Quiet, please! ssssssssshhhhhhh....

Dimension products submitted by camper 06/23/07

I just purchased a E520 Dimension desktop. The main fan is very quiet, and the CPU cooling is nicely designed (thank-you!). However, the power supply fan is noisy. I realize the constraints placed upon Dell by their low-margin business model, and I was willing to swap out the noisy power supply for a quiet one. Then I discovered the proprietary nature of the power supplies that Dell uses.

If all Dell can provide is noisy power supplies, can you at least use standard power supply form factors so that I can put a quiet power supply in the place of the noisy ones that Dell supplies? 7 Comments »

Dell should secure Military contracts to sell more hardware

Dell, Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg 04/02/07

<font>

The new Reaper combat drone is ready for combat.

Dell should look into developing small combat computing systems.
Not as big as a Reaper, more on the size of the personal kill-bots, spider-mines,
and other mobile anti-personnel and anti-vehicle weapons made popular in SciFi and Video Games.

The New Dell Combat Systems can be easy for troops to deploy to fortify defensive positions.

The DCS can implement the newly developed Combo Battery/Explosive
- Under normal power draw conditions, the battery pack acts as a regular battery.
But also has a dual function, when engaging a target, the battery activates a total discharge,
in combination with explosive gel, the battery+gel acts as the ordinance in the device.
This design saves space in the Kill-Bot / Spider Mine, for easier transport and deployment.

Military contracts tend to be worth Millions or Billions of Dollars,
with guaranteed revenue from government contracts, as long as the contractor delivers.

Dell delivers excellent notebooks and desktop systems,
it's time to expand into other, much more lucrative product lines. 39 Comments »

Rename IdeaStorm FarceStorm - or stop making a mockery of how you respond to (and ignore) ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 08/28/07

Quoting a long-time IdeaStorm users's comments on a different Idea - user jorge summarized my biggest frustration with IdeaStorm

All Ideas that have been supposedly implemented have only been implemented in their weird spun way, never has the implementation been true to the idea. That alone tells you this is FarceStorm.
To new users that might seem like just an inflammatory rant - but look closely at Dell's actions and you'll see it's not an exaggeration at all.
They marked No OS as "already offered" - despite it being only offered on a few (mostly obsolete) models (like the Latitude D620 when the D630's been out for a long time now) and in a few regions --- and obviously it's not considered "already offered" by users on the models they want because it keeps getting re-posted no matter how often the re-merge it. They marked Linux as completed before they even released it in the US - and pretty much stopped moving on it even though it's only available on a few models in a few countries. The marked XP as "Implemented" even though it's only available on a few (mostly obsolete) models in a few countries. They marked "Same Discounts available for Windows and Linux" as "implemented" when in most countries they still offer Windows for cheaper than Linux and Windows seems cheaper on many models in the US on most days as well. They marked "No Extra Software Option" as "partially implemented" when they re-defined "no extra software" to allow exceptions for some of the software (anti-virus and google toolbars) that were most strongly opposed by the IdeaStorm posters -- and even so it's only available on a few models.

While jorge's quote and this subject's title appear to be exaggerated and/or jokes at first glance - look at Dell's actions and if there's any spin it's that FarceStorm might be too kind a term to use.

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this Idea until you've addressed the top-rated ideas which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses. 26 Comments »

Dell Logo Stickers

Advertising and Marketing submitted by jorge 05/23/07

Dell should provide a plethora of Dell Logo stickers with each system so its users can stamp them on their prized possessions to show their brand loyalty and show the world what they use for a computer.

Benefits: Dell gets free advertising, and when those rambunctious teens splatter them on the back of street signs, skateboards, surfboards, laptops, basketball backboards, cars, courthouses, friends, you name it. Dell will be entrenched in the teen market (the future purchasers and current technology pushers at home).

