There have been a number of ideas for offerings computers with some flavour of Linux preinstalled, and that's great. But, there are customers, who would still want to have benefits of Windows (still the majority of software applications are targeted at Win32 API and .NET Framework, not to speak about drivers for various consumer devices). Operating Systems submitted by tominla 05/29/07 I can buy a Dell server with no OS or software. I'd like to be able to buy PC's or notebooks with no OS or software. I have a full MSDN subscription, so I always end up paying extra for the OS on my Dell PC's and notebooks. I can still download the Dell drivers that I need. 10 Comments » Operating Systems submitted by stomarelli 05/29/07 All systems should be shipped a GENUINE OPERATING SYSTEM DISK. We are paying for a license and should be able to use it on a different computer if needed. 5 Comments » Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college. React OS, the only free windows. Operating Systems submitted by eligzero 05/28/07
How would you like to cut the cost of your operating system by 100%? Every time a dell computer is built, or any other computer for that matter, which requires a windows compatible operating system, a license must be purchased from Microsoft. There is no true free alternative, as Microsoft Windows is currently the defacto computer operating system. Meaning, every time someone wants a computer that is compatible with most programs out there, they must pay Microsoft. Except ofcourse, if ReactOS matures. Dell laptop designs are fine, functional and they are OK to look at. They are not Macs in design terms but who really gives a crap. Linux submitted by mkpeeters 05/27/07 Perhaps linux compatibility issues with dell hardware could be dealt with if they created their own linux distro, or support a community based distro. 3 Comments » Software submitted by mkpeeters 05/27/07 Dell should create thier own version of wine. This version should have an easy to use GUI that anyone could figure out. They should also fix some of the problems, and increase compatibility with more MS Win software. They should implement this into thier Ubuntu systems, and make it available to anyone whom owns a linux/BSD based Dell. 9 Comments » Sell Linux PCs Worldwide - not only the United States Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ergo 05/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Dell has now decided to sell computers with Linux pre-installed. GREAT MOVE! But for the moment, it only concerns the US... Here outside the US, we can't wait to buy a pre-installed Linux Dell PC! Please sell Linux PCs worldwide! Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vistaâ„¢..." from any publication Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07
It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self. Actually promote Desktop Linux Advertising and Marketing, Desktops, Linux submitted by mrvertigo 05/10/07
Dell offered desktop Linux once but seemingly did not market it as much as it could have, the company did not make money on a Linux desktop and decided to stop offering it, this is one reason that dell needs to effectively market its newest offertings Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS. Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now! Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
