11/07
Currently, I feel Dell offers the least portable notebooks. The build quality is far inferior when compared to HP, IBM & Apple so it does not explain the sacrifice in portability. This is especially true with the Inspiron series notebooks. I know Dell released new notebooks recently but there is room for a lot more improvement. To start off, Dell needs to make their notebooks more portable, build quality & design can be worked on slowly. These are the kind of notebooks I have in mind: A 17" notebook should be about 6 - 9 lbs. (1.3" - 1.65" thick) A 15" notebook should be about 5 - 6 lbs. (1" - 1.4" thick) A 14" notebook should be about 4 - 5 lbs. (0.9" - 1.2" thick) A 13" notebook should be about <4lbs>t feel all that awful.

Configurable LCD for the xps model
Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by kalamos
07/03/07
I'd like to see more options for the type of LCD that are selectable with the xps line. Let me be more specific. I ordered an XPS1210 last year that shipped with an LCD that was sourced from Toshiba. After doing a little research I found out that there were 3 vendors who produced this LCD, toshiba, AUO, and Samsung(I think). The best of these three screens was the AUO and the worst of course was the one built into my laptop, the Toshiba, so I had to get tech support to ship me out a replacement LCD for my working Toshiba in the hope that I would get a AUO, return the Tohsiba and paid the restocking fee. It would have been nice to be able to select the AUO before the system shipped and just paid the extra fee. Now, I don't want to be that specific, but I do want to be able to at least chose between: 1. LED/Backlight 2. High Resolution(1920x1080 or better on 17') 3. Standard 4. Glossy Like the new Apple Pro notebooks.

Totally silent notebook

Think of a notebook that would never fire up its blower. My dream. Thinking about it, I have come up with two ideas. A black metallic body on the base of the laptop and round up between the screen and the keyboard or, perhaps not feasible, but not necessarily, the back of the screen, properly modified (possibly featuring a striated aluminum decorative pattern) could play that role, especially with the energy-efficient new processors. Of course, such a design cannot control the energy transfer, but come to think of the position and the surface. Nor need it to be excessively heavy to make the machine easy to topple over either. Also, given the price of flash today, it would be nice to have flash installed and recognised by the OS as hard drive, which it can use instead of the noisy hard drive for system and programme temporary storage. I believe that could well be a 8-12 GB drive. Then I will arrange a morgage with my banker to buy one.

The more solid keyboard.

I'd like to see a different keyboard design where the keys can not be accidentally bumped off by an infant. Having the keys come up from a solid plate, and having a stop/guard so that it would not be possible to pull the keys off without breaking the plastic.

XPS M1330 with Gigabit Ethernet
Broadband and Mobility, XPS products, Laptops submitted by macavity
07/11/07
I think it would be really good for the M1330 to have Gigabit networking for various reasons.
- if you want to move or back up your music or some videos across your home network you actually need that speed
- most other similar laptops have it. I thought it's standard now and hardwired into every board?
- gigabit home routers are on the market
- I don't want to buy a product and be behind the market right from day-1.
I bought an Inspiron 4 years ago with only 10Mbps 802.11b wifi and regretted it already 6 months into the purchase.

Improve Latitude LCD displays
Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by froejoe
07/17/07
We need a D830 with:
- LED backlit LCD - 1440 x 900 resolution
The displays on the current D830s are really poor quality. Why do you assume a business notebook doesn't require a decent display?
A jump in resolution from 1280 x 800 to 1680 x 1050 on a 15.4" display is pretty drastic (not to mention going all the way 1920 x 1200). Where is the 1440 x 900 resolution?
Take a look at the 15.4" MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa edition). It's perfect in all respects, but particularly in the LCD display area.
Come on, Dell, you can do it.

06/25/07 **IN PROGRESS**
DELL, where are the original ideas? My brother just bought an Apple Macbook Pro, because he said a Dell with similar specs was too expensive, and Dell does not have an integrated camera onboard for all its products.
And more importantly, where is the cool factor? Dell laptops have no aesthetic style and are nowhere as this compared to an Apple counterpart.
Dell needs to get some industrial designers in-house and start adding some oomph (more capabilities/performance) and pzazz (style) to their products.

