Improve website style in China P.R.

Dell Web Site submitted by comp_286 Jun 29

The Dell website in China P.R. is still with "legacy" style.
The style might be improved as the style in the U.S.A for a better experience. Comment »

Work Back to the States

Service and Support submitted by meand3ts Jun 30

I have been very upset trying to get help with my Dell product. I could not understand the person and they could not understand what I was saying. So why don't you use Housewifes who don't work or Househusbands. A lot of people don't have jobs that know how to work on computers. So, instead of paying them a salary pay them on each job they do. You don't have a hourly salary, no benefits to pay, and they will have someone here in the US. Now if it is something they can't handle then they pass it on to someone that can. That person don't have to be staff but someone that knows computers. You can also offer classes to those that want more training. I am sure your complaints will go down. To make sure they have solved the problem you send a survey to the customer. 2 Comments »

click to start

Healthcare submitted by bswanson Jun 30

Dell should make a small device that would be housed in the lower part of the seat belt device. when clicking the seat belt together the device would act as a kill switch allowing the car to start when the key is turned. Without the two together the key turn alone will not start the engine. The safety belt has to be worn and in place before starting the car. The lower part of the belt would be hard wired to the computer under the rug sending a signal to the computer that the driver is safley secured in the seat. This device would only be for the driver side seat. This idea is synonymous to the keys with chips that was designed for security. This idea is designed for safety of all those on the road. It does not have to stop with cars, but can be implemented to construction vehicles, private planes, buses, semi's, etc.... it would not take much for dell to partner with automakers to make this product and save lives. 4 Comments »

Young International Proud Parents

Dell Community, Software submitted by candacemichelle_1 Jun 30

I heard on the Steve Harvey Morning Show that Dell is looking for new innovative ideas much like the logic behind such successes as Myspace and Facebook. I believe there needs to be a website specifically catered to a network of international young parents. Some of these young people need guidance in parenting. The ages of this free membership would range from 13 years old to 25 years old.

Whether its spiritual or practical advice, experts in parenting should be available to respond to emails or be present in chat rooms about certain topics.

There would be groups for the YIPPY's (Young International Proud Parents) to join, as well as ones they could formulate themselves. For example, Single Fathers, Single Mothers, Married Parents, High School Parents, Parents of Twins, Parents with One Child, Parents with Over 3 Children. Parents of Kids with Disabilities, Parents in school, Working Parents, Parents Disowned by Their Families, even Rape Victims forced into parenthood.

By having this outlet designed for this demographic, young people may find that they're not alone in their struggles. There will also be an opportunity for volunteers to log on and give advice under designated usernames so that members know that they are a credible source.

Plenty of advertisement opportunities are available as well, from Magazines, baby products, learning games, and clothing stores. Young celebrity parents such as Jamie Lynn Spears, Solange Knowles, could sponsor this site as well.

Please consider this idea seriously and contact me if this idea sounds as good to you as it does to me. There is currently a www.yppo.com but it is very basic and visually unappealing to the target audience.

The disclaimer here is that teenage and unwed pregnancies should not be encouraged in any way, but yet and still they are ever-present in today's society. Therefore, we should prepare this generation and equip them with the tools necessary to raise healthy, smart and well rounded children.

It would be www.yippy.com. That URL name is already in use but its so small that it could be bought out by Dell if necessary. 8 Comments »

Mandriva Linux Spring 2008.1 w/powerpack

Linux submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

I recently converted my Windows Vista Dell Inspiron 1501 to a Mandriva Linux Spring 2008.1 and it's simply awesome!I find it more stable than Ubuntu. Mandriva is KDE based with the optional GNOME environment too. But I find it better than Ubuntu in ways that some configuration is better, they have better layouts of configuring the system. Some ways Ubuntu is better, and some Mandriva is better too. Also Mandriva had a portable flash drive so you can take your Linux anywhere and use it on any pc that supports USB Boot Up'.Thats a major benefit in my mind, the ability to take your desktop anywhere, literally! Anyone who enjoys Ubuntu will enjoy Mandriva, wish to see Mandriva as an option for opensource on dell. And Mandriva power-pack offers DVD Playback! Hope to see some positive comments on this =o)

