Ubuntu PCs need more video card options

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by nkmhutirv 06/13/07

Dell desktops and notebooks preloaded with Ubuntu should have more video cards to choose from!

I do not know how Nvidia 7300LE compares to other video cards, but I do not belive TurboCache is suitable even for the most casual gaming.TurboCache's memory sharing technology is just not suitable. Yes, I do play 3d accelerated games from time to time on Ubuntu! You could offer some Nvidia 7600, 7800 or some other medium range video card. Nothing fancy, just something to allow some 3d effects.

Even Dell PCs preloaded with FreeDos have 2 video cards to choose from:

128MB ATI Radeon X1300 [Included in Price]

256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro [add $50 or $2/month1]

With Ubuntu PCs you have to choose between a range of just one video card:

correction: you have 2 options:

IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 [Included in Price]

256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache [add $50 or $2/month1]

But what's the difference between them? I want to play games 1-2 years old. I do not belive this will be posible with this kind of cards.

You could say Dell does not address gamers, but Dell's Windows based PCs have a lot more advanced video cards: "Stunning 3D graphics performance with the latest single and dual graphics cards in the market available". Unfortunately such advanced graphics is available only to Vista users, not even XP buyers!

Have you seen the noise (fuzz, amazement) 3d effects in Ubuntu have generated? You see, Ubuntu users appreciate 3d acceleration in Linux. Don't restrict them to just integrated graphics and TurboCache! 5 Comments »

Ubuntu in the UK?

Linux submitted by effdot 08/17/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Are the Ubuntu offerings available in the UK / Europe? I can only find fairly well hidden pages which go to the USA site.

I'd like to stick to Dell (especially for servers) but if it is easier to go elsewhere then I'll have to, especially when Dell start only offering Vista.

Not one of my clients wants to go there - 1 (very non-techy) office is now running Ubuntu server on an old PC as their file server - it's well backed up so if the PC dies <shrug> they restore to another one.

They sometimes even turn on the GUI to use it as an extra workstation and have since switched wholescale to Open Office. They now plan to switch to Ubuntu for their workstations as they need replacing.....

Well, Dell?

Have publicly available torrents/ISOs of all driver and media discs

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by remover 06/15/07 **NOT NOW**

As a former dell technician and now computer repair shop technician, I frequently encounter Dell machines where there driver disc is missing and or out of date. Having worked on the phones I know it's not cheap for Dell to keep these in stock and to keep shipping them out.

My suggestion: use a free peer to peer download system to distribute these discs. BitTorrent. It's free and simple to set up. Along side the torrents you could have ISOs ready for download if the person is unfamiliar with BitTorrent.

While the most common consumer may not be able to utilize it to full effectiveness, it gives local technicians and either knowledgeable users or friends of the less-than-knowledgeable users will have access to the most up to date disk images.

Just my two cents.

Linux Pre-Installed on Business Laptops

Linux submitted by dbyte32 07/02/07

Dell should offer Linux pre-installed on business laptops, not just home laptops.
Dell currently offers Red Hat Enterprise on the Dimension N Series, Optiplex N Series and Dell Precision Workstations for businesses. What's the problem with offering Red Hat Enterprise on the Inspiron, Latitude, Precision Mobile and XPS notebooks? Dell currently has the expertise in house for Red Hat Enterprise since they have been selling it for years. Support can be purchased directly from Red Hat with dell supporting hardware issues.

At the least allow customers to buy the business laptops without windows, so then they have the option of purchasing a copy of Red Hat Enterprise from Red Hat directly and installing it themselves. 6 Comments »

Ubuntu on vostro

Linux, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by tashmooclam 07/21/07

I believe Dell should load ubuntu linux on the vostro laptops for business use.

Linux makes good sense for business. Also, free applications for business like openoffice, etc. make sense for business.

More security in Linux also makes sense for business.

I think business would adopt Linux if Dell provided the equipment loaded with Ubuntu.

I would have bought a pre-loaded ubuntu inspiron laptop, but I don't like glossy screens. 4 Comments »

Show which products can support Ubuntu/Linux

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by tashmooclam 08/02/07

Assuming some people (like me) want to buy another laptop configuration besides the 2 offered with Ubuntu installed by Dell.
Dell should try to at least show which computers/components/configurations might be able to run Ubuntu/Linux.
We all know they can already run Windows. Which ones may not be appropriate for Linux? Some may have components for which drivers are rare or non-existant. 4 Comments »

Dell: Offer OPTIONAL Dual-boot Linux and Windows - on your new Ubuntu systems!

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies submitted by phubert 06/01/07

Other suppliers of primarily LINUX systems (Pogolinux, for example) offer this.

If you wish to compete with existing 2nd tier suppliers who are clearly responding to their own customers' requests, you should offer dual-boot configurations.

Depending on what systems you offer, DEVELOPERS will be among those buying.

Virtualization (along with such as CrossOver Office) is one approach, but dual boot isn't going away yet!

I believe more are likely to try your Linux PC offers if they can have dual-boot as well.

**

Let me suggest XP Pro or a higher-end Vista (since XP won't continue to be _available_ to you TO offer).

**

Since this refers specifically to the new Ubuntu systems, it is not a duplicate suggestion.

