(Walmart sales related) You have to spend money to make money

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by jervis961 11/05/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Selling Dell computers at Walmart was a good idea but Dell needs to catch up on how to properly do it. Companies like Coke and Pepsi pay to get the prominent display locations inside retail locations. Those companies also have sales reps do the set up of the displays so they can be sure that it is done properly. We all know that if a product is highly visible and set up properly it is more likely to be purchased. Dell needs to spend a little cash and have Walmart show off the Dell systems this holiday season instead of only having them boxed up on the shelf hoping to be discovered. I have yet to see a Walmart in my area with an actual Dell system set up but see other companies products getting properly displayed.

Dell should post more Dell interview videos on Direct2Dell or Studio Dell.

Dell Community submitted by jervis961 11/05/07

Why should we have to scour the internet to find interviews like the following? Dell should just post it or give a link to the original site that hosts the video.

Produce a small USB connected Vista SideShow device

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jervis961 11/05/07

Windows Vista has the SideShow function that some companies are now incorporating into products. What about all the customers who would like to use this function but lack the money or need for a new system. Dell should create a few plug n play type small displays to fill their need. 7 Comments »

Bring the 22-inch SP2208WFP to the USA

Monitors and Displays submitted by coachcg 11/05/07

Please bring this beauty stateside and make available with desktop systems ASAP. I personally don't need the webcam, but it has other great specs and has the connectors/inputs a lot of us are asking for:

It's not out in the US yet, but Dell just announced another webcam packing LCD monitor: the SP2208WFP for Japan. This 1,680 x 1,050 resolution 22-incher features a 2 megapixel webcam and microphone integrated flush with the upper bezel, a 2-ms response, 2,000:1 contrast, and the ability to reproduce 92% of the NTSC color gamut. Inputs? Oh heck yes: analog D-Sub 15, DVI-D (with HDCP), 3x HDMI, and 4x USB. Japan-only for the time being for a tax-inclusive price of ¥59,800 or about $510 whenever it pops Stateside. They've also announced a ¥68,800 ($587) 24-inch E248WFP prepped for a Japan release on October 23rd. This 1,920 × 1,200 model increases the color gamut from the 72% found in their current 24-incher to the same 92% found in the new SP2208WFP. Rent-to-own/lay-a-way options

Sales Strategies submitted by kristymccoy07 11/05/07

Hello,
Let me start by saying how much I love Dell computers. I use them everyday in college and it seems that my college only buys Dell computers. I have wanted a Dell laptop for a number of years. I can never seem to qualify for your financing and I don't have enough money to buy a laptop. So my suggestion is maybe Dell can offer a lay-a-way plan. And what that could be is someone calls, or goes on-line to purchase a computer. They don't have the money to buy it outright so you guys would offer a lay-a-way option. What that would entail, is I would place my order for a computer, depending on how much the computer costs; I would then make a downpayment. Then every week, bi-weekly, or monthly that person would make payments until the account is paid in full. Then once the account is paid in full, then the computer would be built and shipped out to that person. If the account is not paid, or the person changes their mind you could charge a service fee for canceling (that way you don't lose any money) and it wouldn't take up production time because the computer does not get built until after the account is paid in full. This would be helpful for people who cannot afford a computer right off. I have spoken to a lot of people on this subject, and have people ready and willing to sign up, send in their money, make payments, and then get their computer once the account is paid in full. Please take your time in considering this option. Thank You! 4 Comments »

If you include a mic in a laptop, at least make it decent

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products, Laptops submitted by ratkeeper 11/05/07

I just got a shiny new M1330 and all the extras that are built into the laptop are great! BUT... the built-in microphone is so weak it's unusable. By the time it picks up anything close to my voice, I'm either screaming or about 3" away from the mic (which then looks pretty silly on the webcam) Comment »

UPDATE sound drivers Windows VISTA for Inspirion 9100 PLEASE

Dell Web Site, Inspiron products submitted by mikecintel 11/06/07

Can you please update the DRIVERS for my laptop Dell Inspiron 9100 and my sound is not working. There is sound BUT when I connect to the Internet it pops this message "Download and install the driver for Sigmatel C-Major Audio This problem was caused by Sigma Tel C-Major Audio, which was created by Dell Inc, A solution is available that will solve this problem" I am using a application and it has no sound when I preview but when I use it on another computer that is sound and Dell has to UPDATE their drivers for my laptop. The laptop can run Windows VISTA and there is no problems except for the sound problem that I am having. If you can update other software packages like the Intel Chipset or the Notebook system software I appreciate it. I download the sound driver from Dell's website and it says "Audio: SIGMATEL STAC 9750 AC97, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v.5.10.0.3952, A15". The release date is 1/22/2007 and I installed that sound driver and it does not work with an application that I am using. PLEASE FIX this.

Dell : heres how to come up with a cheaper computer

Dell, Desktops and Laptops submitted by agrawalavinash1 11/07/07

Dell /Gateway/Everex to come up with a cheaper computer that does not have default DVD or DVD-RW in their computers :
To request Dell/Gateway/Everex to come up with a the cheapest computer that you can tout as most economical($100-$300 range), that has:

a) No DVD or DVD/CD -RW
b) No lines to connect to printer, external displays
c) No dial-up modem
d) No unnecessary outputs etc at back of computer
e) Hard drive no more than 20Gig

Reason for above:
The computer would be forward looking. as (a) it uses the Internet for watching movies etc (hence no need for DVD or DVD/CD R-W), (b) it uses Internet for printing, it can upload files via Internet to print at Fedex-Kinko or Walgreens, (c) No dial-up model since it uses either DSL or cable, etc, (d) There are lots of unnessary pins at back of computer, they can be removed, (e) Since storage would be on Internet, Hard drive no more than 20Gig needed.

