Dell OS Options

Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kholz 04/16/07

I think Dell should build it's Desktops/Notebooks that are fully compatible with the Linux Kernel, Solaris Kernel and any of the *BSD Kernels. The Linux distribution should never be an issue if all the hardware is supported by the Linux Kernel, the same would go for most of the other UNIX like systems supported by the x86 and x86_64 architectures. Dell should follow Apple and Sun's lead by using open source to promote innovation. 4 Comments »

PC Restore

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Operating Systems submitted by parucoool 04/16/07

As PC Restore utility is shipped with Image on the HDD and it can get erased if cust formats the HDD.Dell can send the PCrestore Image in such a way that even after format it should not get erased i.e cust should not be able to erase the image. It will save the cost of shipping the Operating System disks. 6 Comments »

HP lets me choose which Vista Sticker (or none!!!) they glue on their laptops. Dell, let us choose none too.

Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 04/16/07

HP gives me the helpful option of letting me choose not to deface my laptop with a Vista sticker.
It also apparently saves me the $1 cost of the sticker.

VISTA label

- Microsoft® Vista Ready Label cannot be configured with Free DOS Operating System.
Please remove this label from your configuration. [3154]
- The Windows Vista™ Basic logo is not compatible with the 2 DIMM memory modules. [3769]

. No Item Selected <flash>[Subtract $1.00]</flash>
. Microsoft® Vista Ready Label [Subtract $1.00]
. Genuine Windows Vista™ Basic Logo
. Genuine Windows Vista™ Logo [Subtract $1.00]

Yes, they also give me the option of not getting Vista at all on that page (saving $75) but I think that's been pointed out in other ideas on ideastorm before.

Dell: Please give us the option not to get a sticker - and, like HP, to make the systems without a Vista Basic Logo cheaper than ones with the ugly sticker.

Non-Proprietary Hardware!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by blackwolf 04/16/07

Dell, as a major computer/systems builder, should build systems that use NON-proprietary hardware. Proprietary motherboards, power supplies, and other equipment that Dell frequently has built to fill specific models of desktops, are only a problem once those desktops are out of warranty - usually within 1 or 2 years, 3 if the consumer paid extra - and are a [edited by moderator] to replace later, when the consumer is usually having issues with his/her desktop. Instead of being able to replace a proprietary piece of hardware, the user often has to either buy a new system (and usually does NOT want to do this) or has to have so many components replaced that they may as well have bought a new system. An interesting note to all this: Most base line consumers, genuinely like the computer case that came w/ their systems, but get frustrated and upset when they find out that all the parts inside it are proprietary and that replacing parts is problematic at best, and impossible at worst. Dell would garner a lot of consumer interest in its products if it quit using proprietary products. This is one reason why I always build every single system I own, with the exception of laptops. usb hardware scalebility integration

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by cybergod 04/16/07

i notice that there is an extream amount of new hardware comming out in
USB interface form. network cards both wired and wireless, large usb
drives noth flash and disk, and now even new RAM upgrades i have seen come
in a new USB interface form. another thing i notice is because they are in
USB form they all must be plugged outside if the computer making alot of
what should be internal hardware sit outside of the computer which can be
dangerous for some hardware to be if removed incorrectly, for example you
cant remove a nic card just because it is usb the computer which depends
on it for communication can have problems if setup for USB and it is just
removed. you can also crash a computer with the new usb ram upgrade if you
just pull it out. computer designers make USB devices like these because
most people are unable to install the internat versions them selves, but
that does not mean this hardware like nic's or ram should still be sitting
outside the computer. i had an idea why not create a compartment resesed
in the computer which can be accessed via a door on the back of the
computer without any unscrewing or dismanteling of the computer and in
this compartment will contain multipule USB ports which can be used for
USB system hardware like a nic card, USB drive or even the new ram sticks
i have seen comming out, so now a simple user can install a ram upgrade or
nic as easy as they always have using USB technology but with my idea it
will be internal to the computer.. i feel this is practical as more basic user are using USB hardware because they are not about to take appart there own computer to install card hardware

Promote the advancement and involvement of women in computer use and design

Education, Women Interest submitted by badblood 04/16/07

In the United States, the number of women represented in engineering and information technology peaked in the late 1980s. Since then, the percentage of women in the computing profession declined from 35.2% in 1990 to 28.4% in 2000. In computer science in particular, there has been a dramatic drop in women earning bachelor's degrees. A report from the Computing Research Association indicated that the number recently fell below 20%, from nearly 40% in the mid 80s. Research has shown that many misperceptions about computing persist and may discourage women.

Support the role that women play in technology.

Option of complete customization

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kalpakrg 04/16/07

Give options for complete customization of the system. Like people can pick and choose from whatever processor to any RAM, Hard Drive, Wifi card, OS etc. Give options to people to (Virtually) assemble there machines. Also there can be options
for designs, colors that can provide skinning. Also maybe if you standardize on the size, shape, dimensions of the body, a lot of people can innovate for outer looks of the laptops. 1 Comment »

more specified on grouping the customer

Service and Support submitted by ray_linn 04/17/07

As we know, the service is very important for a famous company to keep on growing up. IBM already turned into a sevice company from a computer manufacture. How about Dell?

I believe Dell have a very good foundation of relationship with customer. the Dell website provides the chance to configurate the PC I prefer, but is it enought? I don' t think so.

My idea is Dell to allow the customer more specified about how they will use the Dell computer. Some customer buy it for development software , some just for stock purcharse, and some is for entertament, different requirement need different kinds of software support. there is an oppurtunite for Dell to provide a custimozie software choice (Open source, Game, music, stock ...), so it is very easy to DIY a computer with all (or major ) the software I need, and Dell earn money from that.

Thanks

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:

- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!

- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls

- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]

- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program

- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing

- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell

Dell is constantly reviewing options to offer to customers. As this is available for free today, we do not currently plan on offering this as an option to factory install.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.