Clearly, Dell's latest statements about their directions in support of virtualization could easily make THIS suggestion moot.

I think a round of applause is due Dell for this! 21 Comments »

Get rid of this 'Dell recommends Windows Vista' rubbish from the Linux pages, and preferably altogether.

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by stoodleysnow 08/17/07

To say you're finally supporting linux, this isn't exactly 'whole-hearted' support. I understand Microsoft have you in their pocket, but you could at least allow mentions of Ubuntu on the home page, and have a few less of Windows on the Linux pages.
Please.
And how about advertising your new product range? 8 Comments »

TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 117 Comments »

Fund key Opensource/Linux/Ubuntu developers

Linux submitted by crysalidzzz 08/14/07

Dell,
Back linux/ubuntu by funding the developers who work on key bits of software.

Focus on the sofware which is necessary for the linux/ubuntu experience to be a integrated and userfriendly. As well as appealing to the more tech aware.

Look at how Apple have invested in gcc, webkit and cups.

For this investment Dell could sell alot more hardware. 5 Comments »

Linux box for Australia also

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lieuhon 06/01/07

I really want to see linux box in Australia too. Especially with Ubuntu. I would expect the price significantly lower than a windows box because Ubuntu is completely free. Although price is not the sole reason for people buying linux box but it is for sure that price is an important one. 1 Comment »

Ditch the Windows keys

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by johnnyk 06/11/07

Dell's Ubuntu PCs ship with the Windows logo on the super key.

I've been waiting months for these Ubuntu PCs to become available and just recently spend $1000 on one. The last thing I want to see is the mark of the beast.

Ship all Ubuntu PCs with Linux-friendly super keys (the Ubuntu logo, Tux, or even just a blank key - anything but the Windows logo) and provide replacement keys for anyone who already bought an Ubuntu PC. 26 Comments »

New Dell Retail Store! Death to Mall Kiosks!

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by evilspell 02/16/07

Dell should open a retail store very similar to the Apple store. I know that they have small kiosks inside malls that they try to sell Plasma TV's and a couple laptops next to a guy selling knock off sunglasses and verizon cell phone sales sharks! Very unprofessional. Open a classy Dell Store and offer Tech support right in the store just like the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. 144 Comments »

All operating systems on all platforms!

Operating Systems submitted by markvs624 07/09/07

Do just what the title says: offer all operating systems on all platforms with full support. Don't restrict Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Unbuntu to certain models.

Make the base price for all base operating systems the same: XP Home = Vista Home Basic = Unbuntu. No discounts at the entry level. No $50 cheaper for Unbuntu. No $50 more for Vista.

Give no incentive either way The same customers who buy XP Pro and Vista Ultimate now will still buy those versions in the future. LET THE CUSTOMER DECIDE. 48 Comments »

Include nvidia and ati video cards in ubuntu laptops and desktops

Desktops and Laptops submitted by laptoplinux 08/02/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

When shopping for an Ubuntu Dell, I've noticed that it is not possible to order one with a video card from ATI or NVIDIA. For some users of Linux, such as those into 3D modeling work for artistic or scientific purposes, the Intel video card option may simply not be enough. And with laptops, upgrading or changing the video card is much more of a hassle than with desktops. Therefore, why is the option to buy a laptop with an nvidia or ati card listed under a Vista machine, but not under an identical machine pre-loaded with Linux?

Unfortunately, users that require both Linux and superior 3d acceleration performance may wind up forced into buying a Vista-preloaded Dell (and subsequently tossing the Vista disc in the garbage) just so they can have a Linux box with an ati or nvidia graphics card preinstalled. In addition to adding unnecessary cost to the consumer, this scenario will also distort sales figures information regarding Vista and Ubuntu.

Please consider offering Ubuntu-preloaded Dells with the option of an nvidia and/or ati graphics card preinstalled. Thank you.

Implemented

Make 2010 'The Year of the Linux Desktop'

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by limulus 08/17/07

I've thought about the current desktop OS situation and blogged about some ideas of what the future my hold. By the time 'Windows 7' is currently estimated to ship (we'll see, but assume for a minute that MS can actually reach their goal), Ubuntu will be up to version 10.04, which is expected to be a Long Term Support (LTS) release; high-quality and heavily polished. If Dell decides that they want to become a market leader rather than what they basically are right now, just another OEM on Redmond's leash, they should strive to increase their share of Linux systems sold to the point where its sales of computers preloaded with Ubuntu 10.04 will meet or exceed those of 'Windows 7', in which case 2010 would truly become 'The Year of the Linux Desktop'.

Helping promote and thus sell Linux systems will insulate Dell's profits from bad Windows releases; consider how Acer's president stated that "The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista" and yet there's not much that can be done about that currently other than offer XP and even that won't last past January 2008.

Second, Dell would distinguish itself from other OEMs by leading the pack in terms of Linux offerings. Every big OEM sells Windows systems and there's only so much you can do with desktop and notebook case design, but Dell is the only one right now that offers a real choice of OSs and Ubuntu is arguably better than Windows in several areas.

Third, by cultivating a good relationship with Ubuntu users, Dell is creating happy loyal customers who will likely do repeat business.

2010. We can do it together. 6 Comments »
