Dell should include AVG Anti-Virus Free as an option when customizing Windows-based computers.

Software submitted by twocows 05/12/07

Don't you hate virus trials? They work for 30 days and slow down your computer, and at the end of the 30 days, you uninstall them. Well, AVG offers a free Anti-Virus program called "AVG Anti-Virus Free." Dell should allow this to be an option to come pre-installed on any computer. 4 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Low Cost Computers

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by all4bg2006 09/07/07

First of all, I would like to say that the price of computers is really at an all-time low right now. I remember spending $2600.00 on a set of computer components not too many years ago to build a computer that was outdated in 6 months. I am glad that the competition has caused the market to bring prices down to an affordable rate for the average consumer. I wish the same could happen for gas prices - focus, back on track. That being said, I think there are ways that computers could come down more in price while still producing quality systems. My idea is not rocket science or even anything new - I say that there are open source options out there that "could" work for many people. For example, Open Office instead of Works or MS Office - that would save several hundred dollars alone - especially since OO is $0.00. The recent Ubuntu discussions and European release is a great idea; it isn't for everyone but it is an alternative. I would love to see Dell come out with a (this has been done before too) low-cost computer for schools that doesn't rely on a hard drive. There was a Linux project several years ago (in Linux Journal, I believe) where a CD-ROM based bootable disk contained the OS for the pc - the beauty of this was that there was no need for Antivirus software (because it was read only) - if updates were needed - burn a new ISO and make 100 copies and stick them in the computer. I am sure now there is a method to accomplish the same thing across the network - like a dumb terminal (sorry, thin client) scenario - still with no need for a hard drive and a single place for updates to take place. The Linux community would love to see some of these low-cost ideas implemented. I have also talked with Open Source companies that are more than willing to donate some of their products (customized products) to schools, non-profit organizations, etc. The possibilities are limitless in what can be done. 12 Comments »

Dells pricing needs to be more competative

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 09/06/07

My son is begging for a laptop, his current Dell Desktop is on its last legs anyway so I decided to look around. I can find a notebook for as low as $319.96 on sale at box stores and from $450 online from manufacturers. The cheapest Dell I can find starts at $549 and has worse specs than what I found elsewhere. I looked at desktops as well and the story is the same. I even checked the Dell outlet and they don't really even discount items that much there.

I'm trying to support Dell but they aren't really helping me help them. They need to be more competative with their pricing. 26 Comments »

Widescreen laptops are nifty for watching movies, yet they are rubbish for writing documents.

On selected laptops make it possible to rotate the monitor - like the picture below - to make it easier to work.....

New XPS 420

Dell Web Site, XPS products submitted by helmecj01 09/06/07

Hi all

have a look at the New XPS 420

http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/22/behold-dells-xps-420-revealed/
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=Tech_Talk_X...

Should anyone be wondering what Dell's got up its sleeve with its next-gen XPS system, here's the scoop: the XPS 420 will be appropriately bigger, badder, better equipped, and even have fun features like a hardware MPEG-4 encoder and SideShow display up top.

* Core 2 Duo, Extreme, or Quad (up to 8MB) processor options
* Intel X38 Express chipset, DDR2 800 (up to 8GB)
* MiniView LCD 3 x 2-inch QVGA display (runs SideShow on the front, picture after the break)
* Dell Xcelerator - dedicated media coprocessor for transcoding video streams to MPEG-4 formats. Can cut encode time on a 2 hour HD movie in half and use far fewer CPU cycles.
* SATA II (with RAID 0 or 1 support)
* PCI Express x16, gigabit Ethernet
* (2) front USB, (6) rear, (2) internal; one front and rear 1394; one eSATA, frontal audio ports

MiniView shot and details after the break.

Some MiniView display modes

* Default - shows time, date, month calendar, and system stats (including number of users connected)
* PC monitoring - Shows detailed system stats like CPU speed / temp, available RAM, fan speeds, and other info like Service Tag (so you don't have to keep that memorized anymore)
* Audio, video, or picture mode - controls media access and playback (duh) 9 Comments »

More RAM!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Premier.dell.com

Dell Web Site, Simplify IT submitted by tleavit 08/02/07

Ok, after a month of problems with it, I’m liking it now! Its a pretty good idea. After 2 years of having problems with my rep's ordering and shipping my Dell items to the right location, I can now control it. However a few things. Since I am not using the rep, I’d like to see added discounts. Currently, my discounts seem like they are properly discounted. I should receive another 1% for not taking my reps time (I have spent a lot with dell now, buying at least 2 PC's a week so it seems fair to me since I am spending more of my companies time. Id like to see more options. Throw in all models, not jsut limited to Business so we can also use it in an EPP way. Other then that, I’m happy with it. Comment »

Include nvidia and ati video cards in ubuntu laptops and desktops

Desktops and Laptops submitted by laptoplinux 08/02/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

When shopping for an Ubuntu Dell, I've noticed that it is not possible to order one with a video card from ATI or NVIDIA. For some users of Linux, such as those into 3D modeling work for artistic or scientific purposes, the Intel video card option may simply not be enough. And with laptops, upgrading or changing the video card is much more of a hassle than with desktops. Therefore, why is the option to buy a laptop with an nvidia or ati card listed under a Vista machine, but not under an identical machine pre-loaded with Linux?

