Inform sales agents better on upcoming developments of a product
Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by ueli

I recently had some troubles with my TrueLife display.
Asking the sales agent about the nearer future (in this case, if there would be an optional non TrueLife display available for the XPS M 1530 soon) of a product, she replied "We don't know things like these".
Well of course the sales dept doesn't know every development. But since the product XPS M 1530 changed in many ways over the last two weeks, I expected, they at least know what's coming up in the nearest future.
For me it's now hard to tell if I should go and buy something else somewhere else without TrueLife or if I should wait one or two weeks to order the product I'd like.
In this case (I need a notebook pretty soon) I am afraid, there will be no other chance than go to another supplier that offers products with normal screens in the same range of processing power.
Thanks for reading this through.

Provide a keyboard with keys & spacing = the IBM Selectric TYPEWRITER!
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by phubert
Jan 22
Note: the use of the IBM Selectric typewriter is for REFERENCE ONLY - the IDEA is the key size and spacing, not a fixed format
Many of us report frequent 'fat finger' typing errors.
I don't know whether Dell has looked into this at all, but, although I have LIKED Dell's compact, _default_ keyboard, I've JUST thought that errors MIGHT be reduced significantly by using a keyboard similar in key size and spacing to the old IBM Selectric typewriter.
Some research might be needed... find one and duplicate it's layout, then run some trials.
Naturally, the actual _computer_ keyboard would also have all the appropriate keys on existing computer keyboards, but the sizing would match that of the original typewriter.

Produce Good Value "Green" Desktops & Laptops
Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dartiss
Jan 22
There are many suggestions here for various changes that could make a PC "greener".
As part of the companies green credentials, I believe that not only should as many of these as possible be a "default" option, but there should be specific "greener" models of desktops and laptops.
These would have lower power usage and should be created and shipped in a more environmentally friendly way. Components, too, could be kept to a minimum - onboard graphics and sound and a removal in "legacy" ports. The desktop version of this could use laptop components to better embrace this idea.
The vast majority of PC users require one for emails, internet browsing and office applications - a low powered (but not under-powered) PC and laptop that are more than sufficient for this should be easy to produce.

Any news about an M2030 notebook?
XPS products submitted by kanoneno

Hi, I´m a fan of the XPS M2010, and I´m really looking foward for a XPS M2030. I´m a visual artist and video producer and editor and music composer, and for what I do, the XPS M1730 has it all. The thing is that the 17 inch display is not enough or at least not comftable enough for working, thats why I prefer the 20 inch display. I really don´t mind about the weight and those issues because, no matter what, is better to carry around a notebook of those dimensions than a desktop of any weight and size. As I dont have a specific place to work like an office, I usually have to keep moving from one place to another. Anyway, there are some things that I would like to see in a upgraded version of the M2010, that is: - A WXUGA display - I noticed that a big discussion about this issue is in the mind of all the enthusiasts. I don´t know if it´s posible. - At least 512 MB in the graphics card. - The Ageia PhysX processor available in the 1730 - And higher processor speeds. I realize that this don´t depend on you but in Intel or AMD, Anyway I´m more than happy with the 2.8Ghz of the Intel Dual Core Extreme processor but it would be nice to see it rise.
I don´t know if any of this things are technically posible for the time being, but those options will really increase the performance up to the level of working really comftable with heavy tasks such as video editing and music composing.

CD and DVD Jukebox/Changer
submitted by crunch
11/26/07
A USB connected 500 Disc Carousel Jukebox/Changer with included database software (with a slick interface) to search for ...AND PLAY... a chosen DVD title. Much like the "Imation Disc Stakka"...
The only things about this device that makes it fall short is that it doesn't PLAY the chosen disc, and it only holds 100 discs. I've seen this Stakka unit priced at a mere $99. Consider that you can pick up a generic DVD player at your local "Mart" for around $40... makes ya wonder why they stopped before they were finished. I think the combination of both would fit right into the HTPC entertainment system... which is why I found myself at this site! If there isn't such a device already available, there needs to be!

My rep does not have the latest laptop to show me while he is visiting
Sales Strategies submitted by fahlenkp
11/26/07
Every time my Dell rep visits he has a pathetic old laptop. Every time he visits Dell has the opportunity to show me their latest as well as provide me with a direct source of knowledge. Every time my Dell reps show up and telsl me about how dumb it is that they have to wait so long for a laptop it makes me wonder about your bottom line, your judgement and future.
My last rep lived in a house with 2 front doors, a 4 car garage and it is on a golf course near Boulder. Just pointing out he isn't hurting for money. Cut his pay enough per year for a new laptop. Or give him a new laptop. Or give parts of bonuses as hardware. This is such a small thing for you to upgrade every year. Lease laptops internally to your sales? You figure it out. If the new line is out, my rep should have that hot new laptop of choice in his hands before he enters my cardswipey door.

Unintelligible system summary details on the support page
Simplify IT submitted by fahlenkp
11/26/07
I can't count the number of times I have hoped to have the system summary help me out after entering a service tag. I should be able to go look for details that help me. The hard drive brand and model, the webcam, whatever. Sometimes you can find information based on the part number and some searching. The ideal solution would be to have HUMAN READABLE details in the field describing the part number. I'll paste an example of what is listed at the end of this post.
You guys have amazing database systems. Why not show them off? Give me details of my system with a part number, a replacement name that makes sense and a link to purchase the old part or a new upgrade? Why not post a link to not only the newest driver but the oldest driver and firmware as well? All of this data should be a few clicks away, not a maze where normal users give up.

dont gouge customers on price of software depending on model
Sales Strategies submitted by ordinary_user
11/27/07
Its unfair that Dell charges differential pricing for4 the same software (e.g. MS Office) depending on whether the product being configured is a notebook or PC.
Why should MS Office (same edition) cost 12-15% more if loaded on laptops versus on PC?? this smacks of nickel and diming customers and only makes me choose to buy it from retail rather than Dell. why lose the sale opportunity and cause ill feeling for such things??

