Silent Graphics Card Option

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by fahim.a.sabir 04/21/07

Hi,

Firstly, I think this is a great idea.

I recently bought a Dimension 9200 which included a GeForce 7900 which has fan that is really loud under Vista - so much so that when I put a passive 7600 in my machine, I could barely hear it.

I am actually quite disappointed as the machine was advertised as being cool and quiet. It is far from what I would describe as quiet and has forced me to spend a further £80 to get a replacement graphics card. The only reason I chose this particular card was because it was the cheapest one that gave me 2 DVI ports.

I have been given the excuse about fan control by drivers in Vista, and to be quite frank I don't care. Dell sold me the system, so I hold them responsible for any issues with it.

Please sort this out, these days - with the technology about, there is no reason for a computer to make any noise - I mean Apple computers are silent.... Comment »

Free Anti Virus and Firewall Preinstalled

Software submitted by cisherwood 04/21/07

I know of many people who have no clue about computer security. Even though I know all about this stuff, I can't be the IT technician for all friends and family.

I know Vista has improved on security features, but, since Dell already bundles software with new computer, why not bundle something useful? I know either McAfee or Norton Internet Security suites are bundled, but these are trials. Most people I know have not purchased a subscription after the trial subscription ended.

So, why not load free security software that automatically updates and scans, such as AVG Free Anti Virus and Zone Alarm Firewall Free Edition? I use that on all of my computers, and since then, I have not had one malware problem.

I know many people are against preloaded 'crapware' - I am, too. But security software that actually works is not crapware, it's necessary. Yes, give people the option to not have it included w/ their purchase, but explain that the program will NEVER expire, and explain all of the benefits. 4 Comments »

Improve customer relationship based on language skills

Service and Support submitted by mauricio_martins 04/21/07

Reading several messages in IdeaStorm, I'm surprised with the lots of complains from customers that is not satisfied with support online due lack of language skills.

Dell should choose its best foreign language speakers to deal with those (foreign) native language speakers.

Customers from UK,US, CA that will call for support, will have their calls routed to those "best" speakers of english. And so on (to Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese...)

The impact of this approach is simple: customers will be satisfied since at other side of the line there will be someone that understands and make clear conversation without no changes to the company. The employees will be responsible to achieve that grade in proficiency... 2 Comments »

"Trade In" Program

Advertising and Marketing, Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by john_saddington 02/19/07

I'd love to see a "Trade In" Program and/or initiative, where a customer who's been a long time customer could trade in an old system for a new one, or at least, a good sized discount.

I've got an old laptop and seriously need a new one. It's been out of warranty for a long time, but, would love to get a discount for a new one if I could trade it in.

This would also be environmentally healthy! 34 Comments »

Sell software services

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by mauricio_martins 04/21/07

In technology Dell has a big team that help companies get the maximum of their computers if Dell provide consultancy on software services. Not only in support. Sell computers and do advices/change broken hardware is too efemeral.

I like to put examples in questions:
- What is the best to a webserver? Use a 2850 or a 6650?
- I'd like to upgrade my systems... which model offers cost and benefit to what I need? Which model is more reliable to use XYZ database server? Comment »

Maintain a minimal stock for immediate delivery

Service and Support submitted by mauricio_martins 04/21/07

Dell should maintain a minimal stock of the most popular computer models in order to promote immediate delivery to the customer.

This stock would be made of a set of preset, not changeable configuration obeying the current trends in the market just to attend those customers that can't wait 15,20, 30 days to receive a Dell Computer.

This won't hurt the direct model. Since dell will not be using resellers. It will be a new line of products with high volatility. 3 Comments »

XP Is A Better OS Than Vista - Vista Is Only An Income Generater

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by lancelot9201 04/21/07

When M$ relieased Vista, before HP even had a chance to develop drivers for their $500 laser printer, they did so in order to recoup some of their 5 yr. investment..
No other reason, its not a better OS.. Bill was only concerned with profit, not his customers.. Please expand your offering of XP to all desktop & lapton models.. 1 Comment »

$399 OS (Vista), What Are You Nuts..???

