Do not scale back build-to-order systems

Desktops and Laptops submitted by masterr Apr 5 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Today in the news I read that Dell "is moving away from its build-to-order model to reduce costs. Dell is limiting the degree to which buyers can dictate specifications while expanding its line of prepackaged models". Please do not do this. The options build-to-order system is what sets Dell above some of the competition. By scaling this back and removing customization choices you remove some of the appeal of buying a Dell machine online. Please do not scale this back.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Idea: catch up to these guys implementing IdeaStorm Ideas faster than you

Dell, IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 07/19/07

Article about a new computer
that seems to have implemented many IdeaStorm ideas

$298 Wal-Mart PC features OpenOffice.org, no crapware

By Eric Bangeman | Published: July 18, 2007 - 05:00PM CT

Looking to get a jump on the lucrative back-to-school shopping season, Wal-Mart has begun selling a sub-$300 PC. ...

Cost aside, the two centerpieces of the Everex offering are the inclusion of OpenOffice.org 2.2 and the absence of crapware typically bundled with low-cost PCs. Including OO.org instead of Microsoft Office or even Microsoft Works allowed the PC manufacturer to shave a few additional dollars off of the PC's price, and according to OO.org marketing project lead John McCreesh, the open-source office suite passed all of Everex's tests "with flying colors."

Users accustomed to being bombarded with trialware offers and seeing their would-be pristine Windows desktops littered with shortcuts to AOL and other applications will likely be pleased at their absence from the GC3502. "In creating the eco-friendly GC3602, our main focus was to build a no-compromise, back-to-school PC with all the software applications a typical student would require, without resorting to bundling frivolous trial versions or increasing prices 30 percent," said Everex product manager Eugene Chang.

This Idea is that other vendors seem to be implementing the top-voted IdeaStorm Ideas (no crapware & Open Office) faster than you - and you could catch up with them.

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses..

  1. 147,808 - dhart - Pre-Installed Linux [and not just on a couple obsolete models in limited geographies]
  2. 127,719 - dhart - Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
  3. 107,313 - robinjfisher - Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
  4. 89,183 - ootleman - No Extra Software Option [only a couple models are crapware-free today]
  5. 78,007 - gergnz - Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
  6. 73,600 - agreer - No OS Preloaded [and not just on a couple obsolete models]

Vendas

submitted by joelneto 07/19/07

9 Comments »

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels

Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.

How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.

Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.

If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option.
In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Lease Option for Home Computers

Environment submitted by markflacy 06/08/07

Provide a lease arrangement for non-commercial customers who would turn in their system at the end of a 2 or 3-year term for a new upgrade. This would ensure that all equipment goes back to Dell for recycling, disassembly, reuse, etc. Dell would retain ownership of the equipment, like a leased vehicle, so that the customer would never have to deal with disposal, replacement of faulty equipment, etc. Customer would get a discount coupon on the upgrade upon turning in the old equipment.

Equipment could be returned to retail outlets (Circuit City, Best Buy, Fry's, CompUSA) with whom Dell has a relationship, and customers could pickup their pre-ordered new equipment at the same time, either a new lease or purchase. This would also eliminate much of the shipping packaging.

Or if the customer prefers, could have the new equipment shipped to their home and return the old equipment in the packaging from the new system. The customer would then receive their discount/rebate upon Dell receiving the old equipment. Comment »

Give us the ability to eject a disc from a laptop's drive when it is powered off.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by joeevil5000 06/06/07

I have heard a lot of people asking for a warning that you have a disc in your CD/DVD drive when you power it down. The best remedy for this is the ability to eject a disc even if the laptop is powered off. It would take an extremely minimal amount of power from the battery to pop open a disc drive. If the XPS M1210 can detect wi-fi networks with the power off, something like this shold be extremely simple. 7 Comments »

ReactOS

Operating Systems submitted by fireball 03/07/07

There have been a number of ideas for offerings computers with some flavour of Linux preinstalled, and that's great. But, there are customers, who would still want to have benefits of Windows (still the majority of software applications are targeted at Win32 API and .NET Framework, not to speak about drivers for various consumer devices).

Would DELL be interested in supporting a project aimed at creating a compatible implementation of Windows (the same architecture, API and ABI), but under a GPL license?

This would sound crazy if it's to be done from scratch, but we already spent quite some time for development and even came up with a few releases (they are more like proof of concept, not usable at the moment for preinstalling on PCs).

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Dell should make laptops that are designed to be modded

New Product Ideas submitted by couger 06/07/07

I think that if Dell went with the geek revolution of hackers and modders and used it to their advantage i think Dell could have a big seller. If Dell promoted that the laptop could be easily customized and personalized then some people could make their laptops look amazing. Dell could even have a competition for who could make theirs look the coolest. 2 Comments »

Get the basics right: fix customer support quality

Service and Support submitted by somdeb 06/05/07

One of the reasons my last three notebooks were Dell was because I could count on good quality at low costs. Also, the fact that I rarely had to call customer service is a testimony to the quality of the product.

However, a recent experience made me realize that Dell's tech support has slipped way below the standards I was used to five years ago. Suffice it to say it has ensured that I will not buy Dell even if it was a third of the price of the nearest competition. The experience is too long to reproduce here (http://replays.blogspot.com/ and http://www.epinions.com/content_5003124868 for the curious) but, after some research on the web, it seems that generic problems with Dell support are:

1. People cant understand their accent (I am Indian so I didn't face this problem)
2. The techs cant think outside of the manuals in front of them. Unless it truly is a forgot-to-plug-in-my-notebook type problem, it could literally take days on the phone with varying degrees of competency from tech support.

This is not a new idea but something that Dell needs to address immediately. Transferring calls to India is not an issue. American Express does the same and every time I have used them, they have resolved the issue in time and very efficiently. Implementing something similar is what Dell needs to do:

1. PAY them more. You cant expect them to do a good job if you are scrimping on cost. And if they do the job right, you will have to hire fewer of them so you could end up spending no more but have a highly efficient tech support team.

2. TRAIN them: to at least open up one laptop and put it back together without having to look at the manual. I spoke with the highest level of tech support (Customer Resolution team) and they thought that a plastic bracket was what needed to connect the hard-drive pins to the system board! I wonder if they passed high school physics.

3. Finally, please have them say their real names or a short version of it. When a south Indian tech claims he is "Charlie" and sounds more like "Subramaniam", he has lost a wee bit of credibility right there.

Would be great to see more ideas on how tech support can get better. I see this as a major area for improvement. Otherwise Dell will just keep losing their once faithful customers. 9 Comments »
