Make it easier to clean the Fans on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by pwl2706 Jul 10

It is very difficult to clean the fans on laptops...and the more dust that builds up over time increases the heat inside.

There should be either a way to open a couple of screws then pull or slide out the Fans so they can be 'hoovered' or cleaned with compressed air, or a software to make the Fan run in reverse mode that might clean it... 11 Comments »

Don't put the Dell logo upside down on the Mini Inspiron

Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 29

I didn't notice this last night as I was checking out the pictures of the new Dell Mini but it was pointed out by JamesWeb on Dell's "yourblog" that the Dell logo is upside down.

Please don't leave the logo like that, it looks bad. 83 Comments »

redesign your notebooks, its about time

Laptops submitted by playback 02/20/07

I´m using dell notebooks for more than 5 years and i´m happy with technical aspects, reliability, support and pricing so far. But as mentioned before your notebooks look and feel like cheap crap from the last century. The designer of my inspiron 8600 should be.... mmh, we don´t want to be personal here...

Let´s see what kind of notebooks are needed.
(Alltogether you almost have the right categories)

you need small sized notebooks for mainly business, communication + lifestyle
11",12" or 13,3" standard or widescreen
average to high pricing, normal and design models

for beginners, rare users (internet, office)
14" or 15" standard resolution
low price, simple materials

for the working e-life heavy user and gamer (programming, 3d, design, video, music, fotografie, gaming, internet, office...)
14" or 15,4" widescreen or standard, with high resolution option
average to high pricing; normal, design and rugged models

for the homecinema and desktop replacement user, gamer
17" or 20" widescreen
low, average, high pricing; normal and design models

In some of these areas you almost have the right thing e.g. your standard cheap 14" and 15,4" are propriate for what they are and the 20" portable dr notebook is even a nice design try. perhaps the xps 17" is also ok for the gamer.

But there is almost nothing for girls (yes they use notebooks, but not dell) and the big lifestyle community (yes i have to mention apple again, and they do windows now!!!), people who work on their own or in agencies, travel around the world, designing it. If they for the same price have the choice, they by something cool or nice.
As i belong to the fairly big community of heavy users who use their notebook on a daily basis for work (3d, design, fotografie, musicproduction, djing, communication and research) - and lifestyle (information, movie and audioplayback, a little gaming), i would appreciate to have a lightweight, small sized, high resolution, robust, nicely finished and designed notebook with long battery life . That sounds hard, i know, but i also would appreciate a useful audiodevice with at least 4 channel output and working drivers for wdm and asio with low latency (everything a dj wishes and needs to not use an additional interface that sucks energy and space)

lets make this a little more concret: for example this notebook could have
14" display with 1440x900 pixel resolution, non glare
(or 13,3" with 1280x800)
should be about 2kg weight (sorry i´m from good old europe)
give it the necessary ports like at least 3 usb, a 6 pin firewire (yes, the one with power) express card....
give it an option for onboard or dedicated graphics
a simple webcam
and a design of today
make it stable (brushed alu or carbon with kind of rubber corners)
perhaps a version with a kind of water and dust resistance
(dj´s and vj`s are often working under special circumstances)
give it a big or extra battery capacity

find a partner from the music industry like e.g. m-audio (digidesign) or echo or ...
and design a low cost but working audiodevice that does a semi professional job in audioplayback and integrate 4 (six if necessary for surround playback) outputs. Make sure these audiodevices are useable when plugged into the powersupply (i cannot use my laptop when plugged, because their is so much noise on the output, even with a professional audiointerface, that i have to use the accu: actually this should be a reason to give you back my laptop, my friends did ;-)).

On the big scale you are producing laptops it should be possible to develop all these aspects and still have a notebook for (far) under 2000$.

Take a good combination of an apple, asus, samsung and dell laptop and you almost have it.

If needed give me 2 to 4 weeks and i´ll send you a design concept in 3d.

Probably this won´t come early enough for me, because i will need a new laptop within the next year, but anyway it would be good to have a choice in the future.

Sorry for being so detailed, but all this is making me think for years now, because there was never the right notebook for me, even though apple and asus did it almost...and perhaps you already have it in your pipeline...

Thanks for reading and

Sell the m1630 16" Full 1080p XPS Laptop

XPS products submitted by sloc Feb 5

Sell the m1630 16" Full 1080p XPS Laptop as shown in CES 2008.

It should be shipped with in a custom special plain black sleeve.

Also make the touchpad larger.

Move the power button to the barrel (recessed) so the lid does not have to be opened to power the computer when it's plugged to an external monitor

add option to light the dell logo like the macbooks

Add Gigabit ethernet,

Quad core option,

12 cell battery,

integrated premium sound chip.

I would like to see a full black brushed finish model of the XPS line too. 3 Comments »

Implement an Option of an Intel Core 2 Extreme and a Intel Core 2 Quad processor and the new PENRYN processor on XPS 1330 and 1530 and a higher Graphics Card 8700gt or above

Sales Strategies, XPS products, Laptops submitted by bryan14c Jan 9

dell should implement a Core 2 extreme processor as an option for the XPS 1330 and 1530 and a first quad core notebook , because the high end models have this , why not on the 1330 and 1530 XPS is high end right? and also why stick to 8600gt that there is a 8700gt or above graphics card , well the XPS 1530 and 1330 overall design is great slim light, well as an addition dell should also implement a PENRYN processor

Dell, I assure you, your future customers don't want to wait months before its out on a Dell xps 1530,Frankly speaking, I dont even want to wait one week... (oh and for the xps 1330 fans you guys should also get the 9300/9500 real soon as well :))
Its great for performance but more important is the battery power you save - Think about how this is combined with the LED and the new Penyran processors and a 9 cell on an xps!!!! 13 Comments »

Dell should discuss the rumored ultraportable with us

Latitude products, Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jan 17

There has been much speculation about a leaked picture of a possible upcoming Dell ultraportable. Some say 13.3 inch others think it is 15" and some even speculate it is the 16" from the XPS they showed at CES. Upon magnification you can see it has the following visable: Slot load DVD, 2 USB, Ethernet and 2 other ports (display port and power?) on the left side. Also visable is built in web cam on the LED lit screen. It doesn't appear to have media buttons or a fingerprint reader.

