There are several proposals that basically ask the same thing: SHOW UBUNTU IN THE LIST OF OPERATING SYSTEM ON ALL MACHINES [subtract $50]. And why not, add XP to the list as well. There are also many more proposals that would be made redundant IF the above was implemented. If you add them all together that is probably the most requested feature at the moment. Yes I think many of the ideas below can be merged. Dell has now decided to sell computers with Linux pre-installed. GREAT MOVE! But for the moment, it only concerns the US... Here outside the US, we can't wait to buy a pre-installed Linux Dell PC! If Dell truly wishes to promote their Ubuntu line of computers then they should make sure that all of their devices work properly with the OS. For instance, the SP2008WFP monitor, while it does display everything fine, does not have drives for Linux systems of any kind. Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives... It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop. Dell's offerings of Linux PCs varies too greatly from country to country. If people in the UK can get more powerful processors (N-Series Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750 Processor (2.66GHz, 1333Mhz FSB, 4MB cache)) and multiple hard drives (640GB (2x320GB) 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive - Dual HDD Config) than so should people in the states. I can understand trial implementations to test the waters before having a larger rollout; but how difficult can it be to offer more options for processors, hard drives, etc? It would be nice to be able to change the windows key for a linux key when you build your machine. This CPU is a low-to-moderate performance choice; it is near the lowest offering in the Windows line-up. While Linux clearly out-performs Windows on modest hardware, the choice of Linux doesn't merely reflect a cost-savings and performance-optimized decision. Users may want the choice of high-end CPUs for intensive applications with Linux. Windows is not the choice of those who want high-end equipment; it requires high-end equipment to run "well". Linux users seeking peak performance will thus want fast processors. (Note that the most/fastest supercomputers run Linux). Support for such processors / motherboards isn't an issue for Linux, so certification by Dell shouldn't be difficult (??). The profit margin is likely higher on these CPUs (??), so that should be attractive. So why doesn't Dell include fast Intel or AMD offerings such as quad-core, 64 X2, core 2 extreme, etc.? 6 Comments » Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17 I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this.
