Dell should sue its greatest enemy -- Death to "http://www.ihatedell.net"!

Dell submitted by winoffice 05/12/07

That web site is offensive and almost certainly is illegal, and unfairly damages Dell's reputation. In fact, I am sure that most of us here at Ideastorm love Dell just for creating Dell Ideastorm! If Dell would sue ihatedell, then things would surely be better for all of us Dell fans. 11 Comments »

Now You Choose – Concept 1

Gaming, XPS products submitted by dell_admin1 04/25/07

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Choose” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Set Digg.com as the default homepage in Firefox

Dell Community, Software submitted by firefoxplease 05/07/07

If Dell listens to its customers, then we'll soon be seeing Firefox as the default browser on their machines. Let's take it one step further and make Digg.com the default homepage in Firefox for Dell machines. 12 Comments »

Let's use this forum for progress and ideas not repeating the same idea.

IdeaStorm submitted by dgdesign 03/15/07

Everyone keeps talking about the SAME thing.

That is what the vote icon is for (to agree with the comment). If everyone would choose to "vote" the numbers for your dearly beloved Linux would be staggering. Instead I have to rummage through tons of copycats to see other great ideas. There are currently 208 pages of "ideas" and 80 percent of them are people reapeating the praises of Linux. I understand you love Linux, but I am pretty sure its been said already on one or two posts.

Also if you feel something was left out of the actual statement you agree with you might notice an orange link below for COMMENTS. Try using that. I am sure the Dell reps that are reviewing this site are looking at those too. It only makes sense to post your thoughts there instead of using up space just to see your comment there.

I feel bad using one of those posting spaces to rant a bit, but I feel its needed.

How many people know that there are comments on high-end audio cards, color calibration or USB widgets for Dell monitors? There are plenty of other good ideas out there, like a new laptop power "brick" or noise ratings. 14 Comments »

"Completed ideas" tab

IdeaStorm submitted by mattd 03/29/07

Create a "Completed ideas" tab. When Dell implements an idea submitted on IdeaStorm, they should move the idea off of the "Popular ideas" tab and on to the "Completed ideas" tab. That will show a direct link between an idea that is submitted and the idea being implemented.

And then when Dell finally delivers their Linux computer, they can move the 65674 Linux requests there.

Geeks to Grandmas - Service Customization

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering providing customers the ability to self-select their service queue based on their own technical capability, such as "Advanced Computer Knowledge," "Intermediate," or "Beginner," further customizing the support experience.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback! Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, that has not yet been determined and we’re hoping to use your comments to help define the answer. 82 Comments »

Remove metallic Windows sticker

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07

The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!)

Replace the metallic sticker with an easily removable one !!! Dell should be large enough to stand up to Microsoft (who no doubt enforces the metal stickers). 23 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

IdeaStorm should check to see if your post is similar to existing posts

IdeaStorm submitted by hjwasson 04/26/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

One of the greatest failings with IdeaStorm's otherwise wonderful concept is that many similar posts are created - and although they all get votes, no one post gets enough votes to rise to Dell's attention.

When you submit a post, I would like to see IdeaStorm search for similar posts, and if it finds any, prompt you:

Your post seems similar to this/these post(s):

1. Yes, it is. Please make my post a comment to the existing post instead (& I will vote on that post).

2. No, they are different - but related. Please associate my post to the existing post.

3. No, my post is not related - continue posting.

#2 is related to my suggestion to be able to be able to associate similar posts:

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66450/Provide_a_way_to_associate_simila...

For all of this to work, Dell would have to vastly improve it's search ability within IdeaStorm (perhaps collaborate with Google?)! Use Google's advanced search features, with www.ideastorm.com as the domain to search, if you want to see for yourself the differences in how well the search features function.

Duplicate ideas suggestion feature has been added.

coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ergo 05/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Numeric Keypad on Notebooks

Laptops submitted by tpjoseph 02/21/07

Since notebooks are larger and have plenty of unused space below the keyboard and to the right of the touchpad, can we make a few models with a numeric keypad?

There are probably a HUGE number of engineers, accountants, analysts that would be FAR better served by this addition. The top row of number is nowhere near as efficient as a numeric keypad.

As soon as this feature becomes available, send me an email and I will buy my next Dell notebook.

Thanks. 1 Comment »

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.
