Notebook Power Supply

Laptop Power submitted by rogercollings 02/20/07

Incorporate the power supply in the notebook so that when you take your notebook to a meeting, for example, you just have to unwind the power supply cord and plug in rather than having to mess with a separate power supply and its two cables. Maybe the power supply cord could be retractable. 1 Comment »

Dell Inspiron 9300 pro glare screen

Inspiron products submitted by jdurban 02/20/07

I wrote a review on the inspiron 9300 on CNET a year ago regarding the LCD monitor used in this model. As an electro-optics expert designing and manufacturing dozens of laboratory grade instruments that measure and monitor the quality films and coatings used in anti-reflectance applications I was shocked by counterintuitive Inspiron.

Unlike every other laptop or desk monitor I have ever seen the Inspiron for some unknown reason is pro-glare and anti-glare! One would hope this was a fluke and some kind of vendor Q.C. misfire but I think it was actually by intent. I don’t recall the actual reflectivity but it was in the order of 80-90% !

Besides the obvious intent of anti-glare / anti-reflection coated display overlays there is another key benefit, transmission. For every 1 percent of reduction of liht reflection there is a 1 percent gain in light transmission. Therefore the Inspiron LCD reflection not only suffers greatly in well lit environments but it wastes energy by attenuating up to 20% of the CCFL backlighting lamps.

coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

No OS Preloaded

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by agreer 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.

Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.
