Provide ubuntu's next LTS iso, 100% compatible with Dell Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by shaikailash Apr 10 **REVIEWED**
I'ts going to be release the long term support (LTS) version of ubuntu, Hardy Heron 8.04. It will be supported by the community for 3 years. Allow anyone to get any product in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site. Sales Strategies submitted by winoffice May 4
Sometimes Dell posts some products only in certain channels; for example home offices cannot get Vostros. Add higher screen resolution to all home & home office laptops Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ccpljat Apr 25 I have been using a used [another brand's] business laptop that has a high screen resolution. The cheaper Inspiron laptops can only go up to 1280x800. I cannot be productive on a screen that small any more. At least bump it up to 1440x900 or equivalent. I have basically been forced to shop in the Small Business section to find an affordable computer with a higher screen resolution. 10 Comments » Monitors and Displays, Laptop Power submitted by yardsale Jan 16 I dont know why dell hasnt done this yet. switch all monitors on desktops and notebooks to LED. did you know that you can run an LED screen at full brightniess and it uses less power than a LCD monitor at the lowest brighting level?!? its cheaper, its energy efficent, and it needs to be done! promote this, if you demote i wanna know why! 63 Comments » Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon. Setting to Disable Media Direct in BIOS XPS products submitted by steve.bogdanski 09/28/07
Allow users to change/disable the functionality of the Media Direct button on Dell XPS systems. Not only do many busness environments not have any use for this feature. It has now become common place to hear the horror stories of those who have reformatted their harddrives and then have that button accidentally pushed while the computer is off. This immediately thrashes the partition table making the complete system useless until it is rebuilt from scratch. Linux, Printers and Ink, Service and Support submitted by jfelisky 02/21/07
I have a Dell 3100cn laser printer, which was a nice purchase until I dropped Windows XP and moved to OpenSuSE on my home computer. Optional ram configurations (eg 2x1gb or 1x2gb) Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell submitted by theideasman Mar 12 It would be nice if dell offered the choice of different ram configurations depending on wether you plan to buy all the ram now or upgrade it later. At themoment in 2gb confiurations they only offer 2x1gb sticks which is an obvious way of making you have to buy two completely new sticks of ram if you wish to upgrade to 4gb. Cant we have the option of 1x2gb stick instead? 9 Comments » Give us the option of a glossy or a non-glossy screen on ALL desktop monitors REGARDLESS of color Monitors and Displays submitted by winoffice Mar 13
I have checked the Dell Web site and I have seen in most cases (on desktop monitors) that the black screens have non-glossy screens and that the silver screens have glossy screens. And why is that Dell? What if I want a non-glossy screen on a silver monitor, or a glossy screen on a black monitor? Please give us the option of a glossy (TrueLife) or a non-glossy (anti-glare) screen on ALL desktop monitors REGARDLESS of whether it is silver or black. Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14 Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments » Implemented: Ubuntu Dell is Le$$ Than Windows Dell Linux submitted by thebittersea 05/05/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
see comment from Erik down below... [Dell's Pricing Team] Offer Ubuntu on the XPS M1330 laptop Linux, XPS products, Laptops submitted by technikal 06/26/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Offer the coolest OS on your coolest laptop. I'd be great to buy such a cool laptop knowing ubuntu would work flawlessly on it. Maybe even add Beryl into the default install so that the graphics on the screen were as nice to look at as the laptop itself. I'd even take a dual-boot with Vista - just something to assure me that on the system is Linux ready. Add 802.11n wireless option for your Linux offerings. Linux submitted by jmxz 08/15/07
I can't find any of your Linux offerings with a 802.11n offering. Seems most 802.11n chipsets have pretty weak driver support right now; but fundamentally 802.11n does work with Linux (heck, Cisco 802.11n devices are even linux based). Adding 802.11n as an option along - even in a partially working state with a disclaimer that drivers are not stable - would help some linux customers including (a) those people who don't mind helping debugging the driver, and (b) those people willing to use wired networking until the drivers get more mature. "One of the big challenges has been the driver world," Dell said. "Chipset companies and peripheral companies need to develop for Linux. Dell can be a powerful ally. We can say, 'if you want to work for Dell give us drivers with support for Linux.' Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses..
Make memory upgrades EASIER, not more difficult Sales Strategies, Simplify IT, Laptops submitted by nicopoon 08/19/07
I've always been able to upgrade memory myself on notebooks and laptops, but am concerned to see that Dell has made it so much harder to upgrade memory on new notebooks. You apparently now have to take the notebook apart by removing the keyboard to access memory slots. Why make it so hard for your customers, Mr Dell? All I can see is a lot of unneeded support calls and parts failures as a result of this change. Monitors and Displays submitted by drew08867 06/28/07 Dell should transition all monitors to LED back lighting. More cost effective (in terms of energy use), greener, longer life. 11 Comments » Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops. Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied. Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED** I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments » track my votes
