Offer Windows XP SP3 when it comes out - now is the time to make sure Microsoft will let you.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 10/09/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Sounds like WinXP Service Pack 3 will be coming out soon.

Dell: Please remember who your customer is.

It's time for you to start making sure Microsoft lets you ship WinXP-SP3 pre-installed on Dells.

I believe Microsoft's current thinking is that they won't let you and want you to force Vista on your customers instead.

Why might one want XP-SP3? Well - XP-SP2 leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to security (even according to Microsoft's Vista PR); and Vista leaves a lot to be desired in general. XP-SP3 might be the most viable windows OS for businesses.

The most requested feature...

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by xivulon 09/26/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

There are several proposals that basically ask the same thing: SHOW UBUNTU IN THE LIST OF OPERATING SYSTEM ON ALL MACHINES [subtract $50]. And why not, add XP to the list as well. There are also many more proposals that would be made redundant IF the above was implemented. If you add them all together that is probably the most requested feature at the moment. Yes I think many of the ideas below can be merged.

...and many more...

Of course not all hardware choices will go down well with Ubuntu, but you have a conflict resolution system in place to notify users that make incompatible choices, and that could easily be extended to address conflicts between hardware and operating system. The only reason not to have Ubuntu is when there are fundamental incompatibilities that cannot be addressed by swapping wireless card or video card (suspend/hibernation...). In this case show "No operating system" (no point in having "No operating system" when a free operating system is available).

So, don't hide Ubuntu in some dark corner of your website only known to geeks, give customers a REAL choice...

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 23 Comments »

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Dell Laptops: No modem

Laptops submitted by tleavit 10/09/07

Specifically in my case Latitudes in businesses: Dell needs to remove modems as default hardware. Understanding that people out there today are actually still using them, for now it should be an option but I don’t think every laptop made needs to have one installed by default. Utilize the real-estate freed up on the back for something new such as HDMI video/sound or such. 17 Comments »

Dell Quick Set Plus Media Direct Button

XPS products submitted by arcorl 04/30/07

The Dell Quickset is a great utility for the notebook lines. It is a power utility if you happen to the lucky one to own an XPS system!

With Vista Ultimate I find the MEdiaDierct software and button useless. Is there a way to add a feature in the Dell QuickSet to allow cutoms to reprogram this button to load another application. For Example, Press the MediaDirect button to open MS Media Center.

Thanks,

Lock down accounts on IdeaStorm which vote for hundreds of ideas in under a couple minutes.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 10/08/07

Anyone voting for hundreds of ideas in under a couple minutes is not reading the ideas and really not voting as the sites use intended (TOU's), lock down those accounts till the java programmer can add a vote timer and not allow votes to happen so fast, as in a vote between ideas counter. I'd say at least two minutes between votes so the voter can at least read the idea and interpret it. 29 Comments »

Laptop keyboard with full size Ctrl / Alt / Space keys (no "win" keys)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by robot 10/08/07

Since the "win" keys are rarely, if ever, used intentionally, I would like to see an option that restores full size Ctrl, Alt and Spacebar keys. The "win" keys could be moved or just hidden underneath the larger Ctrl/Alt/Space keys. This would go a long way in avoiding typos when working on documentation. Everyone knows that the logo keys are purely for promotional purposes anyhow. My laptop is my primary work tool and needs to be optimal for that purpose. 8 Comments »

Make a dedicated '@' key on keyboards.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 10/09/07

Most keyboards I've worked on have the '@' symbol merged with the number 2 key. We all use @ a lot these days and I kind of think it's time that it was given its own key, or at least was in a more convenient location - closer to the shift key. The keyboard I am typing on now has two ridiculous 'windows' keys. What a waste. Why not make one of them an '@' key. At least then I'd press it now and again.

I also think the brackets should be swapped with the parenthesis, which are used a lot more....

Anywho......... 27 Comments »

Make Dell Quickset Firefox compatable

Dell, Software submitted by hazel 10/07/07

A while ago, I discovered the network profile option in Dell Quickset which allowed me to have the proxy settings in my browser automatically changed depending on what network I connect to. However, it only works with Internet Explorer. As I use FireFox, i'm sure you can image that this is not much use to me.

So, my suggest is simple: Make Dell Quickset also change the setting in FireFox. 2 Comments »

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.