EXTERNAL POWER BUTTON FOR LAPTOPS, and better external display support

Laptops submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

Wish Dell would make powerbuttons elsewhere than opening the laptop cover and pressing the power button. This kinda makes it annoying for people like me whose laptop is connected to a 20 inch HD LCD monitor and doesnt care for the built-in laptop screen. This would make a laptop feel most like a laptop/desktop crossover, and if the dell boot-screen & bios automatically switched to external display once it was connected or the external display was powered up that would be a bonus! 6 Comments »

Show Dell PCs with Ubuntu Linux in stores & TV in China P.R.

Advertising and Marketing submitted by comp_286 Jun 29

It's happy to see that Dell has already opened stores in China P.R. to meet the favor of Chinese people. 1/2 of the products included in store are n-series, with Ubuntu Linux or Red Flag Linux. But it's weird that these products are all running Microsoft Windows XP! It's common in China P.R. to use illegal copies of Microsoft Windows XP, so it's necessary for Dell to tell customers what is open source and what could they achieve from it. If customers could experience Ubuntu Linux or other distributions, they will know how the performance is. To increase sales in China P.R., Show ads on TV is also very important. Add more options of Ubuntu is also necessary.

Sorry for my bad language skill. Comment »

checklist/packing list with every system

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by undead999 Jun 29

Include and easy to read packing list with every system that lists all included hardware and software. Place this in top tray of the pc box, Dell could add check boxes so buyers could check off everything as they unpack their system. Include infromation about checking hardware from the device manager. this will aid in assuring buyers get all hardware and software they paid for, if something is missing buyers can contact dell before the 14 day cutoff time to report somethng is missing,

I have ordered laptops with missing wireless cards in the past but never checked as my office didnt use wifi. After adding wifi we discovered many of our systems didnt have wifi cards that we paid for. 1 Comment »

"Dell Dock" makes Studio Laptops look like a Mac!

Software, Laptops submitted by james-94 Jun 26

I don't know about anyone else but i think that the new "Dell Dock" that comes with the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops would make it look like a mac. The "Dell Dock" should be an option if you want it installed. Also if you don't want your desktop cluttered with icons move them to the quick launch or something not to a dock. 5 Comments »

Train your tech support team about what featurs your BIOS's support.

Service and Support submitted by jmxz Jun 26

Quoting a comment in under a different idea:

I just purchased an XPS M1530... The laptop came wih bios A07 installed. I installed [tried Oracle VM, but the BIOS didn't support the CPU's virtualization feature]. I upgraded to A08. ... I just want t encourage Dell to provide virtualization and mark it's availability clearly. Neither Dell support or the Best Buy Geek Squad could tell me anything about what the bios supported.

C'mon. Tech Support should be able to answer such questions. If a Dell customer who bought one of your XPS's can't answer questions like that, where do you expect them to turn? (my guess: Apple) 1 Comment »

Increase R&D - create your own competitive advantage technology

Dell submitted by pablohs Jun 25

The rule in the PC world has always been “evolution not revolution”. Dell, like many other PC manufacturers, just does “Product Development” – They take parts and pieces from many suppliers, put them together and have designers make it look nice and we get a new PC or Laptop. This is often done by simply incorporating features from other platforms. The changes are incremental and produce incremental performance boosts.

Dell needs to increase their Research and Development in new technologies that will give them clear competitive advantages against competitor’s products. I know this is just a big statement (not an idea) but I would like to list some of the technologies I believe Dell should be working on. I am sure that my fellow IdeaStorm Bloggers will add a great list of “technologies” that may produce a “revolution” increment instead of baby steps.

