IdeaStorm: Aggghhh! It looks like Symantec! What were you thinking! (on the new look)

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 11/20/07

Did you hire the symantec web designer?

And where's my Social Media Category!

Almost forgot, the idea is to not use the new look, or at the very least give me the option of turning the Mustard off.

Come on Dell, Mustard is not a Dell color, totally disassociates IdeaStorm from Dell, besides the rest of the theme is typical Dell, so you're not fooling anyone. Blue links, Blue names, Blue Dell Logo, just put the blue back, you had your fun.

The rest of the page theme/stylesheet is still the old one, come one, you just switched a few button colors added a new logo image and removed some links at the top, cheap! 62 Comments »

Better define the Dell-assigned tags.

IdeaStorm submitted by winoffice 11/22/07

cosh included the following list of Dell-assigned tags in his idea concerning browsing based on those tags, and badblood suggested that Dell define **COMING SOON** in terms of "how long we need to hold our breath".

- Acknowledged
- Already Offered
- Coming Soon
- Fixed
- Implemented
- In Progress
- Not Likely
- Not Now
- Under Review (formerly, Under Consideration)
- Partially Implemented

I suggest that in addition to **COMING SOON**, Dell define what these tags mean in that sense.

**IN PROGRESS** and **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED** - I am placing them in the same paragraph because I do not know the difference between them - how long do we have to wait before they become completely implemented?

**NOT NOW** - then when? When will Dell decide that now is the time for the idea to have a different statuis tag?

**UNDER REVIEW** - when will Dell cease to review the idea and move it further up?

I also suggest that Dell explain to us the difference between **IN PROGRESS** and **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED** - I currently have no idea what the difference is.

And for the sake of completedness I decided to mention again the request of badblood for Dell to define **COMING SOON** - how long is soon, and when will the idea have finally come and been implemented instead of "coming soon"?

I also suggest that on the About page that Dell give complete definitions for all of the status tags in case a new user comes up and has no idea what these status tags mean. Comment »

Make buying DELL products easier in India

submitted by prachideshmukh 11/22/07

Dell is losing out on a lot of business by not marketing their products properly in India. When I bought my notebook I was looking for DELL, but I could only buy it online, since Dell does not distribute through vendors. So I ended up buying another brand. Comment »

XPS One Recomendations

XPS products submitted by justinr 11/23/07

I've read several of the XPS One reviews and watched a few of the video reviews and there are two things that bug me. One of which will cause me to consider the Sony Vaio LT instead of the One.

1) The thing that really gets me going is the lack of a VESA mount on the XPS One. For a Secondary media center (my primary is a 42 inch Plasma), I would expect to be able to mount this on a wall or a motorized VESA mount in my bedroom. The Vaio LT has this feature.

2) Not a huge, "I'm leaving" type of issue, but I would hope that Dell is considering 22/24+ inch screens as well. Perhaps more room created by a larger screen will allow a VESA mount. 1 Comment »

Oil Cooled PCs

Desktops and Laptops submitted by aikiwolfie 11/24/07

While Dell has been busy patting it's self on the back for the XPS 720 H2C the rest of the world has begun to move on. Oil filled computers are what people are talking about now. These PCs are cooled with vegetable oil which is non-conductive unlike water so it doesn't short out the PC. The oil also fills the entire case meaning the whole PC is cooled.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Michael Dell, shut down Dell and give money back to shareholders...

Dell submitted by mugunth 10/29/07

If Dell does not like(or know) to innovate..., atleast copy Apple... Build an iMac.
A desktop PC that is clutter-free, cable-free, wifi enabled, built in webcam, slot loading dual layer dvd drive and mainly, no trialware/malware or junkware...
If you can't... Michael Dell, shut down Dell and give money back to shareholders...
Ten years has changed a lot...
http://www.news.com/Dell-Apple-should-close-shop/2100-1001_3-203937.html
If you can't compete with a company that you would have shut it down..., accept your defeat... or build us a iMac... with either Windows Vista or Ubuntu...

Please do not make the XPS M1530 look like this!

XPS products, Simplify IT submitted by winoffice 10/09/07

Take a look at these pictures of the Dell XPS M1530.

After the XPS M1730, this is probably the ugliest Dell notebook that I have seen. What is especially ugly is the white keyboard, the small hole on the top inside of the lid, the protruding "key" below the down key, and the black Dell circular logo. I am praying to God that the XPS M1530 will not look like this.

  1. Make it look more like the XPS M1710 or better still the Inspiron XPS Generation 2 on the inside. At least make the keyboard black instead of white.
  2. On the outside of the lid, you can keep the background black, but make the Dell circular logo silver instead of black.
  3. Also, please remove the small hole on the top inside of the lid. If it is a web camera/PC video camera, then make it optional.
  4. Remove the protruding "key" from below the down key.

Outsourcing, Philippines is the way to go!

submitted by daryldeal 11/11/07

Hey Dell, im just wondering when are you guys gonna expand your customer and tech support services in the Philippines? i mean, to say it frankly, i'd rather talk to a neutral accent'd filipino that would work with you to resolve a problem than a thick indian accent'd Indian that would speak like a machine gun that would rush the resolution in your concern. 13 Comments »

Linux Customer Survey

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by aikiwolfie 11/12/07

I've noticed Dell likes it's on-line surveys. So why hasn't one been done for Linux? If it has can we see the results?

Conduct an on-line survey of customers asking them if they have;

1 ) Heard of Linux?

2 ) Used Linux in the past?

3 ) Intend to use Linux in the future?

4 ) Currently use Linux?

5 ) What are/were the systems specs of the PC Linux was installed on?

6 ) Which distributions have they used?

7 ) Which distribution do they prefer?

8 ) Why did they stop using Linux?

9 ) What problems have they encountered using Linux?

10 ) If they haven't heard of Linux, what do they think Linux is?

11 ) Do they want to buy Dell PCs with Linux installed?

12 ) List the applications you use the most on Linux.

13 ) Are there any applications you would like moved to the Linux platform that are not currently offered on Linux.

14 ) Is there any particular piece of hardware you'd like to see supported in Linux?

15 ) Would you like to see better hardware virtualization support, better bleeding edge support and better thread handling (processors are hardware too) 96 Comments »

Allow Third Party Power Adapters

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by zcrane 11/12/07

Currently Dell won’t allow a user to charge their batteries with a third party charger, such as a Targus Universal Power Adapter. Dell has some sort of a power adapter identifier that will only allow you to *power* the notebook, but not *charge* the batteries with the said charger.

This is a horrible case of forcing customers into purchasing the Dell branded power adapter, even if a different company produces one that fits the user's needs better. This is like saying only a Dell branded mouse will work with a Dell notebook... ridiculous!

Dell, this needs to be changed, and changed soon. 22 Comments »
