Bring back DVI and better video card options on the Inspiron/"Vostro" line.
Inspiron products submitted by adorettic

The removal of a DVI port on all of the Vostro / Inspiron line is ridiculous. While the rest of the world is moving towards DVI dell is moving away from it. Also bring back the options for DX9 cards on these laptops because the current dx10 offering is worse than the card I bought on my Inspiron 9300. Leaving the DVI port only on the XPS laptops to force people to buy them is a really shady practice. Some people don't want to spend double the money of an inspiron 1520 or 1720 on an xps system to be able to play games playable on a 3 year old system.

Better selection of Linux notebooks
Linux submitted by kasoroth
08/07/07
An Ubuntu notebook with higher specs would be nice. At a minimum, I'd want a decent monitor option (1920x1200 resolution), a decent NVIDIA video card option, and gigabit ethernet. I'd also prefer an AMD processor, and a price point about $50 less than an equivalent Windows system.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood
08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!
Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057
08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.
I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

All possible options should be available via the website
Dell Web Site submitted by steve0073
07/27/07
On the Dell website, many options are not available. But they are available when ordering by phone. For example, the Inspiron 1720 can't be configured with an 7200rpm harddrive, but it can be ordered with such harddrives by phone (yes, I asked).
Now, this is what I don't get: Every person who wasn't asleep during the last 20 years can tell you that taking orders by phone is much, much more expensive for a company than taking orders via a website. Orders by phone take time, use up expensive human resources. You maybe need to hire more people for this, and the already hired ones are stressed out and don't have the time for real special cases where they would be really needed. And they maybe even forget to call you back because they're just too busy (yes, happened to me twice now). That adds up to more costs and bad customer service. If you would allow configuring everything on the website, you would have a lot less people calling your customer service.
So please Dell, provide all the possible options directly on the website so we can order what we want/need much easier and with less stress, and less cost for you.

Universal Notebook Power Adapter
Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by slateslate
08/24/07
1. I've owned Dell Latitudes and Inspirons since 1998. 2. Your power adapters have a life expectancy of 12-18 months under daily mobile use. It is annoying for have these adapters fray. 3. Subsequent generations of notebooks each have unique adapters. Make all adapters the same after this generation of notebooks. So that should one power adapter fray, I can swap with another Dell adapter even if it's from a different notebook model.
OR
1. MAKE YOUR POWER ADAPTERS LESS PRONE TO FRAY AT THE END WHERE THE ADAPTER MEETS THE COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More detailed hardware specs when building a computer
Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by bbr

Like a number of other users, i like to mix and match a system, but with the ease of a system put together by dell.
Show per component what the detailed specs are. So we know what we're getting, perhaps there are equal quality components, for a lower price available, perhaps users want different hardware.
I could see this being difficult however, since you could go to a hardware store, buy 1500 Euros worth in loose components and end up with a computer equal to a 2000 euro dell system. More detailed component specs however will never hurt anyone though. what's the refresh time of the monitor, size and manufacturer of the HD, buffer, ram size, bus speed, clock speed of the video card. etc.

Dell Mobile Workstations Need Numeric Keypads M90/M6300
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Precision Workstations submitted by pauln

Dell needs a numeric Keypad on "Mobile Workstations" M90, M6300 types. HP has had a numeric keypad for a While on their mobile workstations. If these are oriented towards CAD applications, then give engineers (who deal with numbers daily) what we need, a numeric keypad and utilize some of the wide open space on this 17" notebook. It wouldn’t cost much more and for the price they should give us what we need. It’s not like they have to invent one for notebooks, they are already being made! Also allow us to turn off the touch pad so it doesnt get bumped when using the keyboard, we use a mouse and 3D motion controllers to navigate our applications!

Vertical Docking Station for Laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by forgueam
08/29/07
Most Dell docking stations that I have used force the laptop to sit flat on my desk, with the cables all shooting out the back. This eats up valuable real estate on my desk, especially considering that once the laptop is plugged into the docking station, I don't need any interaction with it.
I would love to see a docking station that allows the laptop to stand vertically, such that I could place it behind my monitor and save tons of space on my desk. Ideally the laptop would stand vertically and the cables would come out of the docking station perpendicular to the laptop, thus forming an "L" shape. If done correctly, I would be able to dock/undock easily and still have access to the CD drives if need be.

