Aluminum Keys on Dell Laptops

submitted by nsenman 12/03/07

What about putting Aluminum Keys on Dell Laptops? A lot of other companies have done so. I think it looks nicer, is more reliable, has great finger feel and response, makes the laptop look and seem more higher end quality wise.

If not all the Dell Laptops maybe at least the XPS line? 7 Comments »

Offer 256MB discrete Graphics on the m1330 also

submitted by ordinary_user 12/02/07

Please offer a 256MB Graphics card option also on the m1330 - just like the one offered on the m1530.

with apps like games, Google Earth, and Vista Premium, the 256MB seems like a necessity instead of an optional system requirement... 1 Comment »

Sell Linux PCs Worldwide - not only the United States

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ergo 05/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell has now decided to sell computers with Linux pre-installed. GREAT MOVE! But for the moment, it only concerns the US... Here outside the US, we can't wait to buy a pre-installed Linux Dell PC! Please sell Linux PCs worldwide!

Check out the details on Dell Linux systems worldwide!

Option on Website to display ALL Dell systems offering Windows XP

Dell submitted by arcturus 12/07/07

As Dell has now brought back Windows XP to a number of its system offerings, I think it would be a boon for Dell to have a selection from the Dell main website page to select to display ALL Dell systems (Desktops, Notebooks, Workstations, etc) currently offering WIndows XP (Either flavor) as an Operation System selection. All on one page (or series of pages) without having to traverse the entire website trying determine which systems offer XP and which do not.

This would allow those customers, who are waiting for Vista to prove itself (and allow for future service packs for Vista) OR simply DO NOT want Vista on their system to find the systems Dell has available with Windows XP...In particular XP Pro.

Simplify it...easier for quicker revenue generation, Dell.

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Provide XP Recovery CD's for Vista customers like Lenovo/IBM do.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 12/07/07

This great idea stolen straight from one of your competitors.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/VSTA-DWNGRD.html

Have a Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Microsoft Windows Ultimate system, but need to continue using Microsoft Windows XP for a while? For a limited time Lenovo is providing Windows XP Recovery CD media as a way to downgrade from Windows Vista.

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

Restore disk for Ubuntu

Linux submitted by limerat 11/13/07

People who use Windows get a restore disk, people who use Linux should get a restore disk as well.
I just bought a Dell last week...The update manager stopped working in Ubuntu.. So I went to the Ubuntu forums and pasted in the correction into the terminal which should have fixed the problem.-
It did not work.
I reinstalled the OS.
The machine would no longer go on line.
I finally end up at Dell tec support for Linux where I'm told there are missing drivers..So since Dell already knows about this, why are the drivers not installed on Ubuntu or supplied on a recovery disk, along with instructions for people new to Linux?
Anyway, I'm sent to a web page to download the drivers. Lucky for me a friend has let me borrow her computer,or I'd be up the creek without a paddle. I have yet to burn the disk though,as I'm only a guest on said computer.

I have to wonder who else this has happened to and if they can't download the drivers, what have they done? Have they set the machine on the curb for trash pickup?
This foul up is going to make a lot of people really unhappy and Dell needs to have fixed this before they decided to load Linux on their first box. There is no excuse for such inept sloppiness on the part of a professional company.
Had I known about this, I NEVER would have bought a Dell.

Anyway,I just so you know,Dell did provide a video drivers disk with Ubuntu...The problem was the disk had only Windows drivers....Which is useless..
Somebody at Dell needs to get a clue. 7 Comments »

List Power Details when configuring a computer

Desktops, Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage submitted by rotthund 10/15/07

When ponding the power consumptions of a CRT vs LCD display, I saw the Dell confiugation doesn't list a desktop's power supply details, nor it's typical power consumption. Monitor specs list those details. List those details on Dell computers, and show the estimated effect the configuration has on the computer's power details. 5 Comments »

Allow for a hardware configurable notebook

Laptops submitted by sawjd 12/05/07

Create a note book that allows us to easily switch out hardware and i don't just mean ram or optical drives but something like that allows to switch out video cards and the ability to upgrade processor as long as the motherboard supports it. This would be akin to the HP blackbird but for the notebook 1 Comment »

Include cleaning and screen protection cloth with laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jkeating 11/02/07

A nice dell branded cleaning cloth should be included with new laptops. This cloth would be used to clean the laptop sceens as well as lay on top of the keyboard when the laptop is closed to protect the screen from keyboard imprints. If a cloth is included it is far more likely that this cloth would be used to clean rather than some other cleaning device which may damage a user's screen. 10 Comments »

Identify Hardware with native Linux support

Linux submitted by waterguy1960 12/07/07

Please identify hardware choices that offer native linux support in the "build yours" options. And provide hardware choices that allow for a configuration that is entirely compatible with linux. This would be much more convenient that a list of linux supported hardware somewhere else on the website. If a computer model cannot be configured with native linux support, say so on the "build yours" page. I don't need or want Dell to install Ubuntu (or any other linux distribution) on a computer for me ... I just need to know that the computer I'm buying supports linux natively. The notebook computer my employer provided me works perfectly with linux. Unfortunately, despite much research before my purchase, not all the hardware on my Dell notebook provides native linux support. Comment »

This text on your web site regarding "open source" is misleading, please consider changing it.

submitted by cosh 11/25/07

From www.dell.com/open:

The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don't get a Windows® operating system.

This is the wrong impression to give, as it suggests that all open source software everywhere is somehow incompatible with Windows, whereas in reality many open source programs are ported to and available on Windows, such as Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice, and some popular open source programs are dedicated entirely to it, for example Paint.NET (info).

A better and more accurate thing to say would be:

"The main thing to note is that when you choose an open source operating system like Ubuntu Linux®, you don't get a Windows® operating system."

or how about:

"The main thing to note is that when you purchase a Dell computer preinstalled with Ubuntu or FreeDOS, you don't get a Windows operating system" etc. etc.

Concise, clear, and accurate. If I remember correctly there's a similar message on the other language versions of the Dell web site, so it should be changed there too.

If you've a better suggestion post it in the comments. 22 Comments »

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Allow ALL Dell Staff to Use Ideastorm

submitted by badblood 11/28/07

Apparently only a few moderators and spin doctors from Dell are allowed to use ideastorm and other staff aren't allowed. We were told that they were, but it aint true. We just heard it from a Dell employee. From the horse.

So let all Dell Staff use Ideastorm if they want.

Thanks

Move Faster To Implement Ideas, Remove Them and Give Feedback!

IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie 12/05/07

I count 20 Ideas on the first page of the popular Ideas page. I only know the status of one of them and that's the Dell Linux Repository idea. I know it's status because matt_d very kindly keeps us informed.

The other 19 ideas are a mystery. What's happening to these ideas? Give us feed back, implement or delete. Stop waisting my time. 35 Comments »