Processors
Cell Processors – the PS3 use a Cell Processors – when the specific cell processor in the PS3 is good for the console, DELL should be working with its partners (Intel/AMD) in a new x86 based Cell processor and a Linux based OS that squeeze all the power out of this architecture. (IBM is working on something like this but using their PowerPC)

Memory
Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM) – use magnetic fields (IBM is working on this)
Nano-RAM or NRAM – use the mechanical position of carbon nanotubes
Memristors – HP is working on a memory that will use resistance

Hard Drives
Giant Magneto resistance and Perpendicular HD – GMR or CPP-GMR (Hitachi is working on these HD) this technology promise 10 times more density on HDs.
Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HMAR) – Fujitsu and Seagate are working on this technology. 1 Comment »

Add more staff to the Linux development team.

Linux, Service and Support submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 25

The Linux guys at Dell do a great job. But there just aren't enough of them to meet our impatient demands. Please take on a few extra bodies with Linux programing credentials to speed things up! 2 Comments »

Matte (non-glossy) screen option on Studio laptops

Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 26

Please add the OPTION of a matte screen to the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops -- preferably to all of the available resolution and backlight versions. Glossy displays are a deal-breaker for me. 4 Comments »

Dell Web Site submitted by blomster Jun 26

Below is the list of choices (with a proposed addition) in the "Narrow Your Selection" feature of Dell's US website for laptop / notebook computers. It's getting increasingly hard to find notebooks without glossy screens on Dell's website. Please add a choice for glossy/matte finish, as shown below.

Put Ubuntu on sale at the same time as Windows (unfair to Ubuntu sales count if we install it afterwords)

Advertising and Marketing submitted by brett_alton Jun 26

I'm pretty frustrated to receive a flyer with a Inspiron 1525 laptop on sale for $599 while the Ubuntu laptop with the same specs are $699.

Why is this frustrating you ask? Why don't you just buy the $599 laptop, wipe it and put Ubuntu on it you say?

Well, I can easily purchase the $599 laptop, wipe Windows off and put Ubuntu on but there are two problems with that:

1) I don't get Dell's support for Ubuntu Linux
2) Dell doesn't see what I do with my PC after I purchase it, thus, they don't know that they actually sold an Ubuntu laptop. This means that it is one more Windows laptop sold over a Ubuntu laptop. Why is this important?

Well, apparently a few weeks after supporting Ubuntu, Dell sold 40,000 Ubuntu-based laptops. It is finally my turn to purchase one, but I want to be added to that count so that Dell knows I'm buying an Ubuntu-based laptop. Why is this important?

I want Dell to continue selling Ubuntu-based laptops, so I think it would be in the Linux communities and Dell's best interest to offer the same deals on Ubuntu laptops as Windows laptops.

I don't want Windows Vista and I don't want you to think I want Windows Vista. I want Ubuntu, but I want to pay the same price as the other guys. 7 Comments »

Server Cable Management Arms

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage submitted by retro77 Jun 24

The cable arms on the servers are very loose, they hang down instead of flat. Also they build up a lot heat, impeding airflow out the back of the rack.

If you can make these slimmer and tighten them up, that would be great. I rarely open a server up while it is powered on, so I am thinking about taking these out completely.

Thank you. 1 Comment »

Improve your new 17" monitor.

Monitors and Displays submitted by winoffice Jun 24

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&...

Today I heard of a new 17" by Dell (the S1709W), and I decided to take a look at it. I had expected and hoped for something new or some sort of upgrade or improvement from the SE178WFP/E178WFP monitors. Instead, I was very disappointed when I seen exactly the same specifications! The same resolution, the same connectors, and everything else remains the same too.

I think that the new S1709W could be improved in the following ways:

1. Offer a 1920x1200 resolution option. You offer 1920x1200 on 17" notebooks, do the same here. I sit as close to desktop monitors as I do to notebooks, so do not try to say that I sit closer to notebooks than to desktop monitors.

2. In addition to the VGA port, include a DVI port. 1 Comment »