Offer 8400M GT on the XPS M1330 not the current GS Version!
XPS products submitted by tolkan

The Why offer the GS Which is much weaker than the GT Version. By offering the GT version the M1330 would be the best of performance and work. Considering that the 8400M GT is referred to as an under clocked 8600M GS. I really want to purchase the XPS M1330 so please Promote this. If there is currently another idea on this topic please do tell me so i can promote.
Thank You In Advanced... -Tolkan-

Dell is in a dire need of a COMPLETE image refresh
Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by mentalman1369
08/15/07
Dell is in a dire need of a COMPLETE image refresh. Dell needs to completely change the way the general public view their products and services (the only way Dell can repair the damage it has taken to its customer base). Current opinion of computer users, from casual users to enthusiasts, regard many Dell products (notebooks especially) as ugly, cumbersome beasts. Many users find the sole reason they but a Dell is for its low prices and value. But even this reason is fading, as price-drops from competitors force buyers to consider other brands and deter users from Dell's sometimes truly ugly designs. Modern consumers now pursue sleek and elegant designs in almost everything they buy, and this applies to computers. Dell must re-innovate and redesign their computers to rouse the attention of ALL computer users (the new Inspirons look a little better due to their colour, but their fundamental design is still cumbersome and "brick"-like). This way, customers will choose Dell products to others because of its desirable looks AS WELL AS its low prices and understated customer service. Dell has the ability to engineer amazing products which have great functionality and practicality, but if the presentation of these products is not up to scratch, people will dismiss what lies within. The XPS M1330 is a great first step (including adding small extra touches such as the remote, fingerprint reader, touch controls and WLED screen), and Dell MUST continue this trend of designing objects of pure desire if they wish to become market dominant (and even adding more, like backlit keyboards, adaptive display brightness, etc.). Dell cannot seem to be lagging behind other companies in product aesthetics (adding different colours to laptops simply ISN'T enough to attract the attention Dell needs and deserves), for this is what general consumers see representing company. Dell needs to start imitating other companies who are promoting their products by making everything to do with their company and products attractive (though using spin doctors similar to those employed by HP (who create laughable and senseless adverts) is NOT recommend). However, it is important that new computer designs DO NOT compromise on functionality or integrity of the product (e.g. cases should be strong but still attractive (problems like the M1330 paint debacle must first be overcome, of course)). It is imperative that Dell improves on the way they project themselves to the general public (a good recent example is Jeff Clarke's outfit while unveilling Dell's new amazingly thin Latitude tablet (a professional business unit): that outfit really isn't great for Dell's general image (even if the video won't be view by the general public, and no personal offense intended, Mr. Clarke)). Dell should unify the image of its products and services, designing sleek and elegant computer cases, advertising its excellent customer service and promote itself in a more prominent way, such as opening more Dell Kiosks, a new logo and the like.
Dell, it's time for action!

Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)
Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.
With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...
Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...
The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.
Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*
Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o
* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi.

KEYBOARDS and TOUCHPADS Enhancements
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by labtroll

Fancy keyboards. A nice plus on laptops and desktops!
Some possible keyboards for both laptops and desktops: 1)BACKLIT Like the Mac Pro (Great when working in low light... not everyone can type without looking) 2)LCD/OLED Customizable Keys (even if its just a few for custom keys and launching)
Touchpad: 1) Back-Lit Touchpad (LCD and customizable would be the best!) 2) Vista's handwriting recognition is great (one of the few features I felt really improved) Touchpad area can double as writing pad with special pen.
I Will pay extra for it!
Lastly: Combine keyboard and Touchpad for the Media center keyboards! no space.. leave the keypad out and use a touchscreen keypad/touchpad combo. Expensive... so are the High end Media Centers. What's an extra $50-$75 for a real media center keyboard.
