Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Sell Linux PCs Worldwide - not only the United States

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ergo 05/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell has now decided to sell computers with Linux pre-installed. GREAT MOVE! But for the moment, it only concerns the US... Here outside the US, we can't wait to buy a pre-installed Linux Dell PC! Please sell Linux PCs worldwide!

Check out the details on Dell Linux systems worldwide!

More RAM!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Customer Oriented Payments

Service and Support submitted by soul007 03/29/07

Have your payment options more centered around the customer instead of centered around squeezing more money out of them with a system stacked to make it hard to pay / pay on time, for example, the amount of time taken to process a payment thus making it more likely to be able to charge a late fee. Also, payment online is somewhere between non-existant and extremely un-userfriendly, combined with the additional 10 to 20 dollars to make a payment on the phone is the primary reason i would never again buy a dell, the language barrier between myself and the call center 'help' would be the secondary reason, fyi :)

on the other side of things, the idea storm is a very good idea, kudo's. Comment »

Licenced DVD playback on Linux like IBM & Toshiba & Lenovo computers have

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell, Linux submitted by jmxz 03/29/07

DVD playback involves some licensing issues that windows software providers usually deal with for the customers. These involve licenses for DVD playback related IP from MPEG-LA, Dolby, The DVD Consortium, and DTS.

CyberLink and Intervideo, the two leading software vendors for Windows DVD codecs also have Linux codecs as well:

IBM's T22 ThinkPads used LinDVD (from the makers of WinDVD):

These links have more on LinDVD from InterVideo, and Linux DVD from Cyberlink

Intervideo's InstantOn which powers Toshiba and Lenovo notebooks are also powered by LinDVD.

Could Dell work with one of these vendors (you already work with them on the Windows side) - or perhaps directly with the DVD IP consortiums - to ensure we have legally licensed DVD playback for Linux machines as well?

[edit - fixed some links because InterVideo's web page got incorporated into Corel's when they got bought] Comment »

Laptops using core 2 Duo PC (E instead of T)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tleavit 03/29/07

In the same way that in the past you could buy laptops which had the full processor versions of the Pentium 4 (instead of the Pentium M) processors. I would love to be able to purchase a Latitude with the 2.6ghz dual or quad core desktop processors. Proc's such as the E6600 and E6700. Especially for the Vista option. I currently aquired a Latitude D820 core 2 duo T7400 2.17 ghz with a 7200 RPM drive and 2 gigs of 667mhz DDR2 ram and Vista just hammers it. Sure the battery might take a hit, but for people like me who may only take it on the road 1 day a week, it should be an option. 2 Comments »

Either improve battery quality or lower cost of additional battery

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by kumvjuec 03/29/07

I bought two Dell Latitude D620 just 8 months ago. Initially, the battery life was 3 hours. Now, battery lasts only 1 hour 10 minutes. While I was ordering my laptop, additional 9 cell battery cost $79. If I want to order it again now, you are selling it for $159.

This is double the cost I would have paid just 8 months back. Please do not overcharge your own customers. Your battery quality is quite low compared to others like IBM, HP and Gateway.

Batteries are a very important component of laptop and key mobility driver. Please, either improve quality of your batteries of charge decently to your own customers who have purchased your laptop just 8 months back and are back at you for want of another battery.

I would suggest that if your laptop customers order a spare part within the first year, please provide them the part at a reasonable cost. 3 Comments »

Missing sales opportunity

Sales Strategies submitted by jackshamilton 03/29/07

HPQ does online sales just like Dell, but they also take advantage of a very key other method of sales, Retail stores like Best Buy, Circuit City and other big electronic stores.
This gives HPQ a double barrelled advantage over Dell in that many shoppers like to see and touch what they buy, before they make a decision. They like to talk to store experts about details about PC's and what would meet their needs. I see lots of Lenovo's and HPQ laptops flying off the shelves at these stores with no Dell presence at all.

