No monitor

Monitors and Displays submitted by kushboy 02/19/07

One of the only reasons I won't even consider purchasing a computer from Dell is that I was told I could not purchase a system without also purchasing a monitor as well. I don't need a monitor, so don't make me buy one, and I won't. 17 Comments »

optimize ports placement in notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by macias 02/25/07

Place ports in such way that the user cannot interfere with the cables.

Take Dell Latitude D610 for example -- on the left side IN THE MIDDLE there is audio-out and mic-in. Who decided to place them there? If you are using microphone you cannot put the mouse on the left of the computer -- is this not obvious? I hope Dell noticed that there are left handed people.

So place such sockets in front (but I personally do not like it) or preferably in "top" of the left/right edge -- just like two USB ports on the right side.

The very same applies to non-existing (yet, a pity) sunken ports (I saw somebody reported this already so I go no further in details). Comment »

High Performance Computing Clusters Solutions

Education, Servers and Storage, Small Business submitted by ssttech 02/25/07

Up till now HP is the only company providing an "express ready-for-deployment" HPC solutions. Small businesses and educational colleges need only to choose processor type, amount of nodes, interconnectivity, operating system and software. Within weeks you will receive a fully functional "ready- to-go" upgradeable(you can add more nodes as need arises) cluster platform in the form:
-HP Cluster Platform 3000
-HP Cluster Platform 4000
-HP Cluster Platform 4000BL and
-HP Cluster Platform 6000

Dell should look in to time effective and productive HPC module solutions like these.

standardized power cords that work with all laptop models

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by alcassi 02/25/07

It's frustrating that a power cord purchased for one Dell laptop won't work with a different Dell laptop. In the tangle of wires in our home office, it's easy to grab the wrong cord in the last minute rush to pack up for a business trip.

Also, in an emergency (one hour notice) I needed to buy a power cord for my Dell laptop for a four-hour presentation. It was a small town that only had a Radio Shack. They said the cord had tips to recharge every brand of computer except Dells, because Dell had made them take that tip out of the kit. The power cord would run my Dell laptop, but not recharge it.

Come on, one power cord for every Dell, please - standardized. 1 Comment »

Snap on Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by dvorchak 02/25/07

Have you ever tried to replace the keyboard on a laptop? It can be a real pain. You have to take out x number of screws and getting a new keyboard plugged back in can diffiuclt. Yes... you can do it but it is cumbersome. Having worked with an IT staff keyboards and hard drives seem to be the two biggest failures. I'd like to see a much simpler approach, A snap in design of some sort. One that doesn't require screws or manually reapplying the connection. You could then offer keyboards of different styles. Maybe different colors or differnt key stroke preferences, IE firm Keys, Soft keys etc.. because some keyboards are loved by some, but hated by others. 1 Comment »

Revamp Dell product as a package

Desktops and Laptops submitted by aditrus 02/25/07

I've been a Dell customer for 9 years. I Influence management for Dell PCs and friends for home use. Products has a good story to tell. Micheal Dell's innovation and leadership. Great products, flexibility, design and support. These recent years its hard to influence management and friends because of rapid technological advancement. Basic needs for the hardware flexibility and style are no longer in Dell's hardware. I myself, friends and management give alternative suggestions to purchase HP, Apple and Alienware products because the product package delivers its story by its image and configuration. I suggest current products and the company should show some change and great product options. Here are some suggestions:

1. The Micheal Dell story. Right now its been over shadowed by HP's Mark Hurd.
2. What is really the advantage of getting a dell? Before it was direct and affordable. The product is worth the price. Sell products again that has real value.
3. Intel and AMD virtualization chipset support even in notebooks. I guess many notebook users also would install multiple OSs not just dualboot.
4. A fast OpenGL video hardware even with entry level notebooks as an option.
5. A minimum of 1G RAM to support the virtualization processor.
6. Hybrid Hard Disks
7. Internal memory card readers
8. IR, Bluetooth, mic and webcam as a standard I/O in entry level notebooks
9. Backlit keyboards
10. Illuminate dell emblem
11. Make thinner LCD screen border cover in notebooks
12. Make stronger hinges in notebooks
13. Better rubber stoppers under the notebooks
14. Driver support for Linux distros, from basic components to the extra function keys in the notebooks.

Thanks M. Dell for listening to us. Comment »

Internet Laptop Design Contest

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by mucho 02/16/07

In order to get direct input from Dell customers, and tie more closely with consumer trends, why not sponsor a contest over the internet to design a line of laptops for home/consumer use? This would tie into Dell's philosophy of direct relationships. So the new laptop would not only be built specifically for you, but also DESIGNED directly by Dell customers. Of course, designs would have to be reviewed by Dell engineers to be sure that they are technically feasible and can be built within cost constraints, etc... Seems like this could be a very cool way to design a new generation of home/consumer laptops thru collaboration directly with Dell customers. 9 Comments »

coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Linux certification for hardware

Linux submitted by godji 02/20/07

It would be great if, when customizing a computer (laptop or desktop doesn't matter), there would be some indication about what hardware will work with Linux. On systems where all hardware is supported, there could be an option to have no operating system preinstalled, or have Linux preinstalled. Also, such systems should have some sot of sticker, similar to the ubiquitous "Designed for Windows Whatever". The sticker could say "Designed for Linux" or "Works with Linux" or "Linux Ready", etc.

