6 major issues to be fixed by Dell

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.

1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.

2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".

3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.

4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.

5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.

6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company? 78 Comments »

Improve Web Site Photos of Products

Dell Web Site submitted by kenjennings 05/16/07

The product photos on the Dell web site are dismal, boring, and dull to the point of detracting from the products. My wife's Inspiron laptop arrived yesterday and it looks magnificent in real life -- nothing like web site pictures. I actually looked up the laptop on the web site again to make sure she wasn't mistakenly shipped the wrong model.

Whoever does this -- marketing,PR, IT -- needs to get a better camera or maybe some photography and art design courses. The real life Inspiron looks slick, pearly, and lustrous while the web site's photos look like flat, grey, plastic. 4 Comments »

Dell should post a graph next to each idea so we can track its point history.

IdeaStorm submitted by jakerivers 05/23/07

Dell should post a graph next to each idea so we can track its point history. I have noticed that some ideas dip into the negative then rise to positive then dip into the negative again, and so on.

Hi,

I would like to see the numberpad attached on your 17" notebooks. I do a lot of accounting work and would find this very convenient. 3 Comments »

IdeaStorm should check to see if your post is similar to existing posts

IdeaStorm submitted by hjwasson 04/26/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

One of the greatest failings with IdeaStorm's otherwise wonderful concept is that many similar posts are created - and although they all get votes, no one post gets enough votes to rise to Dell's attention.

When you submit a post, I would like to see IdeaStorm search for similar posts, and if it finds any, prompt you:

Your post seems similar to this/these post(s):

1. Yes, it is. Please make my post a comment to the existing post instead (& I will vote on that post).

2. No, they are different - but related. Please associate my post to the existing post.

3. No, my post is not related - continue posting.

#2 is related to my suggestion to be able to be able to associate similar posts:

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66450/Provide_a_way_to_associate_simila...

For all of this to work, Dell would have to vastly improve it's search ability within IdeaStorm (perhaps collaborate with Google?)! Use Google's advanced search features, with www.ideastorm.com as the domain to search, if you want to see for yourself the differences in how well the search features function.

Duplicate ideas suggestion feature has been added.

Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

A few things

Dell submitted by korax 02/26/07

1. Noise - I support a small number of users in my community - almost all of them have complained about the LOUD fan noise coming from Dell desktops.

2. Trailware - yes I'll add my voice to this - makes a new win computer a complete mess. Get rid of it!!!

3. Offer Firefox as browser option

4. Backlit keyboard on notebooks

5. How about a well designed desktop? Look at the imac.

6. OS options

7. Better support!!! I used to recommend Dell becuase of your great phone support. Now it stinks. You shouldn't have to pay extra for premium support.

8. General comment: When in doubt - SIMPLIFY!!! Comment »

Ubuntu for home users

Linux submitted by boulderpc 02/26/07

In the absence of good service under the old leadership at Dell my business is booming. Along the way I have had the opportunity to load a variety of Linux builds including the ones already listed in other posts in this forum. Without fail the build that works best with your hardware has been Ubuntu with emphasis on the KDE version called Kubuntu. My customers who have Dell computers and who made the switch from Windows to Kubuntu absolutely love it-passionately!

With that said and from this professionals point of view, if Dell were to offer D-Link wireless products and Kubuntu pre-loaded Dell would have the perfect computer for the average home and office users.

And let it be known, if ya'all don't followup on this "Idea Storm", my company will! So get it together or maybe next year you'll be at my website ordering your new computer from me! The BPC 6100! 1 Comment »

Very Tiny Form Factor Desktop

Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by wh 02/26/07

A small form factor with only limited expansion might be a very good idea whose time is ripe. Ask customers how many are tired of a large, noisy, box taking up half of their desk or floor. Ask them if they think the small "cubes" are cool. Essentials would be at least 1 PCI/PCIX slot and 1 AGP slot, CD/DVD+/-R, single hard disk, quiet operation, lots of USB/firewire ports, and low cost. Dell could also do cool things like colored cases or clear plastic cases, allowing users to personalize their boxes. My daughter is in elementary school and loves her electric blue case, but a small, pink, stylish case would really get her eye.

Such a solution could also be billed as more "green" (lots less packaging, less shipping weight, smaller hence less garbage when disposing, opportunity for lower power consumption, less noise). Dell could market it as being more environmental friendly than their competition! Comment »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

No WGA preinstalled

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by ashburnsp 02/26/07

I suggest Dell not sell PCs with Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) installed on its OSs, since the OSs are genuine by default and there is no need for WGA. Last year I found a keylogger with Guardian Monitor registry keys on my highly secured Dell Precision Workstation. I reinstalled all software from the original installation CDs, did a Windows Update via the Microsoft Windows Update service, and the keylogger was back! This happened twice. Then I emailed Webroot and asked them if they'd ever seen this--they hadn't. After the third reinstall, the keylogger mysteriously wasn't there. I don't see how this keylogger could have been installed except through the Windows Update service. Therefore, I oppose Dell selling computers with WGA preinstalled since this app "calls home" to Microsoft and allows them (or whomever they're in collusion with) to install software surreptitiously on your computer by echo-reply ICMP. There is no reason for Dell to expose its customers to this kind of covert surveillance. I don't think Microsoft will risk irritating Dell, and probably will give in and let Dell sell OSs that are WGA-free. Security is good for sales, and Dell will come out ahead on this one. 1 Comment »

Home SAN product

Servers and Storage submitted by mangelwulf 02/26/07

I want to buy a home SAN product. A small box that will connect to my home LAN and supply additional storage. It needs to be only slightly more than one of the one touch back up boxes, but work for multiple PC's as both backup and additional storage. Any interest? 2 Comments »

adopt Apple iPod, MacBookPro and related systems with pizzazz and appeal

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by educateme 02/26/07

The Dell brand is tired and old hat, the closest thing to innovation Dell has ever done was to quickly change the beige ugly PC boxes to a more subtle back and gray or silver like Apple did many years ago. The tool-less case design was another (not) innovational move that Dell copied from Apple some time ago.

Other attempts by Dell to copy apple with the DJ music player were a Flop, and the recent decision by microsoft to "stick it to" its partners who embraced "plays for sure" and instead got Zuned results in a lopsided and crippled DRM and media player device for all PC users.

It would boost Dells marketing panache if it were to agree to sell Apple hardware such as the iPod and put a new sparkle in an old PC builder who has lost touch with the consumer side of design or the details about owning a PC rather than just trying to build the cheapest box of parts from Taiwan with lame support from India. 1 Comment »

DVI for Notebooks

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by dellmanfred 02/20/07

I cannot understand why we still have to be punished with these vga plugs build into notebooks. Who's actually buying a CRT monitor these days so that he/she would need a vga plug?!?!
On top of that it must be cheaper too to have a straight digital ouptut without a D/A converter. So please, get rid of the vga plug and put a proper DVI plug into your notebooks. For the sake of our eyes!!!! 10 Comments »
