Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!

Dell: Create the first True Laptop (aka notebook, portable) Computer.

Dell get out of the Desktop thinking box and step into the True "Laptop" world.
Create a laptop with no connections/ports other than power!
You have:
Wireless Ethernet (802.11) so no need for an Ethernet Port AND Broadband access (left that out originally, for those in remote areas)
Wireless USB so no need for USB ports
BlueTooth so no need for phone jacks
A true Laptop can use these features to accomplish their tasks just fine, for a true Laptop! At the moment Dell is still thinking within the confining space of a laptop that acts like a Desktop, well they are not equal. Yes some customers still feel the need for the crutch of the old ways of doing things but its 2008! Move on to the future and design the "No Ports", "No Dongle", yet self contained Laptop!
You can drop the DVD player as well, its a Laptop not a TV or movie player. Look at the other small video devices, they don't include a DVD player (aka iPod, iPhone).
Moving to this new paradigm will move Dell to the forefront of the computer world, its not just a laptop its a self contained entity! Its so rock solid it needs no extra junk to function! Of course you need to make it with a way to re-install via wireless Ethernet or Wireless USB but it can be done.
This alone would move you to cult status in the Computer World! Apple would be left crying in a corner somewhere. Mikey! Get on the ball!
Almost forgot, make it with both the Windows OS and Ubuntu or OpenSource OS as an option (the OS's are the option not OpenSource) so you can't release it till both are working.
Addendum: Also only include SSD long term memory devices, for the OS and local configuration data
Also, this is where Dell services like the DataSafe Backup play an important roll!

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.
In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."
When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.
How did we ever get glossy screens?
Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare."

No more plastic wrap, please

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.