Slot Loading Drives
Laptops submitted by drew08867
06/28/07
All dell notebooks should be fitted with slot loading drives similar to the macbook, ps3, and the recently released XPS 1330. They are less prone to damage, slimmer, and all together cooler. It fits with the direction dell is going. The new inspiron line is fantastic! Great job Dell!

Bring the Latitude to the Home/Home Office (Latitude equals Dell style and quality as it SHOULD be!)
Latitude products, Sales Strategies submitted by hotuan87

Compare the touch and feel of a MacBook to that of an Inspiron. It doesn't compare. The Inspiron isn't as stylish, and has a cheap plasticky feel. The MacBooks are solid, sturdy, and, if you have a MacBook PRO, made of metal. For college students such as myself who put our computers through the abuse of daily use, it only gets worse. My Mac colleagues, however, still show off their shiny (literally) only slightly beaten MacBooks.
The Latitude, however, is everything the Inspiron should be in terms of design and style. Don't limit the Latitude to just Business users, get it to your average consumer!
People shouldn't be comparing the look and feel of MacBooks to Inspirons, they should be comparing them to Latitudes!

Improve linux notebook line
Linux, Laptops submitted by della
07/19/07
Hi. I actually use a macbook with Ubuntu Fesisty Fawn on it. I would be *very* pleased to switch to Dell cause: 1. I will not pay for a OS, MacOSX, that I do not use. 2. A Dell with Ubuntu preinstalled works out of the box while the macbook has to be configured and not everything is possible. 3. I would be happy to support a company that has been the first to make a choice that I consider important.
But something retains me to do so: 1. linux dell notebook are not sell outside US 2. dell notebook are ugly to see. Come on guys, a macbook is very beautiful. Is not a matter of "cool" vs "serious", is about "beautiful" and "ugly". We spend a lot of money in technology, we spend the most of our days in front of a notebook, we want that it is powerful and beautiful and comfortable and so on. 3. linux dell notebook linup have poor choice, I need at least a model with a serious graphic card (nvidia or ati) with it's own memory, a integrated camera and such things. I am sure you are already working on this, just my +1 here.
This is my thoughts. I hope I could buy a dell notebook in Europe soon :)

XPS M1330 needs to be more price competitive with Apple Macbook
Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by hephaestus
07/04/07
I was looking over the recently introduced Dell XPS M1330 notebook, which was so clearly introduced to compete with Apple's Macbook, and I noticed there's a significant cost delta for what seems like little difference in offerings. If you compare the base model Macbook at 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, it's $1,174 and a comparably equipped Dell M1330 is $1,474. What's the deal? They don't look much different on paper. Is it Vista driving up the cost? I'd rather have OS X and my $300. Dell needs to be competitive in both product quality and price.

New Mouse Design
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by alokjain
02/19/07
Looking at Mouse design, it does not really match the way our hands are (designed ??). Here is a top view of how a mouse is held:

I think (need to validate this through some more research) that this put strain on the hand because the shape of mouse and hand does not really match as a result the fingers used for clicking mouse buttons have to be held in air until one wants to click, also since hand does not rest as well on the mouse, moving the mouse puts pressure on those areas of palm not resting on mouse's surface and hence puts greater pressure on muscles to control these
. Some recent design changes have tried to handle this:
Large Thumb resting area on the left grooves created for fingers
Here is same concept seen in other products:

Look at the left side of the camera, there is a groove to rest one's index finger.

Same kind of grip in toothbrushes
Taking these concepts deeper into mouse design, here is a radically different design. I must confess that the illustration below does not make this very pretty, but lets focus on the concept for a little bit:
This design focuses on a single click mouse like for a Mac, but same design can easily be extended to two click version. The Top view to the left essentially matches the way we hold the mouse, or shape of a human hand, providing grooves for various fingers and the thumb to rest. The side view does the same thing with the shape of mouse provides grooves for palm and fingers to be rested comfortably.

But what about the differences in sizes of the hand , I envision having different sizes of the mouse just like we have for clothes.. so have XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL etc sizes for the mouse..
