Pre installed software

Software submitted by vaughnhart 05/22/07

My idea is to make a list of software options available and allow us to choose exactly what we want on our system. Provide the list and a clear description of what each software choice provides. Just like we choose amount of memory, size of hard drive, etc. 2 Comments »

Fix Sonic Drive Letter Access on new Vista machines

Software submitted by udonkey 05/23/07

Dell has been selling Vista machines now for almost 4 full months, yet new computers are still being shipped with the old Sonic Drive Letter Access (a.k.a. Roxio Drag-to-Disc). This causes a very annoying popup and affects system performance on startup.

This is a relatively easy fix for computer owners (download via Roxio.com), but this should be something even easier for Dell to fix on their end.

Get it right the first time...stop making your customers have to fix your mistakes. 2 Comments »

Offer Vi Reference Mug as option or included with Linux OS's

Linux submitted by jorge 05/23/07

Dell should offer or include the Vi Reference Mug for Linux OS sales. This will provide novice (aka noob's, hey need to use Linux lingo) a handy editing reference as they are weened off of Notepad, MS-Word and other GUI based editors. This will reduce the amount of support calls as to why they can't edit a file or get out of input mode or into it, not to mention why their files are filled with ~'s. 10 Comments »

3 Grand Ideas for Ubuntu on Dell

Linux submitted by xaviour 05/23/07

If you're going to do LINUX. Do LINUX RIGHT.

1) Make use of/and or continue development of OpenGL/Beryl/Compiz.

I know that this is primarily a Novell thing, however, that project was governed by the GPL v2 was it not? Let's make linux fun for all, and easy to use.

2) Offer the Enlightenment desktop as an available option with your Ubuntu based solutions. Those of us that have wanted to switch to apple would be content with and easy to use desktop environment that was fun to work with.

3) To compete with the Software Giant in security and reliability, Offer the ext3cow versioning file system as an alternative during installation. 4 Comments »

Sell IdeaStorm to corporate customers

IdeaStorm submitted by nosty2 05/24/07

Dell's IdeaStorm itself is a great idea that I am promoting my own company to implement. Since Dell has already built this, it should sell it to its corporate customers. I don't see why every organization shouldn't use this. 2 Comments »

[Dell completed this idea well] Explain why the media is reporting " Dell...systems with Ubuntu 7.04 installed...Windows desktop is significantly cheaper.

Dell, Linux submitted by jmxz 05/24/07

UPDATE: Dell explained it well in the comments to this Idea

The answer is most likely that the magazine probably got an incorrect price from a still-in-progress version of the web site.

The media is reporting that you are charging more for your Ubuntu systems than your Windows

http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/12396/1023/

Dell has announced three different systems with Ubuntu 7.04 installed: the XPS 410n and Dimension E520n desktops and the Inspiron E1505n notebook. However, those expecting lower prices for their Linux boxes may be disappointed because there is little or no price differential between the Linux and Windows models. In fact, the entry level E520 Windows desktop is significantly cheaper.

Scanning the internet I see many [conspiracy] theories:
  1. Perhaps: The author of the article is confused due to differences in the hardware they didn't notice?
  2. Perhaps: Windows has less than no cost to you because Microsoft pays you more (in co-marketing funds) than they charge you?
  3. Perhaps: Microsoft has a side deal with you making it in your interests to see your Linux options fail?
  4. Perhaps: You're pricing based on Value, not Cost - so of course the Linux ones would cost more?
To end lots of speculation and rumors growing on the internet- could you guys explain why the media is reporting that the "free" OS apparently is costing more than the "expensive" OS? 12 Comments »

Retractable powers cords

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by rr 05/24/07

Dell Should start making Retractable power cords attached to the adapter especially for note books. This will prevent the users from winding the power cord around the adapter and fastening it using the rubber strap\belt. 6 Comments »

All Dell Laptops should come with metal hinges

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by rajesh_rs 05/24/07

I have noticed that the Dell laptops are not as rugged as Lenovo or IBM Thinkpad. I would love to buy a Dell laptop which has metallic hinges which can hold firm and not vibrate when I am typing or moving my laptop around. 4 Comments »

Where'd the Windows E1505's values go?

Dell Web Site submitted by jmxz 05/24/07

When trying to compare the E1505N with the E1505, it seems the E1505 offers you have

http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_inspn_e1505?c=us&cs=19...

and the "Customize it" links take you to "We're sorry, but we are unable to process your request. The e-value code you entered is either incorrect, not eligible on the Dell Home & Home Office website, or has expired."

Hopefully this isn't because you're removing the good deals you had on Windows ones just to make the Linux ones more "cheaper" [1/2 kidding]. 6 Comments »
