I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle. Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now! Linux submitted by cosh 03/30/07 **COMING SOON**
And for comparison, the disadvantages of Windows
Linux is not the be-all and the end-all, but it is growing faster, much faster, than Windows. The Linux community can scale ten times the number of developers that Windows can. Arguably, it's set to soon be superior to Windows in virtually every respect. Dual-booting options with Windows and Linux give maximum choice to the user. This option is a must for Dell computers. Microsoft's vendor-lock-in contracts which force PC retailers to support and "recommend" only Windows are unethical and we don't like them. It's gone on for too long. Let's be honest Dell, ask yourself, what are Microsoft so afraid of? Will they lose money through dual booting both Windows and Linux? No not if Windows was the better OS... So is Microsoft quietly admitting to it... Come on Dell, we all want you to show the world how much more a computer can be! We want you to show the world what a computer is meant to be, and marvel at people's suprise and delight! Giving your customers choice can only be a good thing. Don't ignore this chance to become the open source pioneer. Might I suggest that promotion is vital. Linux computers will not sell well if they are hidden in some back-alley part of your website. To get the best results for the work you put in, make sure people can see it and that it is well-described, so people who've never heard of it don't get confused. Make sure that you make these computers available to markets outside America too. Don't ignore us here in Europe! The European Commission's had quite enough of Windows anyway, after fining Microsoft €497 million ($603 million USD) for anti-competitive behavior. Another idea, to iron out compatibility problems and get interesting extra feedback, beta-test some of your new Linux range with a large-ish selection of people before making it fully available. Unlike with Windows, you have full options to customise the style, background and layout and almost complete behavior of the OS. You might want to put your own touches on it. For example the default installation of Ubuntu is a light-brown/orange colour, which lacks much universal appeal. Test to see whether people want something layed out similarly to Windows or just barebones Linux defaults for the particular distro(s). (I personally would like something similar to Windows' look.) Open the window. Linux is ready for Dell, and Dell is ready for Linux. We appreciate the promises you've made already Dell. Thank you. We're all behind you and look forward to the results. 52 Comments » "Help Me Choose" is often inaccurate Dell Web Site submitted by davhef 02/17/07 **COMING SOON** Very often the "Help Me Choose" feature does not include the actual items available for that system. Fix it! 10 Comments » Sell more desktops without monitors, keyboards, etc Desktops, Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by gordonbrown77 02/16/07 **COMING SOON** Make it an option to not get things people may already have when upgrading a PC such as monitors, mouse, keyboard. This would be good environmentally and save people some money if they already have theae things and will not be keeping the old PC. 34 Comments » Advertising and Marketing, Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by thebittersea 02/18/07 **COMING SOON**
User Based Customer Support & Community Knowledge. Top quality contributors should also have a reward system through Dell. Larger version of studio hybrid with SLI gaming capabilities. Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by kld3 Jul 30 Ok, I love the look of the studio hybrid but the specs are disappointing. Why not create a larger version with SLI gaming capabilities, dual slot loading blu-ray drives and everything else included in the XPS line. And PLEASE keep the interchangeable colored sleeves and add LED lighted side panels! 4 Comments » put new Centrino 2 chips on the new studios Desktops and Laptops submitted by yardsale Jun 26 New NVIDIA Geforce GTX 200 GPUs Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by helmecj01 Jun 18
The GeForce GTX 280 GPU has 240 multi-threaded processing cores, and can convert high-quality video more than 18 times faster than the latest CPUs. Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07
Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use. Add "Narrow Your Selection" choice for laptop screen finish Dell Web Site submitted by blomster Jun 26
Below is the list of choices (with a proposed addition) in the "Narrow Your Selection" feature of Dell's US website for laptop / notebook computers. It's getting increasingly hard to find notebooks without glossy screens on Dell's website. Please add a choice for glossy/matte finish, as shown below. Laptops submitted by brokencrystal Jun 29 Make use of the LCD back-light on Dell notebooks by allowing some of the light to escape out of the back (cover) through the Dell logo causing it to light up bright white. You could make it light up any color to match the notebooks color scheme by using filters (different color plastic) while designing the covers. For example: You purchase a red notebook, you have the option of a white, red, blue color light on your Dell logo. You could also save $15.00 by selecting no light in the logo. While this is mostly for cosmetic, advertisement, and branding purposes, the light on the back could indicate that the notebook is turned on, off, or in power save mode from the back of the unit. 10 Comments » Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by atxguy512 Jun 22
With the pending release of the "Studio" Line of Inspiron notebooks, it appears that Dell is looking to take back the notebook market. There are new design features that put the "Studio" notebooks on par with Macbook Pros... slimmer/update design, slot loading DVD +/- RW and/or Blu-ray drive, BACK LIT keyboard, eSATA drives and a host of color options. Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by ccpljat May 6
Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less. Better Graphic Card Options in the new Studio 17 Laptops submitted by steve123 Jun 26
Well the new Dell Studio laptops have been officially released... This was the laptop i was waiting for. Dell needs to listen to customers and stop adding junk like shortcut links to Ebay to desktops. Advertising and Marketing, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jun 18

Laptops have grown to be unuseable comfortably on a lap due to heat, screen position and keyboard ergonomics. I would like to retain the power of current offerings to handle video, computation and average games, but to be light and easily useable without a tray/cooler and to still have a good screen size (say 15" or so). Dell E Slim with NON-glossy panel Monitors and Displays submitted by happymaster23 Jun 15
I have falled in love to new Dell E lineup and Dell E Slim specially. This product looks superb, with no badness, but I found one - this is glossy panel. I hate glossy panels, so Dell please make customization selection between glossy or non-glossy. Another comment from Michael Dell on Ideastorm. IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 30
It's been well over a year since Micheal Dell commented on IdeaStorm. It was nice to see his comments, since that made it look like IdeaStorm was really valued all the way up in Dell. Starbuck's CEO has posted more recently than that on their ideastorm, and some of Dell's competitors are very open in interacting with their users on their blogs many times a month. Thank you to all of our community for your ideas and suggestions! We are listening and learning a great deal and changing our company with your ideas. But for the past year there's no sign that he cares anymore. Just so we know this site still matters to Dell, have Michael Dell come by at least once a year and comment on the ten highest voted ideas so we know the votes mean something too. Even if his only comment is "I can't comment on this one", we'd at least know he's aware of what the top voted ideas are. 8 Comments » track my votes