Unfortunately, users that require both Linux and superior 3d acceleration performance may wind up forced into buying a Vista-preloaded Dell (and subsequently tossing the Vista disc in the garbage) just so they can have a Linux box with an ati or nvidia graphics card preinstalled. In addition to adding unnecessary cost to the consumer, this scenario will also distort sales figures information regarding Vista and Ubuntu.

Please consider offering Ubuntu-preloaded Dells with the option of an nvidia and/or ati graphics card preinstalled. Thank you.

Stop lying.

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 08/02/07

You just sent me another dead-tree-catalog full of "Dell Recommends Vista" on most pages; and practically everywhere I go on your web site I see it.

Yet the press reports that you guys are smart enough to hold off on deploying it yourselves no matter how strongly you "recommend" it to others.

Intel, Dell hold off on internal rollout of Vista
...
Dell has also not yet rolled out Vista internally, ..."We are pretty much in the same position as Intel within Dell," he said Thursday. "We knew we would roll out Vista internally faster than any other OS (but) if we are at the SP1 level it is going to be safer."
Please change your
"Dell Recommends Vista"
lies with
"Dell recommends holding off like we're doing internally".
on both your website and send print corrections to customers you lied with in print.

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses..

  1. 147,808 - dhart - Pre-Installed Linux [and not just on a couple obsolete models in limited geographies]
  2. 127,719 - dhart - Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
  3. 107,313 - robinjfisher - Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
  4. 89,183 - ootleman - No Extra Software Option [only a couple models are crapware-free today]
  5. 78,007 - gergnz - Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
  6. 73,600 - agreer - No OS Preloaded [and not just on a couple obsolete models]

Ordering on-line or on the phone

Service and Support submitted by bc45238 08/03/07

I recently placed an order for ink for my printer. I first went into the web sight but cancelled the order when you asked for my social security number to place the order. I then called on the telephone and again I was asked for my social security number. Do you not realize that giving out your social security number is a dangerous thing to do. Most places will settle for the last 4 digits, however, you insist on having the full number. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!! Unless you change your methods of security for an order I will be forced to purchase a different printer, one which I can go to a store and purchase my supplies. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR YOU TO INSIST ON PEOPLE GIVING OUT THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO THE MULTITUDE OF PERSONNEL YOU HAVE WORKING FOR YOU AS THEY COULD POSSIBLY COMMIT IDENTIFY FRAUD. AND I AM NOT WILLING TO GIVE IT OUT THE NEXT TIME I NEED SUPPLIES. I will check it out and if you still insist on the entire SS#, I will stop dealing with Dell. Thank you. Let Us Choose XP For All Machines!

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by shamarkaleo 07/26/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dear Dell Service Team,

After unsuccessful appeals to several levels of your support staff, I am writing to convey one last appeal regarding operating systems and purchasing options on your site.

I am the CEO of a small web and graphic design business. We decided to purchase a laptop for our staff use on trips, and after studying all our options, chose Dell as our computer supplier.

We were dismayed to find that most of the computer systems at Dell came pre-installed with Windows Vista, with only a few computers offering a choice of operating systems. Our computer of choice did not offer a selection.

I find this mindboggling, since Dell as a company won't use Vista on its own computers until after SP1 is released. http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39286949,00.htm?r=8

And CNET gives Windows vista this dismal review:

"...essentially warmed-over Windows XP. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade." http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/windows-vista-ultimate/4505-3672_7-32013603.html

What is more mindboggling to me is Dell's refusal to work with our company when we appealed for a change in our order. We wanted the specific machine we ordered, we simply didn't want Vista.

As it is, the only options we were offered were:

A.) Cancel our order- though we'd already waited weeks for the order to be fulfilled - and order a machine we don't want that offers the XP operating system choice

or

B.) Wait for our machine to arrive, then go buy XP ourselves at additional cost, reformat the hard drive, and install XP on our own.

These choices are horrible! Especially since one of your own staff told me by phone that Dell has received many, many complaints about Vista.

Neither option meets our needs. We either end up with a machine we don't want which has the right operating system, or a machine we do want that we must "fix" prior to use.

So I appeal to you to allow buyers to choose their operating system on ALL your machines, not just some. You don't have to offer a huge choice, but at least one more option than Vista!

Kelli Standish

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.