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by lancelot9201 04/21/07

I couldn't believe it but I did see Vista Premium or maybe Business for $399..
How does M$ expect their customers to spend that kind of money & then add
another $200 in hardware just to make it work.. Crazy If You Ask Me.. XP is proven & until M$ helps their 3rd party vendors get their act together & put out some drivers Vists shouldn't even be offered.. anyone who buys Vista just because its the newest OS is nuts.. I'd buy An Apple with OS X first.. Besides the lack of security issues that plaque M$ you'd get proven reliability... Anyway, Dell please don't let M$ bully you into selling something you know isn't market ready & continue to offer XP.. 1 Comment »

RAID 1 option on more models

Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage submitted by samari7 04/21/07

Would like to see RAID1 on Dell's XPS 410 and not have to buy an XPS 710 with features I don't need. Also would like to see RAID 1 with 10,000 rpm hard drives (with adequate cooling) to compensate for some reduced speed in usuing RAID 1. Comment »

Port Adelaide destroys Collingwood at the G

Advertising and Marketing submitted by steveoc 04/21/07 **NOT NOW**

Port Adelaide silenced the critics and destroyed Collingwood at the G on saturday. Port, which has been in the competition since 1870, is famed for wearing the black and white 'prison bar' uniform in the SANFL. Port Adelaide is also famed for having won more premierships than any other team in the comp.

However, when it comes to the 'heritage round', Port is not allowed to wear it's famous uniform, unlike every other team - simply because Collingwood now uses black and white. There are many existing precedents where other teams are allowed to wear their true heritage uniform despite the fact that contemporary teams also have these colours - Collingwood's black and white is somehow an exception to the rule.

On the field of combat, Port ran the legs off Collingwood this weekend, and marked up another historic victory ... proving who the true champion team is .... but nothing will move the parochial powers that be and allow Port to wear their true colors on heritage day.

Cutting a long story short - my idea is that Dell should use it's potentially huge clout to lobby the AFL to allow Port to wear the black and white prison bars during the heritage

Offer HighResolution screens for your consumer Laptops as you do for the business Latitudes

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by rseibel 04/22/07

Please offer the highresolution screen for you consumer Inspiron and XPS laptops as an option as you do for the business line of Latitudes. It is not much more effort, but makes them much more attractive.

Now you offer 1280x800 i.e. 1 Megapixel aka. WXGA Resolution on 15,4" screens of your Inspirons, that might be fine for some people. But it is not appropriate for others like me.

I suggest to offer 1400x900 i.a. 1,26 Megapixel aka. WXGA+ or even 1680x1050 i.e. 1,76 Megapixel on your 15,4 " screens that is 26% respectively 76% more usefull screen space.

You offer higher resolutions for your Latitude laptops, why not for the regular user also? Apple is using HiResolution screens also..

Pros:
- One have more space on ones desktop and can be more productive by using the applications more effectively such as office, photoshop, movieediting, mindmaps etc.
- Your screen is fit for HiDefinition movies coming to the market now.
- Windows Vista has a vector based graphic user interface able to scale fonts appropriately and should be made able to adjust them as the user demands.

Cons:
- Sure it is more expensive to produce/assemble, but I am willing to pay some extra $ for that.
- The fonts might be too small for some people, but there is a solution for that with Vista.

Just an idea, fell free to comment! 6 Comments »

Delluniversity Student Shop for Europe!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by rseibel 04/22/07

Please offer a student laptop shop for europe with discounts for the one who need them to write papers, do research and spend much time with them studying.

The delluniversity shop is great you have a big market waiting for you in europe.
Find a way to cooperate with the universities, you maybe already deliver products to them.

It is not possibel to get student discount as easy as in the US in Germany for example.