The motivation is that a customer should be able to buy a computer to use Linux on, without worrying about hardware that will not work with a free operating system. Unfortunately such devices still exists; Dell should be alerting customers to their presence. 1 Comment »

Pre-Installed Gimp Photo Manipulation Software

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kyle.burton 02/20/07

Include a pre-installed copy of the open source Image Manipulation software: Gimp with windows based installs. In addition to open-office, a photo manipulation package like this would be a useful add on. Including picasa or other on-line image organization applications would be useful as well. 3 Comments »

Get ACPI working

Desktops and Laptops submitted by drizzt321 02/19/07

I have found in my e1505 which has an ExpressCard slot, that the BIOS does not have the proper ACPI support for PCI-Express hot swap. Currently to the best of my knowledge none of the ExpressCard systems have a properly working BIOS that correctly supports the PCI-E SIG specifications for ACPI hot swap.

There are other well known ACPI bugs, and functions that are not implemented. Dell, please improve your ACPI coding in the BIOS. Or just go LinuxBIOS and not worry about any of that at all. 2 Comments »

Sunken USB Port for Laptops- Best for ReadyBoost

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by iota 02/17/07

Given the high usage of portable USB flash memory (especially related to the Vista ReadyBoost), and all of the existing and emerging wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, wirelessUSB (UWB), EVDO, UTMS, WiMax, ZigBee), it would be nice to have a USB port that is "sunken" into edge of the laptop. Instead of having these USB dongles hanging 2-3" out of the side the laptop, a sunken USB port would reduce the exposed portion to about 1". Dell could brand this port and specify exact dimensions for USB accessory venndors (eg. SanDisk, Belkin, etc.). 6 Comments »

Transreflective LCDs for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by theimpostor 02/19/07

Dell should consider introducing trans-reflective LCDs to its laptops. These screens allow the use of LCD screens in conditions with bright ambient light conditions such as outdoors in direct sunlight. In these conditions the backlight is not required further reducing battery consumption. Such screens are available but only a few specialist laptop manufacturers use them. If Dell were to adopt such technology they would become more economical to produce and cause a significant step forward in laptop display development.

The Dell Axim X51v PDA in fact has a transreflective display. It would be great to see this technology in laptops made by Dell.

This site gives some more information about transreflective displays http://www.irontech.com/industrial_LCD_displays_for_sunlight.html.

Sometimes glossy, high-contrast screens such as the Dell TrueLife screens are referred to as transreflective but they are not. 2 Comments »

Laptop & Desktop Boot in seconds from Flash Drives

Broadband and Mobility, Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg 02/19/07

Have laptops and PCs that boot quickly & quietly from fast internal flash drives,
and run the whole OS and application programs in RAM.
The New Dell PC will boot from internal Fast USB 2.0 flash drives in just a few seconds.
The Hard drive can stay powered down, completely off, unless the user needs to store some extra large files (video, photos).

Laptop Battery life is measured in days, not hours.

Have 2 Recessed USB 2.0 Slots.
Two USB Flash Drives would fit neatly into the laptop.
In this way the whole OS and Apps run in RAM, and stores data files on an 8 GB flash drive.

The 8GB is used transparently as the 'On Line' Storage, with a hard drive acting as secondary storage.
This gives desktops and laptops much greater speed and power savings.

<font> On-Line/Near-Line Storage Model for Laptops</font>
1. OS and App all run from RAM (so the machine should have 2GB+ of RAM)
2. Modified files are worked on in RAM, and stored on the Flash Drive
3. Older (non-system) files, that are 'inactive', get pushed down to the hard drive,

Hard Drive files are stored with on-the-fly hardware compression / decompression (back to RAM), with the flash drive file replaced with a pointer to the hard drive file.
Data is always safely copied down to the hard drive on shut down.

The flash drive is removeable and upgradeable, so later if someone wants to upgrade to a 32GB flash drive, just unplug and plug in the new one.

On-line / Near-Line storage works great on very large data servers, where data is mostly write once, read infrequently.
(Also known as Write Once, Read Mostly - WORM drives.)

It's time such ideas are put into practice for desktops and laptops.

You can run your Dell Laptop TODAY from 100% Flash Drive - Pen Drive using Puppy Linux.

www.puppylinux.org delivers a complete, small, fast Linux Distribution including all major tools in under 90MB. You can add Open Office, GIMP, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc and they all fit right in a USB Flash Drive.
Pupply Linux Applications.
Download Puppy Linux so you Can Try Flash Drive Dell Notebooks Today. 21 Comments »

Linux Preinstalado en DELL España

submitted by irio 02/20/07

8 Comments »

AVG Free Edition (Virus and Spyware Utilities) Installation Option

Software submitted by solidsource 02/19/07

Allow for AVG (or other virus software/spy ware manufacture alternative) instead of, or alongside, the other options (Norton,etc...). AVG is a comprehensive suite of virus and spy ware protection applications that remains very un-intrusive compared to the other options Dell provides. Simply allowing for an alternative(s) to the big 2 would be great. 8 Comments »

Would be Nice to Get the New Hybrid Hard Drives As Soon As Possible

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by guest_houston 02/17/07

Sometime this year some hard disk makers are to release "hybrid hard drive" technology, which is supported by the new Windows Vista.

This technology could possibly provide greater speed and energy savings, as well as making the computer quieter.

I can't wait for this to become available. 4 Comments »