Hey Apple does it, so why not join the bandwagon, just put an environmental friendly disclaimer to ward off any lawsuits, but make the glue as good as krazy glue, we don't want them to fall off easily. 4 Comments »

Preinstall and support localcooling

Environment submitted by novovia 05/30/07

Localcooling is a small program design to reduce energy consumption. This would be great if Dell install by default and support by helping the development of this small tool.
More information: www.localcooling.com
From the website: "It automatically optimizes your PC's power consumption by using a more effective power save mode. You will be able to see your savings in real-time translated to more environmental terms such as how many trees and gallons of oil you have saved. "

Manual Fan Control

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by phii 06/16/07

Hi,
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 9400 and I am quite happy with it.
I don't like that the system gets pretty hot though. The bios lets the fans kick in too late means at too high temperatures.
That's why it would be great if I could somehow change these temperature values which activate the Fans.

Thanks,

Phil. 6 Comments »

Choose your linux

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by nathan42100 06/21/07

As opposed to having Ubuntu as the set linux standard for Dell, maybe they should offer a few more choices such as RedHat or Novell, and possibly, if your choice isn't listed, an Other box with a link to your selected Linux. 5 Comments »

Build a Dell Linux Distribution

Linux, New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jemfisher 02/20/07

With the wave of support for the Linux kernel to power desktop PC's, I think its time for a company with the quality build that Dell has to provide users with PC's that work for them. The adoption of Linux to power Dell PC's would give Dell a greater freedom to move forward with innovation. With the adoption of a Linux kernel Dell would be able to sell PC to meet users' demands. Businesses demand different machines than home users, students demand different machines again, machines targeted at younger users, etc. 100 Comments »

Ubuntu Linux systems Down Under

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by finkisadink May 10

At present it's not possible to buy a Dell system with Linux preinstalled within Australia. This is something that I believe should be resolved as soon as practicable — at present I'm having to buy systems with Windows preinstalled, only to never use that license... and this also costs me time & money as I have to perform a full SOE build from scratch. 6 Comments »

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Acer poised to push Linux - Will DELL be left behind?

Dell, Linux submitted by phubert Jun 5

How many times have suggestions been posted that Dell raise the visibility -and the extent- of its Linux offerings?

How little have we heard back in return?

Acer is planning to push Linux on laptops now.
Isn't it TIME for Dell to join in??? ****

The most requested feature...

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by xivulon 09/26/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

There are several proposals that basically ask the same thing: SHOW UBUNTU IN THE LIST OF OPERATING SYSTEM ON ALL MACHINES [subtract $50]. And why not, add XP to the list as well. There are also many more proposals that would be made redundant IF the above was implemented. If you add them all together that is probably the most requested feature at the moment. Yes I think many of the ideas below can be merged.

http://www.dellideastorm.com/article/show/67692

...and many more...

Of course not all hardware choices will go down well with Ubuntu, but you have a conflict resolution system in place to notify users that make incompatible choices, and that could easily be extended to address conflicts between hardware and operating system. The only reason not to have Ubuntu is when there are fundamental incompatibilities that cannot be addressed by swapping wireless card or video card (suspend/hibernation...). In this case show "No operating system" (no point in having "No operating system" when a free operating system is available).

So, don't hide Ubuntu in some dark corner of your website only known to geeks, give customers a REAL choice...

Only supported stuff on linux laptops/desktops

Linux, Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by alexanthony May 28

I just tried to customise an ubuntu laptop (UK site) and saw that I could add a printer which I am unsure if it supports linux (says Windows 98/XP/Vista). It can't be too hard to make it clear whether or not this printer is supported, and if not, it shouldn't be advertised when customising an ubuntu system.

I also discovered that I could buy Norton Internet Security for it. Does a linux version really exist? No. Should I be able to buy it as part of a linux system? No.

Someone could get really confused when they try to use "supported" accessories and software then realise that they're not... 10 Comments »

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Have Ubuntu on Dell One

Linux, XPS products submitted by daniel117 Mar 12

After hearing a couple magazines and people say Vista has glitches, I think Dell's best computer ever (and best counterpart of Apple's Macs) this computer company should start looking into Linux more, especially Ubuntu. Oh sure, Dell didn't get enough people into Ubuntu, but that can be easily fixed by putting Linux into Dell One. Dell is missing out on more sales from Ubuntu fans and all you geeks out there. Not much of them, but popularity would spread and soon Vista is in the dust (not that I hate Vista, but I like Ubuntu better). 11 Comments »
