Don't just install Linux but Also Support Linux

Linux submitted by barry5280 03/08/07

Not only should you install 5 of the top distributions but also help support and promote them. Take $20 for example of what you would of paid Microsoft and donate those proceeds to Ubuntu or which ever. You still come out better than if you paid microsoft and the Open Source Community can also continue what they are doing. This may still bother some people that want everything for free but I don't think most people that are requesting Linux would mind a $20 donation to the Linux Distributor to help the cause. A lot of these "Free" Linux distributions rely on donations, I've donated to my favorite distribution because I want to see it continue and prosper. Don't just pull an Oracle and undercut the Linux Distributor (Red Hat for Example). 1 Comment »

Drivers for Linux

Linux submitted by rgroses 02/26/07

I have been very happy with all of my Dell systems (4), but would be much happier with an easier adaptation to linux. I have installed Ubuntu on two of my machines, but have not been able to take full advantage of hardware because of the lack of drivers for printers, projection and wireless connectivity. The work-arounds are cumbersome and it would be a wonderful advantage to allow your customers the choices in OS that give us personal discretion about what we choose to use. The Open Source resources available today are a viable alternative to Microsoft bondage, and with the additions of drivers we could exercise our options freely. 1 Comment »

Provide Linux Drivers and Support

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Service and Support submitted by thomcmanus 03/02/07

More important than preloading Linux, if Dell provides open source drivers for Linux that would help a lot of users and corporations look to Dell for Linux / Open source solutions.

Some countries such as China, Venezuela, Peru, Germany are moving to Linux, if Dell doesn't provide Linux support IBM will. It's that clear.

Thank you for putting up this great website.

Which Linux to choose...

Linux submitted by nothanks 02/26/07

Dear DELL-Responsibles,
Now you want a preinstalled Linux, but cannot decide which one to choose, being scared by picking one to scare off supporters of another? Without thinking more than 5 minutes i have the following suggestions:

1. You can configure during the order with the linux of your choice (aka the biggest 5 or so distributions). Upside: The customer gets what he wants. Downside: High service cost.

2. You make once a set of 10 or more Live CDs/DVDs with different Linux distribution (that will be able to install) and deliver the PC without OS. Upside: Customer can try and choose and a one time cost creating the Live CDs/DVDs. Downside: Lesser capable customers will not be able to use the easiest install routine.

3. You put an extra 40-60GB HDD into your PCs preinstalling 5-6 major linux distributions. Making a possibility for the customer to choose a standard one when he has tried them. Uoside: Low cost. User friendly. Downside: Bigger HDDs needed. Comment »

Linux

Linux submitted by crimlawfed 02/28/07

Consumers should be able to chose whichever distro. of Linux they want. Dell should put a list of the most popular on their website. A consumer could choose between one on Dell.com or any other. 3 Comments »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Not Novell Linux

Linux submitted by derekj61 02/27/07

Novell Linux ?!?!? Don't you get it, we want to have unincumbered Linux on the boxes, Debian, Slackware, Redhat, even Ubuntu or Linspire. Not a Microsoft product. The next thing we know the widget that we develop on our shiney Microsoft/Novell Linux box is owned by Microsoft. 6 Comments »