This is because, with online videos etc growing and storage of documents, spreadsheets etc stored online, there should be NO need to DVD, DVD-RW anymore. Also unnessarily creating DVDs harms the planet. This will also be cheaper for consumers.
But it does have good processing power and good network connectivity
Thanks,

Dell : heres how both Dell and economy can move forward greener

Dell : heres how both Dell and economy can move forward greener

Dear Mr Dell , I am very pleased with Dell's latest initiatives. I wish Dell encourage the following in both Corporate Dell and outside companies, and I will be more than happy to support. Here are the initiatives. Best Regards, Avinash agrawalavinash1_at_yahoo.com

From http://docs.google.com/Doc ?docid=dthcr25_40cg32m6&hl=en

Global teams Web-based Collaboration : I am surprised at the amount of redundant work being done within a single company, as different teams are not using web-based collaboration of documents, information, and end up reinventing the wheel again and again. So, putting up documents on common Sharepoint or other collaborative internal sites, should be enforced and measured every quarter and for each employee. And the use of Web2.0 will help in increasing global efficiency and productivity.

Working from anywhere : With oil at $96 per barrel, working from home or local Starbucks, will not only save costs but will also bolster the need for more Internet products and the economy. And will also reduce real estate needs. Most of the consumer cars gasonline is spent on traveling to/from work. Companies need to make this mandatory for employees (say working from home one day a week)

Green and clean planet: With the above two measures, we will also have a greener planet as we travel less, and reduce our dependence on oil. 1 Comment »

Offer Kubuntu as pre-install choice - as interface easier for customers familiar with Windows

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by dspain 11/09/07

Offer Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/) as pre-install choice on new Linux Dells, in addition to Ubuntu choice. It would make sense to offer Kubuntu version of Ubuntu to most people as the KDE desktop interface, as well as being easy to use, is a much easier transition for Windows users (I can attest to this being a long-term windows user myself). I find Kubuntu very intuitive and it is running faultlessly on my Dell Dimension 8400 (dual boot with Windows XP which I will probably ditch soon). I have spoken to a number of other people and many are moving towards the Kubuntu version – also loading Firefox as web browser and Thunderbird as mail client. 10 Comments »

Less plastic please on the XPS M1330 and other things

XPS products submitted by rach 11/09/07

I bought an XPS M1330 and got it delivered in September. My computer is 2 months old and now the painted silver parts around the frame are starting to discolour and showing black underneath it. I am not happy about this. I would like to see more magnesium on the next XPS 13.3 inch please. I would like to see an AL keyboard like on the Apple MacBook Pro.

Also while i am here lol if Dell could allow us to fully utilise the 256 of dedicated VRAM that the 8400GS card allows i would appreciate this as well. The Sony SZ offers a 64MB dedicated card and hybrid graphics. By offering more dedicated VRAM on the XPS products would be one way as well to help differentiate the XPS M1330 from such competitiors.

I would also like to see Dell offering 64 bit Vista/XP on the Dell XPS M1330. Right now users have to try and install this themselves if they want to fully utilise 4GB of ram.

I would also to see higher capacity 6 cell batteries as well. It seems to me that these Dell 6 cell batteries degrade to fast so i would like Dell to address this as well.

I also wouldn't mind to see swithcable graphics on the next XPS M1330 also.

Apart from that i am really happy. 1 Comment »

Sell the Vostro line @ Staples.

Sales Strategies, Small Business, Vostro products submitted by benjesuit 11/09/07

I was in staples today and noticed that the Inspirons with AMD processors were on display. Nice units BTW. Much nicer than what you see in the pictures online.

Staples is a business supply store. It would seem appropriate to sell Vostro's there also. Staples can handle the warranty repair issues the same way they purport to handle the Inspiron issues. 2 Comments »

Purpose-Built Computers (Appliances)

Simplify IT submitted by jordann 11/09/07 **REVIEWED**

Deliver to the customer servers that are already configured for their intended use.

For example, if they need a VOIP gateway, deliver a Red Hat Enterprise Linux server with Asterisk pre-installed and configured.

Certify these appliances with application developers prior to shipment.

Stop Calling Me During Business Hours

Sales Strategies submitted by aikiwolfie 11/10/07

There are two thing i want to ask for in this idea.

1) Stop calling me during business hours. Every single time I need to contact Dell you always call during business hours when I can't take the call. I could be sacked for taking calls on my mobile while I'm at work. It's not allowed!

2)Make the process of extending a warranty less painful. It should be an on-line process with no telephone call required. Nobody called when I bought the PC?

Recently I tried to extend the warranty on my Dell XPS 700. For some bizarre reason this can't be done on-line. It has to be done by a sales person over the phone. It could be because i refuse to use IE or it could be I was using Firefox + Ubuntu.

From the sales agents accent I'm guessing he was calling from India. I personally found him very difficult to understand and he found my accent similarly difficult to understand. I do speak fluent English as my first language. But I happen to be Scottish and even the English don't understand us.

When the sales agent called I had just left work. It was 3:15pm. I was on a crowded commuter train and had to ask for a call back.

I'm still waiting for the call back.

The sales agent also started waffling something about a photo printer. I don't need a Dell photo printer. I just need an extended warranty! 3 Comments »

Idea Teams

IdeaStorm submitted by dwood 11/10/07

We should be allowed to start "teams" of users that work together to form ideas that members can actively send ideas back and forth for editing and revision, or members send ideas only viewable by that team in order to get more refined ideas so that they can be better than 'rough' ideas that leave all of the kinks worked out (not in code, but in options in that idea)

one example of a "rough" idea would be this one. 18 Comments »

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.
