Let customers choose what trialware/demoware to pre-install to subsidize their machine.

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by jmxz 04/19/07

Many people understandably complain about third party software on Dells (it's one of the top rated items on ideastorm).

Many people also respond by defending this software pointing out that it subsidizes the cost of the machines.

And perhaps show it in a "optional trial / reduced functionality software" section like this:

McAfee Trial - (subtract $10)
Norton Trial - (subtract $15)
AOL trial - (subtract $20)
MSN default search engine (subtract $20)
Microsoft Works - (subtract $100)
on your purchase pages.

That would give people who don't want the hassle of the third party windows software ways to avoid it; and it would give power users who don't mind it and know how to uninstall/avoid it the benefit of the cheaper subsidized machine.

Personally I would get them all -- yes, including Norton and Macafee and any other antivirus programs - because the first thing I'd do is remove Windows from the machine anyway. But it would be interesting to see if I can get a machine sufficiently cheaper that my savings would offset the time it would take to install Linux vs the presumably higher cost of buying a less subsidized pre-installed Linux machine. 9 Comments »

Support Engineers that speak English

Service and Support submitted by scottgreer 04/19/07

Why is it so hard for Dell to hire call center employees that speak fluent, clear English? It, on average, doubles the length of a call (and my frustration) getting assistance on any issue. I can't imagine that it would cost so much to move those call centers back for all customers. Comment »

Sponsor a Dell Employee Today

Service and Support submitted by captainsensible 04/19/07

(like Jervis's Dell Members Club..but with a twist)

Thousands of technicians in desperate need of help are waiting for someone like you.

Which is why your support is so vital. As a Dell Technicians's Fund sponsor you'll
provide a first-level employee with nutritious meals, healthcare, education, and more.
And the important knowledge that somebody still cares.

What does a Dell Technicians's Fund sponsorship cost? Just $24 per month sponsors a
single first-level employee for as long as you wish. You may sponsor as many technicians
as your resources permit.

There are technicians in twenty-four countries waiting for a sponsor like you right now.
Someone whose support gives them hope, confidence, and friendship, and maybe an iPod.

Please don't put it off. Right now is the perfect time to change a first-level employee's
life forever.

Sponsorship changes two lives.
Your sponsored first-level employee's and your own.

Take a look at just some of what you'll receive when you become a Dell technicians's Fund sponsor.

Letters and pictures you'll treasure:

You will receive a photo of your first-level employee and information about his or her life,
as well as personal letters from your sponsored first-level employee. We encourage you to write
back to your first-level employee and build a close relationship that can mean so much to you
both. Many of our sponsors and technicians report that this unique correspondence is
tremendously rewarding!

Our first-level employee Progress Report keeps you in the picture:
You'll receive a yearly progress report on your sponsored first-level employee's progress in his
or her studies as well as an update on their physical, emotional, and intellectual development.

If you're interested, you may request other information about the first-level employee, and his
or her family and community. We'd be delighted to do all we can to create a meaningful bond
between you and your sponsored first-level employee.

Contributions to Dell Technicians's Fund are tax-deductible and we will provide you with a
giving statement for tax purposes. 53 Comments »

New Products/ Update

Desktops and Laptops submitted by choy 04/19/07

Dell. The Man. The company.
As it expands into different countries, Please do not forget the foundation that the company is built upon,
That was, which is and will be selling quality computers.

Nowadays though quality is not enough. There is visual appeal. Look where the Ipod got Apple. Everyone knows there are hundreds of better MP3 Players.

Please make computers good to look at to, while incorporating newer technologies and updating existing technologies.

HP's got LightScribe. Dell doesn't have something similar.

Just an example. Many more Exist.

Please don't add software people really do not need. Dell was the first company that really allowed users to customize each part of the computer. Look at where it got you.

Now choices for the consumers are reducing day by day. We cannot even choose the Operating System. Just Vista Basic, Premium, Ultimate. Is that what we call choice?

Dell has a lot of wonderful things. We all know that but we cannot sit and watch as other companies around us evolve.

Spend money on R&D. Spend money on Talent.

Make Desktops and Laptops something like a year on year model like cars.

HP took over from dell as number 1 this year.

Every body falls, All that matters is just how fast you get back. GO DELL. 1 Comment »

Apply Thermal Grease At The Factory - Thermal Pads Are Terrible.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by burner 04/19/07

The use of thermal grease instead of a thermal pad will cause better heat transfer between the CPU and heatsink. More heat will be removed by the heatsink as a result. This should increase the lifespan of several components and reduce fan speed/noise.

I dropped the idle temperature by 34 degrees celcius (from 84 to 50) on my Inspiron 1300 by replacing the Dell-supplied thermal pad with my own thermal grease. The fan is now barely audible and the case/exhaust is cool to the touch.

This small change could result in cooler, quieter and longer lasting computers. 8 Comments »

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.