XPS M1330 Laptop with Docking Station
Small Business, XPS products submitted by matto
11/27/07
The XPS M1330 Laptop is a stunning laptop, but is also ideal for a lot of business people on the move. It's lightweight, it's thin, it's got a slot-loading DVD drive. Dell seem to recognise this by listing it as an option in the Small Business section (here on the Dell.com.au website at least). And they're right - it would be perfect for me, except for the lack of a docking station.
I use my laptop both at work and at home. I have a docking station at each location. This means I simply need to drop the laptop in, and straight away it's hooked up to the mains power, to my keyboard and mouse, to the wired network and to my secondary monitor. You can see how the lack of a docking station makes this process a lot more tedious. Fair enough - the keyboard and mouse can be replaced with bluetooth items, but there's still the network (no wireless at work), the power and the secondary LCD. This constant need to plug and unplug would soon take the sheen of an otherwise perfect device, not to mention the likelihood of damaging the delicate connectors with daily use.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to use the XPS M1330 for work, if only this one little problem could be overcome. I understand the challenges in packaging such a thin and light notebook, but I'm sure that greater minds than mine are able to come up with something!
I know I'm probably just a bit lazy, but the docking station really is one of life's little luxuries. I dare anyone who's used one previously to try and do without!
Thanks for the chance to put it forward.
Regards, Matto :)

For better -current- VISIBILITY, MERGE UP rather than DOWN
IdeaStorm submitted by phubert
11/27/07
Merging into the EARLIEST submission has been the practice to-date at IdeaStorm.
But, we've had discussions about the nature of DUPLICATES where we've begun to define MANY such "duplicates" as, rather, "REPEATS" of issues that seemingly have seen NO attention from Dell.
Since we seem to have identified the need (or OUR need) for REPEATS, IF such "duplicates" are to be MERGED, wouldn't it make sense to merge the OLDER with the MORE RECENT?
What do you think?
After all, guys, does any of us really need POINTS????

XPS M1530 Resolution ??

SCREEN RESOLUTIONS for XPS Laptop Line
Why on God's green earth would Dell throw in such a cheapy LCD screen into the XPS 1530 ? I've been waiting for this laptop religously since it was 'announced', in the hope of a 1680x1050 screen, or at LEAST 1440x900. What is this, Dell ? Are you trying to scare away your customers with blocky icons and low resolutions ?
Ok, on a less rampaging note ..
Is there any possibility this might change in the future ? Would i be foolish to order immediately, only to see a couple of LCD options pop up over the next few days ? We now offer 1440 x 900 and 1680 x 1050 panels as an option. Take a look at the Direct2Dell blog post on the idea.

Preinstall Windows Defender on Windows XP Systems
Desktops submitted by obyone89
11/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Just as you offer the freely available Adobe Reader to be preinstalled on systems, offer the freely available Windows Defender spyware protection software as an option to your customers in addition to the products from Symantec and McAfee that must be paid for. Windows Defender works quite well and is better than nothing as a form a malware protection. It's already part of Windows Vista so why not allow Windows XP customers to get it preinstalled.

Slight Hiccup w/XPS m1530 ordering. Update Site Dell.
Dell Web Site, XPS products submitted by cosmichellion
11/27/07
After vigilant watch for the M1530, I placed my order today. Notice that the Dell website indicates the fingerprint reader is available. Both on the page where you choose your start build price and on the design page.
However, when you order there is no option to add a fingerprint reader. So...I call sales. Sales is unable to find the option anywhere. I was joking around and wondered if the web designer just copied and pasted the 1330 info. The rep laughed and said it was possible.
The fingerprint reader isn't a big deal really. However, I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss out on the option if it was in fact available. It never hurts to double check.
Dell, Please update the information on the site as to avoid confusion or update the order screen to include the fingerprint reader option.

How about a Dell XPS m1410 notebook?
XPS products submitted by bigkris
11/27/07
I have for some time now been looking for a new notebook. My criteria’s have been portability, long battery life, design and functionality. I find the XPS m1330 very attractive in all these aspects, but the size of the screen is just a little too small for my needs, and the size on the new XPS m1530 is a little too big, since the laptop loses to much of its portability. In my opinion, the perfect size would be a 14.1 inch. Alternatively, I have looked at HP Pavilion dv2600 series, but the battery life and the weight of these notebooks can’t really match the XPS. In my opinion a XPS m1410 notebook would be the ideal laptop as it would have a great design, great specs, portability, and a large degree of functionality.

Donations for Ubuntu development
Linux submitted by dave-2
11/27/07
If Dell ever implements the idea (and this, and this, and this, etc) allowing users to select Ubuntu from a list of OS options instead of going to another section of the website to order a special "N" series model, the Ubuntu option should cost less than the Windows options.
In addition to the OS configuration buttons, offer two buttons that allow the user to contribute that savings back toward Ubuntu development:
o Donate $0 to Ubuntu (default) o Donate $25 to Ubuntu (split the savings) o Donate $50 to Ubuntu (donate the full amount saved)
The amount of the full donation should reflect the cost of the least expensive version of Windows (e.g. Genuine Windows(r) Vista Home Premium) .