I have to go to https://www.academic-center.de/cgi-bin/pages/dell_notebooks to get an account custimize, than they will order one for me.

- Almoust no one knows about this possibility, you have to google for a while.
- You still have an intermediary ordering the Laptop for you it is not direct, it is not dell philosophy...

Try it in a country you suppose you can earn most, than move to the others, it is worht it.

Please fell free to comment. 1 Comment »

Anticipate the next step

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by lysglimt 04/22/07

Anticipate what customers are going to want next with their hardware.

Are they going to upgrade with a new harddisk?
- Then write a simple IKEA-style manual for that on the inside of the PC casing.
Anticipate what they will need and write how to get it.
Suggest a number of the part they will order.

- Are they going to upgrade their memory?
Say something about that.
Colour code the inside of the computer for more easy fixes of customers themselves.

Look forward 5-10-20 years. 1 Comment »

How to improve MARKETSHARE

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by trajan2050 04/22/07

Dell needs to return to its ORIGINAL MODEL with a cleaner, easier to naviagte web site, the most options for the newest and best technology, and aggressive coupons and sales. All three of these areas are weaker than they were two years ago. Dell dominated before some marketing or sales guy decided to complicate the website, and try and sqeeze more dollars out every sale. People can add and HP stepped in and took advantage of Dell's mistakes. Less for more is not a winning combination when the competition is so highly motivated. The marketshare numbers speak for themselves. 1 Comment »

Bring back CRT monitors as an option

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by gadump 04/22/07

Please bring back the option of buying CRT monitors with high-end desktops. Preferably 21' or better. I know most buyers want flatscreens, but they're not right for everybody. Call it a premium item if you like and charge accordingly, I just want the choice. 23 Comments »

Let the users (buyers) design

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by lasseid 04/22/07

It could be fun to let the users actually participate in the design (look) of new products. With modern (or soon to come) production methods like rapid manufacturing (3d printing), every product could be unique. By letting the customers choose design like they choose components, you could have a really unique product...

As a part of a school assignment at the institute of design, Aarhus school of architecture), I have made an example of what such a configurator could look like. Here it's a bluetooth headset, but it could be computers and pda's also. The reason for using headsets as a case story, is that there are a limeted number of parameters...

The configurator: www.custom.lasseweb.dk

Please try the configurator, and post a message, som I can keep improving it.. 1 Comment »

Automatically include carbon offset credits in computer price

Environment submitted by madmax_br5 04/22/07

Analyze how much carbon is produced for the lifecycle of a Dell product (manufacturing, distribution, usage, and disposal/recycling). Then, find out how much it costs to offset all of this carbon by purchasing carbon or clean energy credits (means that this money allows other people to afford green power by subsidising the cost compared to conventional power, and it works great because you can't get green power everywhere, so this helps where it can).

Then just add this cost onto the base price of the machine and be done. No asking if someone wants to pay extra, just add it on. That way, every computer Dell ships will be nearly carbon neutral (then you can advertise this as well).

Also, use less plastic, and try using bioplastics made from scrap wastes of corn and other organic materials. These bioplastics do not involve petroleum, biodegrade (slowly, not within the lifetime of the product).

And how about a completely modular laptop chassis? That way, you can buy ONE laptop and keep swapping the internal and external components as needed, without having to buy an entirely new laptop, which is a waste of resources and money (not to mention, the high initial cost restricts sales). Old modules, once upgraded to newer ones, would be traded in and used as parts for low cost, educational computers. You would get a credit/discount for returning old parts to encourage less waste.

And for goodness sakes, environmentalism is stylish! Hire an industrial designer with some taste, stop looking like you're cranking out computers stolen from a cylon vessel. No stickers, no two-tone faux chrome and black plastic, no boxy edges, jutting ports, utilitarian vent holes, creaky keyboards, lathes, doors, ugly power adapters. Keep it simple, clean, and green. 1 Comment »