Dell needs to change, and this is just one way to gain market share in an area were Dell shows no presence. 1 Comment »

English keynames on non-English keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by steve2 03/27/07

With non-English beginners, who get their advice from help files or internet forums, there is often the problem, that they are told to use the "Ctrl" key and cannot find it because that key is named differently, for example "Strg". So my suggestion is, to write the English names of the keys in brackets onto the keys, so that for example on a German keyboard the Ctrl key would be labeled "Strg (Ctrl)" instead of just "Strg"
On a related note, always paint some kind of window on the "windows" key, even if the keyboard is for a pure linux machine (You can paint a penguin next to it). The reason for that is similar to the above. The name "Super key" is not widespread enough. 1 Comment »

Weak screen to laptop anchorage

Laptops submitted by ruben 03/30/07

The system to fix the screen to the laptop is pretty weak. If you are working on a vibrating environment (p.e. engine room) screen moves ahead-aster couple cm's.
Also when you open and close or just want to move the screen to another position feeling is not good. Try to move a Apple powerbook screen... it is soft and smooth and very stable.

Please try hard on this! Comment »

Do it Right, Advertise Linux on your site don't bury it

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by barry5280 03/30/07

Use some of the cool animations etc that are available to attract new Linux customers, don't just bury it in a hard to find spot on your website. A lot of people want it and will look for it but others need to see a virus free, spyware free option is available. Keep it available and Flashy to grab attention of new customers. Don't let a website design flaw kill the potential for a good movement. Comment »

SOFTWARE Support from Dell ... is it NEEDED?

Service and Support, Software submitted by phubert28 03/30/07

This article on the Register refers to Dell's plans to offer the public systems pre-loaded with Linux, with the software supported by the community.

Our site has standardized on Microsoft and Dell. We typically order servers with Gold support and, to my knowledge, have NEVER called for SOFTWARE support. We get our software support from the software VENDOR.

So, whenever I call Dell support with a HARDWARE issue, I'm asked questions about my operating system and software issues.

I don't know how others use Dell support, but I find it a bit mystifying that anyone would WANT software support from their HARDWARE vendor!

When we had an IBM mainframe or Stratus or Tandem minis (LARGE minis), the hardware vendor WAS the supplier of the operating system and utilities. Naturally, there we received software support, if needed, from the software SUPPLIER.

I think Dell needs to re-think its support offerings in general. I suspect there are many who would never even consider going to Dell for Windows support on their servers (or, as in our case, even on our workstations and laptops!) 6 Comments »

Reduced price for Linux PCs

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ms602 03/30/07

First off, I want to thank Michael Dell for returning to the head of the company, and doing what he does best - listening to customers. There has been much talk recently, and even press attention, about Dell committing to preinstall Linux. So my ideas are as follows...

1) Offer preinstalled Linux on machines - this isn't a new idea. As previously noted, it would be great if Dell would support, say, the top 5 Linux distributions, configured out of the box with drivers that support the hardware. Word is that Dell has already decided to do this. RH, Suse, and Ubuntu, would be nice at least.

2) Offer a reduced price for Linux machines - Many have noted that Linux reduces the cost of a machine, but haven't requested that the price of the machine fall in line with the cost differential. The whole point of buying a Linux machine is to lower the price. If Dell were to include a license of Windows Home Basic edition, but install only Linux, it defeats one of the purposes of Linux. Microsoft should not be enriched upon every machine sale, regardless of Windows inclusion. There's just something totally wrong with that agreement... The difference in the incremental cost of adding a license of Windows should be the same incremental difference in price. Dell should not play Microsoft's game of licensing copies of Windows on all machines. If MS wants to charge more for not licensing all machines, go ahead and do it anyway, so that the market can naturally make a choice between Windows and Linux. Linux critics complain that Linux hasn't caught on because it isn't demanded. Lower the price, and you'll see the demand. If the price is the same, even a Linux user has an economic incentive to buy the machine with a Windows license, because she is getting the benefit of a copy of Windows at no cost above the Linux PC. One last suggestion, if a Linux PC buyer changes her mind about Linux after the sale, and wishes to use Windows, provide an easy way for her to buy a copy from Dell and easily install it as if it were done by Dell itself. 4 Comments »
