Operating Systems, Servers and Storage submitted by mr_road 02/20/07 Why not ship a range of Free OSs with your servers, Linux, the BSD family, BeOS. These could be shipped on the HDD as live images and if you wanted to try it just burn it and reboot your live CD. This would show many people that there are more ways than the microsoft way to use your PC. 1 Comment » Gorgeous, beautiful eye-popping design Desktops and Laptops submitted by foobar 02/18/07
Dell needs to aggressively move away from being perceived as cheap and boring. Corrall all the confusing sub-brands into a cohesive approach that shows us a new, fresh approach to design. There is no reason on Earth why Dell has to have worse design than SONY or Apple. Indeed with your new hires, this needs to be the target. There needs to be a "Dell look" that is not "gray, dull, box" Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07
It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self. Pre-Installed Gimp Photo Manipulation Software Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kyle.burton 02/20/07 Include a pre-installed copy of the open source Image Manipulation software: Gimp with windows based installs. In addition to open-office, a photo manipulation package like this would be a useful add on. Including picasa or other on-line image organization applications would be useful as well. 3 Comments » Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by rmartin 02/17/07 Need to add Mac OSX. Esp good idea when bundled with Parallels software so you could run Windows and linux at the same time. v10.5 will be out soon that makes it an ever better idea. 136 Comments » Service and Support submitted by xhotardx 02/24/07 How about auctually including real install cd's for the original OS. So when you have to reimage I dont have to spend 2 hours uninstalling stuff that I dont want. Why can these not be provided for free? If a consumer is paying for a license there is no reason that you cant front the 4 cents and give them a copy of that software (even microsoft is cool with that). 10 Comments » Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by dinogen 02/20/07
Make 3 Dell - Kubuntu versions: Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by gpd 02/20/07 Could be great to have a dual boot OS, like Windows XP and Ubuntu. With a partition for shared data. It's not easy to do it on your own. 39 Comments » Linux with Corporate Support (Mandriva Linux) Linux, Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by odiseo70 02/20/07 I've seen many interesting topics about dell machines running free linux. But I think that a major linux distribution end user oriented like mandriva linux will be great for dell pcs and laptops. It's great because Mandriva has a very interesting costumer support infrastructure and it is one of the more easy to use distros I've seen. 5 Comments » Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rudy 02/20/07
hallo from germany, Mr. Dell should appear on your blog more often Dell Community submitted by pwalker 01/31/07 He's a leader in business and the industry and your customers want to hear more directly from him. They know he can't do it every day. Once or twice a month would be a step in the right direction. A video would be great. 4 Comments » Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by oposit 02/21/07
I think dell computers with Linux or without OS is a good idea, but the potential for a hit resides in Linux with Beryl. Dell executives cold miss a great oportunity if they didn't realize the sales that can be made only on Beryl eyecandy (or enhanced productivity, if you are business minded). Pre-install Linux with option of licensed codecs Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dominicwise 02/20/07
Provide customers with the option to have Linux pre-installed as an alterrnative to Windows when purchasing a PC or laptop. As there are a huge number of Linux distributions available it might be sensible to offer from a few of the most popular ones e.g. Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Fedora which can be freely distributed at no cost. This would provide a competitive advantage as with zero licensing fees lower prices could be offered to customers. Built-in mic should work with Linux Linux, XPS products submitted by adnan_wasim 02/20/07
I've had problem getting the built-in mic, such as the one on an XPS M1210 to work in Linux. This makes VOIP on Linux not possible. This needs to be fixed! Promote IdeaStorm/Dell Blog/Studio Dell on homepage! Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by explorer5 02/18/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Dell should put links (or even those nice looking graphics at the top of all the ideastorm webpages) on the homepage, or even on most pages within the dell.com site. Stop using Microsoft and Intel as crutches Dell submitted by ronsemail 02/17/07 Try innovating without Microsoft or Intel as your R&D lab. Go hire and staff a kick butt set of designers and engineers and pay them the better than anyone else. In fact pay all of your staff better than anyone else, in 3 years you will be the best brand in the business. Try spending some of your customers money on product development instead of putting it your bank account. 4 Comments » Linux, Operating Systems submitted by lenny 02/20/07 I will probably buy a Notebook this year - I guess this Spring - and I would prefer NOT to get Vista on that Notebook. I think, XP Pro does the Work just rigth and I am not the slighest interested in getting Vista with that Notebook, just to make M$ and/or Dell satisfied. Comment » Desktops, Linux submitted by richlake1951 02/20/07 I would love to see Dell sell a fully configured Linux desktop. One similar to the Xandros 4 OS. A multimedia power house loaded with the most popular opens source software, K3b, Amarok, Banshee, Open Office, GIMP, Kaudiocreator, etc. Also I would like the PC itself to be open to all developers, public and private, with full support of Dell and access to the technical knowledge necessary to develop open source drivers and software. 2 Comments » Desktops and Laptops submitted by shanx24 02/17/07 If Dell wants to regain relevance with its target audience, it should seriously hire a couple of leading designers and make machines that don't look like poor man's tin clunkers. Yes, even that 'luxury' line of machines you've started look hideous. Take inspiration from Vaio SZ or the small full-black Fujitsu or just about anything from Apple. I used to be an avid Dell evangelist for nearly 5 years, until it became to make less and less sense to me (even your 'international support' was useless. It does NOT work). 3 Comments » Linux Preinstalado en DELL España submitted by irio 02/20/07