The guys in marketing and developement must be getting sick of being scouped by Engadget and with all the flack they have gotten over the other recent releases (XT, M1330 and M1530). Why not create some good PR, scoup Engadget for once and find out some of the complaints while there is still time to tweak the system. Discuss this system Dell as it can only lead to a better product and greater buzz for it in the process. 46 Comments »

Put the 512MB Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT as an option for the XPS M1530

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by darthomer May 25

Put the 512MB Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT as an option for the XPS M1530 it is as big the 256MB card avalible right now but this one is 512MB and will make Games way faster and better looking than the 256MB card avalible. if Dell does this than the XPS M1530 will be one of the most popular laptops at Dell infact I think that the only thing I didn't like about the XPS M1530 is its poor GPU. The Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX is the same power but I didn't say that one because its too thick this one is like 4cm thick. it could add another $50 $100 $150 to this PCs price tag but its worth it

Blu-Ray Shouldn't Cost so Much

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by fgilley 09/04/07

With Blu-Ray being in competition with HD-DVD, and Dell supporting the Blu-ray option, the systems with Blu-Ray drives seem EXTEREMLY OVER PRICED. I love the idea of blu-ray, i have a Playstation 3 with a Blu-ray player, and the movies in HD look awesome, but i can't believe that a laptop with a blu-ray disk writer is so much.

Why cant you get a CHEAP system + Blu-ray

The only option right now is to get a HIGH END 2500+ system, and then ADD the blu-ray to that system making it 3000+ dollars!!

Wheres a Consumer Inspiron or Vostro notebook with good proc, mem, ect and a nice blu-ray? somewhere around the 1000 dollar mark.. ? *maybe 1500 dollar mark with the 1920x1200 display to view in HD, and hopefully avail in 15 inch not just 17 inch models?!* 19 Comments »

At least 2 HDMI or 2 DisplayPort connectors on each new Ultrasharp Monitor

Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by eaglewonj Jul 7

I have multiple devices feeding into my Ultrasharp 24" LCD. Both the PS3 and the Xbox360 elite can output best on HDMI. My current LCD doesn't have HDMI, but the new edition does. In my case it would still require a switchbox to toggle between the units. With some laptops and desktops outputting with HDMI, perhaps it would be a good idea to have multiple inputs of each. Same would go for DisplayPort. It would cover two computers for now or whatever other devices start to use it in the future. Not a critical feature, but it would be nice not to have to buy a switchbox to toggle the HDMI inputs before toggling to HDMI on the monitor itself. 3 Comments »

Bring capacitive touch controls to the next-gen Ultrasharp monitors

Monitors and Displays submitted by eaglewonj Jul 7

The buttons on the Ultrasharp monitor require a hard press and at times the button gets a little out of place and doesn't work. Its a low grade touch on an otherwise nice monitor.

How about that capacitive touch control system from the Dell Crystal, can we have that on the new Ultrasharps?

It would be an elegant touch for a very popular and high quality line of monitors. 2 Comments »

Buy a laptop, get free ipod SHOULD = buy a laptop, get free ZUNE

Advertising and Marketing submitted by chylag123 Jul 5

Dell could do more to target the college market. Apple is offering a promotion until September where ANY purchase of an apple laptop includes a FREE 8 GB IPOD touch for students. (www.apple.com for verification) I am attracted to the Studio series, and am impressed with the many improvements comparable with from the ibook pro (for example, backlit keyboards). However, a free IPOD touch blows Dell out of the water on comparable notebooks.

Also, Apple's student discount is ten times that of what Dell offers ($17 off at 10% of purchasing price from Dell vs. $182 off the least expensive systems listed at $999 from Apple.)

Dell is making it clear it doesn’t value it's collegiate business. As a repeat Dell customer, this is very disappointing. Please reconsider. 12 Comments »

Either improve battery quality or lower cost of additional battery

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by kumvjuec 03/29/07

I bought two Dell Latitude D620 just 8 months ago. Initially, the battery life was 3 hours. Now, battery lasts only 1 hour 10 minutes. While I was ordering my laptop, additional 9 cell battery cost $79. If I want to order it again now, you are selling it for $159.

This is double the cost I would have paid just 8 months back. Please do not overcharge your own customers. Your battery quality is quite low compared to others like IBM, HP and Gateway.

Batteries are a very important component of laptop and key mobility driver. Please, either improve quality of your batteries of charge decently to your own customers who have purchased your laptop just 8 months back and are back at you for want of another battery.

I would suggest that if your laptop customers order a spare part within the first year, please provide them the part at a reasonable cost. 3 Comments »

Matte (non-glossy) screen option on Studio laptops

Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 26

Please add the OPTION of a matte screen to the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops -- preferably to all of the available resolution and backlight versions. Glossy displays are a deal-breaker for me. 5 Comments »
